How can you NOT think of wicked when you think of stunts last year? The Dancing Through Life making of vid mentioned how they had to hire parkour professionals and stunt performers to safely do a lot of the stunts in that scene. Not to mention Cynthia Erivo was harnessed up and zip/zooming around while singing. Emilia is this year's barbie - nominated predominantly for overall politics and meaning over individual film quality. (Still dont understand how america ferreira was a nomination worthy performance last year)
Individual film quality is very subjective, many people did think Barbie was a really good movie, in fact. And tbh having a good message adds to the quality of a movie, normally.
I still don't get why we need to nominate Cynthia Erivo for Wicked (it was such a meh movie), Karla Sofia Gascon (her character didn't do enough to warrant a nomination) and Demi Moore (I absolutely love The Substance, but she doesn't have enough screentime)
I feel like Best Picture is between Conclave and Anora. The Brutalist is just too damn long and most voters will either not watch it. Or not vote for it out of spite. Look what happened to The Irishman & Killers of the flower moon. Plus Oppenheimer was just last year. I can't see two 3 hour plus movies winning back to back. The Brutalist is a one time watch. Anora & Conclave are more accessible and I'd happy watch them again.
Awful news coming out of LA. here in Canada wildfires are a sadly a very regular occurrence too. I imagine the Oscars will still go ahead in March, but it likely be a very sombre mood in the theatre, with many of those directly affected or close to those that are. I saw the oscar nominations have also been delayed by a few days and I guess the Ram playoff game will be moved to another city.
Spotlight (2015) wasn't looking too great before the oscars. I think; I don't have Dan's grasp of the landscape. Spotlight had three Golden Globe nominations, zero wins. Two SAG nominations with a win for its cast. The shape of the competition might be important context though. At the Independent Spirit awards it won all five awards it was nominated, including director and picture. Is that one with predictive value for the academy? I really liked Spotlight, but also in a curious way, it felt very fitting the only major oscars it won were picture and original screenplay. If Wicked doesn't take the top prize maybe we're heading for a Spotlight scenario
Spotlight was in a similar landscape in 2016, with several movies on equal footing. It lost the DGA and Golden Globe to The Revenant. It won the SAG Award for Best Ensemble, but lost the PGA Award to The Big Short. So the guild awards were spread out. We'll see if that happens again this year. It wasn't really up against any of the other major contenders at the Spirit Awards.
"Dune: Part 2" being overlooked yet again is really criminal. The SAG Best Actress category is stacked.

Just want to be the only one that loved Heretic!
At this point if the academy doesn’t recognize dune part 2 then i fully believe when messiah comes out and it lives up to the Dune parts one and two then they will do what they did with return of the king and give it everything
I thought Barbie was a really good movie
A Complete Unknown will win SAG ensemble.
I still don't get why we need to nominate Cynthia Erivo for Wicked (it was such a meh movie), Karla Sofia Gascon (her character didn't do enough to warrant a nomination) and Demi Moore (I absolutely love The Substance, but she doesn't have enough screentime)
CONCLAVE: Best actor. Best screenplay. Best picture. 3 Oscars total. Mark my words Dan.
BEST PICTURE ANORA 🙌🙌
I don’t disagree that conclave could win best picture. It looks like a movie that will do really well with the preferential ballot system
Glad to see Yura in supporting actor, thought he balanced comedy and care so well in Anora.
No one remembers Dune 2 😢
