Update to my response 11 months ago: I use this lens for about 95+% of my shooting, on one of my two R7's. I've never taken so many nice bird shots, with any other gear. I know this might sound crazy, but if I were to hit the lottery today, I honestly don't know what money could buy, that would be better for my purposes ? Its super light, very long, and very sharp. I think that pretty much covers it. Oh, and in low light, it's just fine, at a slow enough shutter speeds and I "always" shoot with a tripod, to make that possible. Of course I dream of a lens which was just a 'little bit' faster, a little better build quality, with a rotating collar, and some weather sealing..... but I know of no such lens :( So for the time being, and maybe from here on out, this will be my main birding lens.
Thanks for giving me an update, I need to use the lens again, I have sent off m R7 to be checked so perhaps when I get it back I will try this combo again. Cheers, Duade
Thanks John, I was there for maybe 3 hours, they dammed and flooded this area which killed the trees. They then undammed the lake as evaporation was too high and this revealed all the dead trees. Cheers, Duade
Loving your R7 videos, RUclips recommended your channel to me because I've been looking at this camera so much. This is definitely reinforcing how much I want to buy this camera. I really enjoy how you show your whole process, and the way you transition from the RAW image to your edited version is great! It's something that I haven't seen a lot of other creators do.
F11 does bring its challenges and yes ISO800 - 1600 is common with this lens. If you shoot in the forest I don't think this is the lens for you on the R7. Cheers, Duade
an unrelated question, I've been wanting to visit my relatives in Melbourne, Australia during the holidays. Just wondering if you can make a video about some great spots in Australia for bird photography.
G'day, sounds like fun, the Western Treatment Plant is a good spot just outside of Melbourne. Phillip Island just south of the city is also worth a visit for the Geese. Ebird is probably the best resource. CHeers, Duade
Great video Duade as usual. Loved the robin photos especially, they are fabulous birds. For me I think the 800 would be too long with the R7. Will you have a chance to try that combination in a forest situation?
Thanks Lachlan, yes, the 800mm is a bit much at times and it is difficult to locate the subject quickly in the viewfinder. It really is a use case lens and you would need a zoom lens to accompany it. I will try some forest shots in the future. Cheers, Duade
The R5 has a crop mode, with you can get 1.6x magnification factor, I would like to know if I loose image quality if instead of this crop mode I just use the full frame mode and crop the image after in post looking for the equivalent 1.6x magnification image.
Hi Duade. thanks for the video. That loud shutter noise suggests quite an impact! I take it that you’ve not experienced any camera shake caused by that?
Thanks Mal, yes, I suspect shutter shock is an issue as I did get lots of soft shots, I am debating whether electronic is better now and just put up with the wobble. Cheers, Duade
This is great, you clearly had a blast. This is one use case where the R7 really shines, i.e. small birds and other animals at a distance in good light. I’ve also used this combo with the 1.4 extender from a bird hide. The handling and AF were great and the results really good. Ok there are limitations but it opens the door to scenarios that would otherwise be difficult (or expensive and heavy) to capture.
R7 and RF 800mm f/11 my exact setup. I was also excited with using that combination. I travel with my Sigma 100-400 also for those closeup shots. But I'm thinking about getting the RF 100-400 and selling the Sigma due to the focus hunting issue. Its starting to annoy me. Im going have to try that home made perch trick one day. Great pics.
Great video Duade, still waiting for my R7, ordered it in early June , unfortunately may not receive mine til September as major supply chain issues to UK, my 7dmk2 was damaged recently so having to use my 6D and 60D which are getting old, I love your channel and your heart problems and getting into bird photography is a similar story to mine, in 2014 I was hit by a covid like virus that nearly took me out and basically gave me chronic heart failure and Afib (irregular heart) its taken me nearly 8 years to get back to how I used to feel and have the mental scars and fears, Although I was into photography in the eighties and nineties I really never got into digital photography properly until a few months after my heart failure , bought a canon 650d and 55-250STM and became obsessed with the detail of our feathery friends, it helped me heal and the walking did me good too, I now have a 500 F4L and 70-200 F2,8L and really need my R7 to arrive soon lol, keep up the great work and inspiring ! :)
@@colintraveller park cameras, I was 87th on their list , I have dropped to 68th , they have had two deliveries from canon but obviously only receiving 10 or 20 a month, it could even be October/ nov by time I receive it tbh, some people will have to wait til next year at this rate
Great video. The eye-tracking auto-focus does appear to struggle with some larger mammals, I have noticed my R6 struggles a bit sometimes with moose, especially.
Super long telephoto is great if you have the right light and no heat distortion. It's great to be able to apply just the minimum crop, especially on the lower-resolution cameras. I've taken to using my 800mm with a 1.4 teleconverter and finding that I'm getting good results (in bright light, of course).
do you have any plans to test out an R3 for wildlife, i'm thinking the BSI sensor will be useful in low light, something that should have been in the R7
@@Duade after i posted that i saw a review on it and i really liked the fact you can use eye detect with single point auto focus, now that feature alone is worth it
Thanks for video. It was very informative. The pictures are great. A question please: a lot of Canon users have EF 100-400mm II and EF teleconverters. Would you recommend the R7 + 100-400mm II + 2.x combo to get to the same field of view?
