    i'm from holland and i think that the most people that i know would say about america is that they think that they are beter than the rest of the world. but that isn't. and thats sometimes the problem.

      +Iese00 It's interesting how true that statement is yet many people in the US use European countries as a comparison of how the US should handle issues like healthcare, gun control, education, environmentalism, taxation, etc.

      +Alkalinium I've spoken to some people and it seems the assumption stems from how optimistic and individualistic we are. If we say, "American is awesome", in our mind it's an optimistic and individual statement. It has no bearing on our opinion of other countries. It's a statement that stands alone.
      To cultures that are less individualistic, it's interpreted as "American is awesome and is therefore better than you". It comes from viewing statements from a community standpoint rather than an individualistic one. I'm not sure that's the case in lese00's area, but that's what I gleaned from people I've spoken to from other countries.

Its just the way nature works, it doesn't have to appeal to the human reasoning. But yeah, people have this wrong notion that the US is doing very well at both of those which is wrong. Countries like the Netherlands and Sweden are doing better. But hey, the US is certainly better than half if not a little more than the rest of the world.

    America: it's a continent. I'm Indonesian who moved to US a few years ago. My impression of this country: Food, Quantity over Quality. High Fructose Corn Syrup. I have difficulty eating something sweet here because they're just toooo sweet. I am considered fat in Indonesia/60kg, I'm perfectly normal here. Their measurements are different compare to the rest of the world; miles, inches, pounds, feet, fahrenheit. People love spending time inside than outside on holidays. Commercials on TV are re-tards, sometimes don't make sense. Their groceries list are microwave stuffs and instant foods. Few bought fresh ingredients. The positive side: you can just wear whatever, nobody will say you look bad even if you look bad. There isn't many black outs like in Indonesia, electricity is always on/except may be there's natural disaster. On general, americans are very open and nice. *and also Indonesia is a fast changing country while US is a slow changing country. Sometimes I feel like living back in the 90s here.

    My pet peeve with "They aren't well traveled" as an insult is that that woman, and others who say this, seem to forget how big the US is. We don't live in Europe where one country is less than a days travel from another. All methods of travel besides using ones own feet is expensive. Planes especially. There are many Americans who want to see the world. They don't have the means. A lot of people travel from state to state, but some can't afford to do even that.
    Besides that it's simply amusing (and predictable) to see other countries criticize the United States for things they won't own up to themselves (Not particularly the people in the video). They call us ignorant based on perpetuated stereotypes and little insight, and believe they know something without actually being there. It's hypocritical. Of course, there are people like that in America too, but at least some of us have the ability to recognize it.

    • @Mooyaho90
      @Mooyaho90 9 лет назад +46

      +Flora Tully very true, the closest countries near us are Canada and Mexico. Many people i think forget that America is basically by itself and surrounded by ocean on both sides. It is also easier for European people to be more "cultured" because their societies/cultures have been around for much longer than the U.S.

    • @sarahb4401
      @sarahb4401 9 лет назад +30

      That woman was australian so not only is it the same size as the USA but much further away from everything too... Australians make it a priority to travel and learn about cultures. We also have a far better working environment than usa (minimum wage is about $18 per hour, we get 4 weeks vacation leave), we have free healthcare, etc, etc. a free market economy like USA has means many people will never have the freedoms that Europe and Australia have bc it aims to make dome rich and keep the poor poor.
      Not saying out country is perfect but as someone who have travelled a lot, USA is the last place I'd choose to live...

    • @TM56
      @TM56 9 лет назад +17

      +Sarah B LOL, where do I begin:
      1. Your healthcare is not "free." Please stop saying that. Nothing is free. You pay through much higher taxes in Australia than the USA (MUCH HIGHER) that so many Americans do not like and having the gov control their health care needs, while health care in the USA is subsidized to a certain degree and people and businesses pay out of pocket for private care.
      2. LOL, most Americans make more than minimum wage with $21.50 an hour in the USA being the average. And your Australian dollar is worthless compared to the US dollar so there is a reason your minimum wage is higher.
      3. Australians cultured? I have been around Australians back in my day and the last thing I could call your breed is "cultured" especially after a few drinks. You guys don't have a great reputation as you think.
      4. Who asked you if you wanted to moved to the USA? LOL, like your special enough that 330 million people in America care whether you think USA is place to live. I got news for you - hardly any Americans think about Australia or think it of it as a place to settle or want to live either.
      I think I covered it all.

    • @geometricfro8768
      @geometricfro8768 9 лет назад +18

      +Flora Tully Your comment is proof positive you're not well travelled and a little bit ignorant. There is a world out there that isn't the US or Europe. Including that woman who was in AUSTRALIA! From the US you can get to Europe in less than half the time (And for half the price usually)!

    • @crisziz
      @crisziz 9 лет назад +6

      +Geometric Fro For one, I never said Europe specifically. And I reckon you need to remind some Europeans that Asia, Africa, and South America exists.Two, when I say "affordable", I do not mean simply monetarily and again, I was not talking about traveling solely to Europe.
      I'm not arguing with you because there is nothing to argue about. Have a nice day.

    That Chinese Girl was spot on. I hear the same thing pretty much anytime I talk to a local in China.
    Also a fun fact. If you do happen to be white, a seeming majority of people in Western China (don't know about the east) will assume you have blue eyes and blond hair. Basically they think all white people are blond and blue eyed, so they don't even think to notice your real hair or eye color. It's kind of like how many westerners don't even try to notice a difference between Asian ethnicities.