If you already own those lenses it could be an option for sure, I think the 1.4x extender makes more sense to be honest on the R7 as 800mm is a lot and using a 2x does impact IQ and AF. The 800 f11 is sharper then those combos. Cheers, Duade
It was fine on my R5 but challenging for BIF shots due to the high iso to keep the shutter speed up and the reduced AF area. It's very sharp for the money and got me some nice shots. I don't think I'd use this lens with an R7 though. It would be a bit of a disaster iso wise I think.
Hi, Duade! That was really great as usual! I was wondering if I change my r6 for the r7 because of the 1.6 crop and the extra magapixels. The low light capability of the R6 is great, and I have some nice shots of jaguars with 25,600 ISO. But I have a 100-500mm and most of the times it's short for birds and I almost can't crop. Do you think the r6 with a 1.4 tele-converter is better or would you take the R7 instead? 2
mate, I would pick up the converter first, the R7 would struggle in low light and the AF is not as sticky and reliable. With the R6 if you can get close the IQ and details are much better. Oh just be are you lose the 100-300mm range on the 100-500 with the extender and it is annoying. Good luck, Cheers, Duade
How would the cropping work on the R7's 32mp compared to the R5's 45mp on the same lens? Would you get about the same size image? Thanks. BTW, really like your videos.
It all depends how close you are to the subject, if the subject is far off the R5 when cropped to the R7 FOV is 17mp vs the 32 of the R7, so the R7 actually has the advantage. Cheers, Duade
You are a great photographer! I’m a beginner “birder”. I’ve asked to be notified when the R7 is available in the USA. I like the lens you’ve tried. I make my selection of lenses, easier. Should you consider leading my wife ( a REAL birder!) and me in a photo-safari in your Victoria. It would make quite a holiday…!! ‘Ve
Thanks Roger, good luck getting the camera when it arrives, yes Australia is a great place to visit, but it is rather large making it difficult to see all the birds. I have not looked into the tour side of things as yet, Cheers, Duade
Pet Peeve: Don't know who needs to hear this but... a crop is *not reach.* It is *not* focal length. It's field-of-view. It's a crop. The best thing about the crop sensor is that it puts all your pixels into a smaller field of view - but for the love of all that's holy *STOP* comparing crop factor to focal length. You do not have 1,280mm of "reach" using this combination. You have 800mm of reach because that's the lens you're using. Period.
Thanks for your comment and I understand your frustration, I agree that the focal length does not change and only the field of view changes. My brain lets me down at times when I say focal length instead of field of view and I apologise for that and try to put text on the video to say FOV. The reason I think reach is so commonly used to express the size of the bird in the viewfinder is It is a lot harder for someone to say wow I have such a narrower field of view compared to someone saying I have more reach. One is instantly understandable where as the other requires someone to understand what field of view is. I really don't think people will stop using the term reach as it is just easy to understand and if you looked at the meaning of the word reach it is either closer or further away. With a crop sensor the subject is closer in the viewfinder so its no wonder people understand this as reach, even if it might not be technically correct. I will work harder on not using the word focal length in terms of crop and will outline this in a future video. Thanks again for the comment. Cheers, Duade
by the way. the cropfactor has nothings to do with the focallenght. This is nonsens Canon R7 + RF800 f/11 = 1280mm FOV. 800mm is and stays 800 mm. I think it´s better for you to stop make those stupid videos.
Thanks Christof, I agree that the focal length does not change, I do have FOV in the title of the video and try to use the term FOV or equivalent focal length. Occasionally I get it wrong and say focal length just out of habit as I am human after all. I try to put on the text overlay when I make a mistake. At the end of the day most people have no idea what FOV means so saying wow the viewfinder is so much narrower makes little sense to people. If you say the bird is much bigger in the viewfinder as your effective reach or effective focal length has increased is just easier to grasp for most people. Sorry you think the videos are stupid. Cheers, Duade
Thanks Vivian, I think at lower SS it makes sense to use the electronic shutter to reduce shutter shock. I got plenty of sharp shots with the mechanical shutter but I think I will use electronic a lot also. Cheers, Duade
Always enjoy your videos. What do you think about the image quality of that 800mm f11 lens? It looks to be very good. I have a 100-500 RF and love it would the image quality be similar? (looks like it might actually be)
Hi Mike, the RF100-500 is far superior IMO, the 800 is good in nice light but the AF is not as good and IQ is great but not L series level. Cheers, Duade
whats the best alternative zoom to the sigma 150-600mm on the R7 for around $1000, do you have any idea if sigma are working on a comparable script for a zoom?
Hi Laura, the Sigma still works you just have to take a few more photos. The RF100-400 is a great lens on sale at the moment at B&H geni.us/avzOe. You could get a 1.4 converter as well and have a 140-560 f/11 lens. It is a little slow I must admit, but good to have that option and the lens is so light it is a pleasure to walk around and shoot with. Also doubles as a macro lens. Cheers, Duade
Duane, Great and informative video as usual. Two questions….do you lift weights regularly…that lens looks to weigh a bit? How do you find the time to respond to every comment? Love your work. Mike
Thanks Mike, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The lens is surprisingly very light at I think 1.3kg which is lighter than the EF100-400 II. In regards to responding to comments, I go to bed early and get up early and respond for an hour or two each morning if I can. There may come a point where there are just too many comments to respond to. Cheers, Duade
Great video Duane. On the Canon 800 mm F 11 there is a focal box limited to the inside of the lens.?. With the crop sensor on the R7 is that box larger in the viewfinder? Also with the Eye auto focus tracking the bird within the viewfinder, is the eye autofocus are limited to the box inside the focal area of the 800 mm? Thank you. I think you just answered my question later on in the video. I think you said that the little focusing box inside the 800 on the R7 is quite a bit bigger, taking up almost all of the viewing area. So then if that’s the case then the auto focus should be tracking the bird over most of the sensor. Is this correct? A real frustration I have with the 800 mm on the R5 is the limiting area inside the 800 mm focal box. Especially for birds in flight, or for a composition where the focal area can’t quite be in the center of the lens. Thanks.
Yes, you are correct, an easy way to see how it will look is put your R5 into crop mode and you will see what the coverage on the R7 is like. Cheers, Duade
It’s a Shame you don’t have any wildlife to shoot🤣. Love your vids, still waiting for my R7. But the info from you is giving me a great start when I do receive it. Thank s again will be watching for your next video.
Thanks for a great video i have had the r7 now for about 3 weeks useing it with the sigma 150 600 sport lens and not very impressed some shots were ok, but after watching your video and excellet results i think i will purchase the RF800 F/11 and have a play my self once again thaks for the video regards Alan
Good luck with it, it is a lot of focal length and can be difficult finding the subject and you may need the RF100-400 for the shorter stuff. Have fun, Cheers, Duade
Duane, thanks for sharing your demo and thoughts. I do have the RF 600mm (not the 800mm) and just received my R7. I also have the EF 70-300mm L lens, and hopefully this combo will help? I do have a quick question: is it a good idea to set up one slow sd card for jpeg, and use the faster UHS-ii sd card for c-RAW on the second slot? I am confused if it can be setup this way and how as the instructions were clear?
Steve, just shoot in RAW only to your fast card, no need to shoot in jpeg, that will just slow down the camera. The combo you have should be perfect. Have fun, Cheers, Duade
Nice video. Fantastic photos. I'm envious of your ability to track and frame these birds. As soon as my eye goes to the viewfinder I loose all concept of spatial awareness and I am as likely to have 32 photos of my boots as I am in having 1 photo of the bird 😁😁. I certainly need a lot more practice. What are your thoughts on using dot sights such as the Olympus EE1 dot sight? I was thinking that as I would be able to see more of the environment I should be able to get them in frame initially and also possibly use it to and track them when they are moving.
I have not used the red dot sight but it may help for sure with long lenses. I think over time you get better but I still struggle with very narrow field of view. Cheers, Duade 👍
First thing, I love the pictures!!!! I love the honesty with which you talk about your experiences and how the cameras and other gear work. You leave it real and that is what makes that I love watching your videos. At the moment my life is so busy that I just can't get time to take pictures. It is the dry season here and after 10am it gets so hot out that I can't work outside and my job is working outside so I have to try to make use of the cool in the morning and in the afternoon to be able to finish as much as possible. Keep taking pictures friend, enjoy Gods creation but don't forget the creator.
This is awesome. I work at a camera store and wondered how enthusiastically I could recommend this combination to a customer. In the right light and with subjects at the right distance and in the open to make them easy to locate in that tiny field of view, this looks like a stunning option. And easy to carry too, which is a real benefit for those of us who are older. Agree that it should be paired with a companion zoom.