      M8 everybody knows they ain't be talking about Mexico or Canada. In fact, before the revolution we aren't even allowed to call it the USA on tests because it didn't exist yet, so we are used to say America and USA. If we were talking about Canada, we'd say Canada, if we were talking about southern America or a country in that continent, we'd say that countries name.
      We all know damn well that America isn't only the U.S.
      Don't whine about this like everyone is neglecting all the other countries. We aren't, it is just easier to say America than saying the United States of America.

We fought a Great War to end the tyranny of the most powerful country in the world (at the time). We inspired great minds, build a whole new type of government "for the people", we are a beacon of hope for those who don't have the same liberties as we were so bless to have. I'm from New Zealand and I think that America focuses a lot on history (which is important don't get me wrong; so that way history doesn't repeat itself) but doesn't really focus on the current events that's happening in OTHER countries. They also don't seem to focus too much on their education system considering their rankings globally and how for a country that big, it's pretty low. As for the people, you can't judge everyone as 1 person. Everyone is different. Sure there are some assholes who do some nasty stuff but if that was representing all of America, then it would be pretty chaotic. I know that this is a long comment but overall I think that America is filled with some talented people as well as some dumb people who do stupid things, their education system is not the best, and they focus (most of them at least) too much about themselves when really they could be more aware of other countries.

    • @Munkie
      @Munkie 7 лет назад +2

      One thing that I absolutely hate about America or for those who get butt hurt and consider America as North America is the feminism. You have these women who complain about getting verbally abused by men when most of the time, they're just overreacting whereas in countries such as Cambodia, you have these girls/women getting sexually assaulted by (not only just ordinary men) but also men that are part of the military. Girls that are 13 getting pregnant it's just... horrible. Think about what's happening in other countries before you full on rants about someone calling you dumb names such as fatty or stupid.

      @@Munkie I totally agree! I'm American and I believe a lot of Third Wave feminism is based on a bunch of crap. It feels as though it seeks to destroy women more than uplift them. Third Wave feminism, to me, seems to completely ignore legit issues involving women, such as human trafficking/sexual slavery, which is unfortunately rampant in our country and all around the world but it hides in the shadows. Praise God for people who work to save victims of sex trafficking and who work to catch the criminal involved.

      wow, that is quite an accurate observation. I am American. I've only lived in the same town on the East Coast my whole life thus far, but I feel like your comment sums things up well. Sometimes, I feel our school systems do not focus enough on specific time periods of history and how they apply to/affect our life today, I agree, we do not seem to discuss current events a lot at all, and at least where I live, we were only taught world geography primarily in 6th and 7th grade. We are supposed to learn United States Geography in 4th and 5th grade, but I was taught practically zero geography at my school. :( It was not prioritized.

      Collages are ridiculously expensive!!! How a normal citizen can afford that ? Collages are only (or most) for the privilege people. How someone from a hood like Compton can go to college? If he is a Sport wonder kid he has good chances to get a scholarship. But on a normal way ? No chance. No matter how smart he is. And what’s then a good alternative to get money? Become a drug dealer.

    Buuuuut i'm American and have traveled all over. Hell, I studied abroad in New Zealand when I was only 16 all by myself. The most interesting part of the experience was the mind-set of the people there, which encouraged me to travel more and to learn about the world around me. I agree to some extent, I have friends who have never left their state, and have no clue about the world around them. but don't slap that arrogant judgement on all of us. So too answer her question, it is just a stereotype and it's not true for all Americans, you saying that, it came off as if you don't exactly understand the world around you either.

    Totally not a criticism, as such, just an observation. No anger/annoyance from me on this.
    I think it's funny when Europeans, or Australia or New Zealand, say that America doesn't know anything about the outside world, especially Geography, but if you hand them an unmarked map of the US and ask them to label the states, they usually can't do it any better than Americans can label European countries.

    • @kbear6863
      @kbear6863 9 лет назад

      Many of us would have a general idea where some places are on the map e.g New York is on the east near the top, Florida is at the east near the bottom, California is on the west coast, Texas/Louisiana/Mississippi is in the south. I could name a bunch more states but not really know where they are, I've never been to America so I'd say my knowledge isn't that bad. From England btw.

    • @ChristinaTelles
      @ChristinaTelles 9 лет назад +2

      Which is my point. I've never been to Europe, but I know where a bunch of the countries are. I'm a bit iffy on Eastern Europe, but I could do most of Western Europe pretty easily.

    • @kbear6863
      @kbear6863 9 лет назад

      +Christina Telles yeah Eastern Europe is very tricky, wouldn't expect people to know the countries on the map, I'd struggle! But I think that's besides the point. I think the point is just having more general knowledge about different places (and I'm not saying you don't personally) not necessarily where they are situated on the map. I've seen comments from Americans complaining about Australians doing 'Spring make-up looks' here on RUclips because the northern hemisphere is going into Autumn/Fall, they seriously didn't realise not everywhere is in the same season :| very worrying!

    • @ChristinaTelles
      @ChristinaTelles 9 лет назад +1

      Oh, I don't deny that there are stupid Americans, and ones that didn't know that the Northern and Southern Hemispheres have seasons at different times were probably kids, but I've heard people from all over the world say really stupid things before. It's just funny that if someone from somewhere else says something stupid, then just that person is dumb, but if an American says something stupid it's becaue most Americans are dumb. I just find that amusing.