Hi. I really like this video review, I want to ask if you have the possibility to do a video review with other lenses, for example the sigma 150-600 and similar, how would it work for wildlife photo + video even in worse light
Duade, another great video and the male Flame Robin is a truly stunning bird. My R7 arrived last week so I'm getting up to speed with it. To go from a 5DS to the R7, is from about 4 fps to 30fps seems magical in itself, but with the subject tracking it seems otherworldly! I have used it on my Sigma 150-500 and I get a few soft shots (the pulsing) and some rolling shutter, but my keeper rate is through the roof! It's by no means perfect but I'm delighted with my R7 - I haven't even used video yet! Thanks for all your work!👍
Thanks Ruairi, I am so happy it finally arrives and you are getting some nice keepers, it really is a big jump as you mention. Have fun out there, Cheers, Duade
Thank you for this video. I was engrossed! The birds of Australia are so pretty and so different from those we see in the UK and I love your images. I am still researching a suitable next camera and the R7 is one that I am very interested in, but this big lens would be too heavy for me. I don't know anything about Canon lenses and would be chuffed if you could suggest any others that might be suitable for animal and bird photography that would go with the R7? I could then research them further and figure out combined camera+lens weight, and camera+lens costs, to see what suits my 'strength' and budget best! No worries if that is too big an ask. (I will still watch your videos!!)😁
Thanks, I highly suggest you check out my review of the RF100-400, it would make a perfect companion to the R7 and is very light. Cheers, Duade ruclips.net/video/jVdQT0m3lok/видео.html
@@Duade Thank you so much. I will do that. In fact I may already have watched it before out of interest, but not taking it on board with a view to using it with a new camera at that point. I will watch with intent this time! 👍
Excellent work, Duade! Especially during the Flame Robin section. You worked to get a great sun angle during the setting sun with the light coming from behind you. I find that the R7 struggles to focus a little bit in low light or with small apertures like the 800 f/11 or the 100-500 with an extender forces you to work with. That shutter sure is loud! The R7 shutter is much louder than my R6. I find I can get away with lower shutter speeds in electronic shutter mode because there is shutter shock that can cause blurry images. Good to know that I can switch back to the mechanical shutter once I get up to 1/800. I'm looking forward to hearing the information in the next video that you mention at 14:28 and seeing if it is similar to what I have experienced. Thanks, Duade.
Thanks Phil, yes I agree with everything you have said, I have been testing mechanical and electronic and electronic does appear to have more keepers but the wobble and warping is annoying. I guess it is just finding which one works best for you, Cheers, Duade
David Barber i was doing a football game at 730 when a man came up to me and said all his photo are very dark I said that is f11 its NO Good at this time of Day YOU I will not tell you how unhappy is
Thanks Terry, yes in low light it will struggle for sure, I assume he had AUTO ISO on and it was hitting the max setting so could not get any lighter. Cheers, Duade
Hi Duade! Really nice video! Have been waiting for you to review this combo. At this effective focal length, did you run into problems with introduction of motion blur when handholding it? What was the lowest shutter speed you felt you could use when shooting handheld and still get sharp images?
Johan, yes, at this FOV my shaking hands just make everything worse and I did get a lot of OOF shots, partly me and partly the AF struggled at times. I got plenty of sharp shots but I also got a lot of poor shots. I think on the R7 it really is pushing the boundary and I will discuss the challenges in my next video. It still got nice shots but you get what you pay for. Cheers, Duade
I had been waiting for this video to see how this combination would work. The pictures in good light looked really crisp. You also really got a sense of how much joy you got from that effective focal length just walking around in the field. This combinaton paired with the RF 100-400mm would be such a good budget set-up for someone just starting on wildlife photography.
Just wondering what the results would be like comparing the R7 to the R5 in aps-c mode, leaving pricing out of the equation. is it better to stretch to the R5 for an 'all in one' camera? As usual, a great and informative episode Duade.
@@Duade, @Kevin Blythe: I wonder whether the higher megapixel compensates some of this in this comparison... 32.5 MP against 17 MP aprox on the R5. At the same time, I always remember when people compared the (medium format) Fuji GFX 50S (51 MP) against upcoming FF cameras with more and more MP, the techie guys always replied: Ah but the pixels in the Fuji are larger, so you have a better quality in the Fuji files even if it trails in amount of MP against a, say, 60 MP full frame... I keep wondering if this is the case with Canon R5 in apsc mode vs Canon R7. Whether the second beats the first in amount of MP, but the first beats the second in the quality of them. Not a techie guy myself. Really asking myself these questions, so I extend them to you 😂. Cheers, keep up the good work!
I really enjoy your videos both for the information and to see things that are not in my part of the world. I have an R5 and rf 100-400 with a 1.4 extender when I know I'll be looking for small birds. I have been thinking, once I get caught up on my previous lens-purchase expenses, of getting the rf 800. Other than less pixel density, which could limit extreme cropping (the cropping in your images seemed "modest"), if I used the rf 800 on the R5 in crop mode, would I get somewhat similar results to what you are demonstrating with the R7? Or would I be better off losing an f stop and using my 1.4 converter with rf 800 instead of using the crop mode? Cheers from Ohio, USA, Ted
G'day Ted, I think long term the RF800 could be a good second lens when you know you need reach with small birds. You will need good light and the AF is not as good as your 100-400. But for its price it does offer plenty of reach when you need it. I do like the RF100-400 with a 1.4 as it is more versatile but 560mm vs 800mm is noticeable. Cheers, Duade
You got some lovely images of those stunning male flame robins. I guess the limited AF box in the centre & minimum focusing distance could be an issue in certain situations though right?
Steve, yes those are its issues and the f11 aperture meaning you need plenty of light. 800mm is also a lot on a crop sensor and can be difficult to use. Cheers, Duade
I picked up this lens from the Canon refurbished store for 719.USD. Has the same one year warranty in the US, so why not have the money. The FOV is tricky. I shoot with both eyes open to help me get the lens in position. While the reach is amazing, like you were doing, I find it great for getting nice shots of small skittish birds that you can’t normally get close enough to. It is an easy lens to carry. The weight of the lens pairs nicely with the camera body. Great video and images!
Thanks Jeff, yes I think for the price you get what you pay for, and that is a very unique lens that allows you to capture birds at a distance. The IQ and AF may not compete with the L series but at its price I don't think we can expect it too. It does its job well. Glad to hear you are getting good use out of it. Cheers, Duade
What an exciting session for you Duade. The colours are amazing! I would like to go somewhere with no traffic and such a landscape. Nice web on your mirror
What stunning colours to brighten up a drab dull day here. The photos were fabulous. Like someone else commented getting the R7 in the UK seems to be impossible just now so I'm having to stick with my DSLR. Thanks again for the informative video.
Really enjoyed watching this session with you - beautiful light and birds. I have the R7 and 800 and sometimes find it hard to locate even in the evf but when everything is right, the light and SS, like yours, I can get some lovely results, and as someone who would never buy, or be able to carry any of the big whites,am very grateful to Canon for coming up with this lens, and the very capable RF 100-400 too. Anyway, can you please tell me your reasons for mechanical shutter as I have found electronic to give slightly better results for me, can see mechanical is working well for you though. Thanks for the great content.👌
Thanks Jayne, congrats on the combo, I was just testing mechanical for this video, I think electronic delivers more sharp shots but you just have to put up with the warping and wobbling in electronic. Cheers, Duade
Great video! I enjoy seeing the original RAW file and then the cropped and sweetened version. I was amazed that you were able to shoot at 1/500 (and even 1/400) with the 1200mm lens. I am very tempted to buy that lens.
Thanks Blair, it does have its issues and there are a lot of compromises to be made. I did get plenty of soft and OOF shots shooting at those SS but plenty of sharp ones also. I have a video coming in a week or so trying lots of different lenses. Cheers, Duade
G'day James, it all depends on the lenses I had. If I had my 500 f4 and 1.4x I would choose the R6 as the low light capabilities and AF are just much better. If I only had a 400mm lens then I would likely go with the R7 as the extra MP and crop factor will help make the subject bigger. The R7 performs very well in good light but really struggles in low light so if you shoot a lot of low light the R6 will perform much better. Cheers, Duade
Congrats, have fun, it does have its challenges for sure and the IQ and AF do struggle at times but in good light it works well. Just take lots of bursts to increase your keepers. Cheers, Duade
R7 and RF800 f11 is my go to combination for most shots at the moment. I like I can fill the frame more with the smaller birds I have been chasing recently. I agree the autofocus and eye tracking struggle in low light and also if the bird is in a cluttered scene.
Oh Duade, what a joy to watch you enjoy (y)our passion 😀!!! May the birding gods stay with you ! Nice to see your approach of taking some first shots, and then see how to gradually adapt your position (and/or the environment) to improve the image !
Great video Duade, I enjoy so much watching your videos! I need some help guys: I am currently looking to buy the Canon R7, and I would like a tip on what lenses to get (alongside the kit lens) for wildlife photography (mostly safari-style). I was looking at the RF100-400 but then saw some older EF 100-400 L (i) and EF70-200 L (ii) secondhand lenses for a similar price, and now I don't know which one to choose... what are your recommendations?
Hi Mate. I just wanted to let you know you’re driving on the wrong side of the street , and even your steering wheel is on the wrong side ! It’s OK in the outback (I guess), but don’t try that in town ! 😂 More seriously, Duade I noticed your raw files looked pretty good coming out of the R7. You think that’s true ? I do think the 100-500 produces better images though. DUH… My question is; do you think the shutter sound somewhat negates the crop body reach over the R6/R7 ? Can you stay in electronic shutter and still use it effectively in the field ? Also, do you think the lite weight of the F11 negates the camera shake when using the heavier 100-500 ? The quality of your raw files here make me wonder. Your experience is much appreciated. Thanks. Great Video Duade. 😊
I wondered why the Police keep stopping me ;-) The R7 is ok but I'm not sure it is as good as the R6/R5 in terms of IQ, AF etc. The reach is very nice in good light and it does have its advantages. I think I will use electronic in the future and just put up with the wobbling and warping. Overall once I am done testing the R7 I cannot see myself picking it up over the R5. Cheers, Duade
Thanks for your reply Duade. Getting your impressions of this, with your experience using all these bodies and lenses in real life is much better than me just watching this only on You Tube. Much appreciate you and your fun videos. 😊🌈
Wonderful video, with a lot of amazing shots mate. I use the same tecnic when i am photographing too. Get some shots to secure the registration, and move closer and closer. Have to say that this lens looks very interesting. Looking forward to next video. Cheers, Bjoern
Mate, yes an interesting lens however I did have some AF and IQ issues with many of the shots and I am unsure if I would choose the lens that often. Only in really good light where I need reach would I go for it. I think maybe something like the RF100-400 with a 1.4 is just more usable all around. If you already had a 100-400 then I could see the RF800 as a second option. Cheers, Duade
Another great video. I have a question. Would you prefer an R6 with the 800mm or the R7 with the 800mm for wildlife? I already have the R6 and 800mm and I also like to shoot macro. Thanks so much!
Hi Cheryl, I think the R6 is the better camera with better AF and ISO capabilitiues. I would likely pick up the RF100-400 or RF100-500 as they will allow macro style shots as you can get very close. They are both wonderful lenses and work well in combination with the RF800 f11. Cheers, Duade
I would never have considered this combo, but now that you've tested it, I might just bring this lens out for a spin. Yes, the AF does struggle in low light. So what I've done is that as a backup, I would disable continuous tracking and switch to spot, then active eye AF with the back button when I want it.
I have known that excitement when a plan comes together, but not as often as I would like. That combination seems to work well together, looking forward to your follow up video. Please keep up the great content.👏🏻🇨🇦
Question is should I go for Canon 800 f11 instead of Sigma 150-600 C. Because price range is same and I mostly shoot at 600mm and above...I already owned Canon RF 100-400.
I would get the 800 f11. I have an M6 II with the Sigma 150-600 and a 1.4x extender and I'm thinking of getting an R7 and the 800 f11. The sigma lens tends to pulse in its focusing and is rather heavy.
Great question, two different lenses, the Sigma is a lot heavier and does have some AF issues. But the 800 is at f/11 and has its own AF inconsistency. I think if you already own the 100-400 I might be inclined to grab the 800 as it is great for when you really need reach. Cheers, Duade
Your joy really comes through in the videos. And you're putting so much work into them--it almost feels like you have a whole crew with you, with all the setup and 3rd person shots. Kudos!
Awesome video like always! Finally after a long, long wait my R7 arrived, I am super happy with my new camera 📸🐦👍❤️
Oh that is great to hear Miguel, so happy for you, have fun with it, Cheers, Duade
Great video.
I have not yet activated similar results with my 800 F11.
My keep rate still below 40% at this point.

Questions. 1 How long were you there? 2 The dead trees are they from a fire?
Thanks John, I was there for maybe 3 hours, they dammed and flooded this area which killed the trees. They then undammed the lake as evaporation was too high and this revealed all the dead trees. Cheers, Duade
Loving your R7 videos, RUclips recommended your channel to me because I've been looking at this camera so much. This is definitely reinforcing how much I want to buy this camera.
I really enjoy how you show your whole process, and the way you transition from the RAW image to your edited version is great! It's something that I haven't seen a lot of other creators do.
Thanks for the comment and I am happy you are enjoying the videos and the raw to final image transition. Cheers, Duade
Very enjoyable video, great work
Thanks mate, Cheers, Duade
On a bright, sunny day, ISO 1600, clouds in the sky and on a clear day, 12500. In the dusk of the forest, it will be ISO 250.000
How loud is that shutter ?? Sounds like telegrams going back in WW2 days 😂. Nice birds tho 😃👌🏻
Thanks Steve, yes, it is very loud and I turned it down in the edit :-) Cheers, Duade
Another question for RF800. How did you mount that lens with your gimbal?
There is a mount on the bottom of the lens that allows you to attach an arca swiss plate.
You are better off shooting in full frame and cropping afterwards, there is no change in IQ. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade thanks!!!
Great video!
How does the R7 performs with the old 400 f5.6?
I test it in my next video which should be out in a week or so. Cheers, Duade
Looks easy, but get those shots while you film your self explaining what your are doing.....must be hard, great videos Duade, thanks!!
Thanks Rafael, yes, it has its challenges that is for sure, Cheers, Duade
The mechanical shutter sounds like a wood pecker is that a bad thing?
It can disturb wildlife for sure. The R5 or R6 is much quieter. Cheers, Duade 👍
Hi Duade. thanks for the video.
Thanks, yes, you touch on the perfect use case for this combo. If you have good light it performs well. Cheers, Duade
Nice pictures. Is that camera as loud as it sounds on the video? It sounds like a machine gun!
Lol it is louder believe it or not, shooting in electronic probably makes more sense as it is silent. Cheers, Duade
Great pics.
Congrats on the gear, the RF100-400 is a beautiful lens for the price, I think it is on sale at B&H at the moment. Cheers, Duade
Great video, as always :). Is eye tracking for birds working in video?
Cheers!
Yes, the eye tracking does work in video on the R7, Cheers, Duade
What Retailer did you order it thro/from ?

Great video. The eye-tracking auto-focus does appear to struggle with some larger mammals, I have noticed my R6 struggles a bit sometimes with moose, especially.
Thanks Andy, yes, I had a lot of trouble with the Kangaroos to be honest, hopefully over time they improve the algorithms. Cheers, Duade
I also faced similar struggle with bison and black bear. It wasn't identifying the eye even if I place the focus point on the eye.
Super long telephoto is great if you have the right light and no heat distortion. It's great to be able to apply just the minimum crop, especially on the lower-resolution cameras. I've taken to using my 800mm with a 1.4 teleconverter and finding that I'm getting good results (in bright light, of course).
Thanks Kevin, yes it has a best use case scenario so you really need a second lens with it. Good to hear you are getting good results. Cheers, Duade
Good lordy that Flame Robin!!!! What a bird, great pics of it too.
Thanks Shaun, it sure is stunning, we are so lucky to have the Australasian Robins with all of their colours, it really is crazy. Cheers, Duade
Loving your peaceful and happy demeanour as well and the wonderful environment and captures!
Thanks, it is my pleasure, Cheers, Duade
do you have any plans to test out an R3 for wildlife, i'm thinking the BSI sensor will be useful in low light, something that should have been in the R7
Thanks Laura, I will try it out in the future, I used it once and it felt great and I agree in low light it is a beast. Cheers, Duade
Hi Duade, I feel enjoyed your birding episodes so much, thanks for your uploading.
It is my pleasure Lawrence, I am happy to hear you have enjoyed them. Cheers, Duade
Nice one Duade! That looked like a fun afternoon 🙂
Thanks mate, it sure was, Cheers, Duade
I wonder if the lens will be a big seller in the U.K as an F11 might struggle in our light conditions.
Possibly not Gary as it would struggle in low light, especially on the R7. Cheers, Duade
It was fine on my R5 but challenging for BIF shots due to the high iso to keep the shutter speed up and the reduced AF area. It's very sharp for the money and got me some nice shots. I don't think I'd use this lens with an R7 though. It would be a bit of a disaster iso wise I think.
hit the like before i start the video, and wish i can hit it again, thanks a million for sharing this fabulous photo session.
Thank you so much, you are too kind, Cheers, Duade
I love this format where you show the raw, the crop and the final picture. Nice videos.
Thanks Roman, yes, great to hear it is helpful, Cheers, Duade
@@Duade Thanks, Duade! That was really helpful!

Great video, Duade! I have a question- does using the mechanical shutter at 1280mm cause the shake to make some images not tack sharp? Thanks!
If the shutter speed is fast enough the subject (in focus) will always be sharp.
Thanks Vivian, I think at lower SS it makes sense to use the electronic shutter to reduce shutter shock. I got plenty of sharp shots with the mechanical shutter but I think I will use electronic a lot also. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade thanks Duade! I have enough trouble at 600mm, so 1280mm made me wonder!!
I saw someone who tested the R7 and found shutter stock wasn't really noticable above 1/500. Not sure what lens they used
Always enjoy your videos.
I was hoping you'll try the R7 with EF 100-400 5.6 L MK ii really enjoy watching your video so much, more power and always stay safe.
Thanks Clarito, I do in my next video which will be out in a week or so.
Duane,
Great and informative video as usual.
Thanks George, sorry to hear your camera is taking awhile to turn up, yes, we are lucky down here. Cheers, Duade
Good Video :D
And what is your opinion on the Sigma 150-500mm 5-6.3 DG OS APO HSM?
Thanks Das, I think the Sigma 150-600C is the better option, Cheers, Duade
First thing, I love the pictures!!!! I love the honesty with which you talk about your experiences and how the cameras and other gear work. You leave it real and that is what makes that I love watching your videos. At the moment my life is so busy that I just can't get time to take pictures. It is the dry season here and after 10am it gets so hot out that I can't work outside and my job is working outside so I have to try to make use of the cool in the morning and in the afternoon to be able to finish as much as possible. Keep taking pictures friend, enjoy Gods creation but don't forget the creator.
Thanks Michael, I appreciate your comment and I am glad you are enjoying the videos, take care in the heat. Cheers, Duade
Thanks, yes you got it exactly, if you want the bird big in the frame and shoot in good light it can capture very nice shots. Cheers, Duade

Thanks Ken, yes it must have been there for some time :-) Cheers, Duade

Thanks Kyle, totally agree, for its price it offers good value. We just need nice light all the time ;-) Cheers, Duade

Just wondering what the results would be like comparing the R7 to the R5 in aps-c mode, leaving pricing out of the equation. is it better to stretch to the R5 for an 'all in one' camera? As usual, a great and informative episode Duade.
Thanks Kevin, if you can afford the R5 it is the superior camera for sure. The ISO performance, the AF, IBIS etc are just better. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade Thanks so much for your input! Cheers, Ted
From the current lineup of Canon mirrorless cameras, which is best for wildlife photography?
I think the R5 is still the best for wildlife due to the 45mp, the R3 is great for sports. Cheers, Duade
Some cracking shots. Is the lens a comfortable weight when hand held?
Hi David, really depends on your strength but was not a real issue for me. Finding the subject was the hardest part.
Awesome video. Could you do a test with the R7 and the 2x teleconverter?
Thanks David, it should work but it will be hard to use and you would need a lot of light. Cheers, Duade
Good day Daude. I just lost my camera. Hope i can get it back or bought new one in the future days. You are absolutely amazing photographer.
Sorry to hear about your camera Seltun, I hope you find it, Cheers, Duade
Thanks Caroline, yes, a imagine the spider who calls the mirror home is a rather large specimen :-) Cheers, Duade
What stunning colours to brighten up a drab dull day here. The photos were fabulous. Like someone else commented getting the R7 in the UK seems to be impossible just now so I'm having to stick with my DSLR. Thanks again for the informative video.
Thanks May, I appreciate it, yes, the colours on the bird are amazing. Cheers, Duade
Fantastic. I agree Stunning Photographs. I am waiting for my R7 to arrive in New Zealand. Canon NZ states it will arrive late 2022 now.
Thanks Chris, sorry to hear of the delay, they are out of stock here in Australia as well.
If you had to choose between the R6 and the R7 which would you choose and why?
G'day James, it all depends on the lenses I had. If I had my 500 f4 and 1.4x I would choose the R6 as the low light capabilities and AF are just much better. If I only had a 400mm lens then I would likely go with the R7 as the extra MP and crop factor will help make the subject bigger. The R7 performs very well in good light but really struggles in low light so if you shoot a lot of low light the R6 will perform much better. Cheers, Duade
The shutter sounds loud, or can you switch the sound off or do you have to use the Electronic shutter ?
Thanks David, yes, you can turn it off by using electronic shutter, Cheers, Duade
Great days shoot you were like a kid on Christmas morning when the bird landed on the branch in that fantastic light
Thanks Steve, I sure was in my element, a fun afternoon for sure, Cheers, Duade
Jesus my Subwoofer went nuts during the scenes in the car
Sorry about that, Cheers, Duade
I was feeling as giddy as you with each shot you took xD
Great to hear Violet, Cheers, Duade
Great video, can you use full frame lenses on a r7? isnt r7 medium size sensor
Hi Emil, the R7 is a crop sensor so smaller than FF and yes it will use FF RF lenses no issue at all. Cheers, Duade
Got my R7 today, my 800 arrives today
Congrats, have fun, it does have its challenges for sure and the IQ and AF do struggle at times but in good light it works well. Just take lots of bursts to increase your keepers. Cheers, Duade
Greatings from Denmark.
I love you show the RAW file and crop in the final picture. Respect for that.
Thanks, it is my pleasure, it is a great way to learn, Cheers, Duade
I believe this would be new compact combo for the police department 🔭🔭
Thanks, yes, a good spy camera for sure, so much reach. Cheers, Duade
The stutter sounds like a cat purring 😄😄
Thanks Nokia, yes, an interesting sound for sure, Cheers, Duade
The best video of this gear! Bring more please!
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback, Cheers, Duade
R7 and RF800 f11 is my go to combination for most shots at the moment. I like I can fill the frame more with the smaller birds I have been chasing recently. I agree the autofocus and eye tracking struggle in low light and also if the bird is in a cluttered scene.
Thanks Paul, great to hear from someone using this combo, Cheers, Duade
Oh Duade, what a joy to watch you enjoy (y)our passion 😀!!! May the birding gods stay with you !
Nice to see your approach of taking some first shots, and then see how to gradually adapt your position (and/or the environment) to improve the image !
Thanks Werner, this comment just popped up which is weird, thanks for the comment, yes it was a lot of fun. Cheers, Duade
Great video Duade, I enjoy so much watching your videos! I need some help guys:
I am currently looking to buy the Canon R7, and I would like a tip on what lenses to get (alongside the kit lens) for wildlife photography (mostly safari-style). I was looking at the RF100-400 but then saw some older EF 100-400 L (i) and EF70-200 L (ii) secondhand lenses for a similar price, and now I don't know which one to choose... what are your recommendations?
It just so happens my next video will be on lenses for the R7, hopefully that will help you. Hopefully out in a week or so. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade Wow, great to hear! I am eager to see it🤩
@@Duade Thank you so kindly for your response and your terrific videos!
great photos again im taking my R7 on a trip to the local zoo/
Great to hear David, have fun, Cheers, Duade 👍
hi from england trying to find your video ref rf 800 AF and IQ issues I can't seem to find the link ?
I would never have considered this combo, but now that you've tested it, I might just bring this lens out for a spin. Yes, the AF does struggle in low light. So what I've done is that as a backup, I would disable continuous tracking and switch to spot, then active eye AF with the back button when I want it.
Sounds like a good strategy Kenneth, always good to have traditional AF available when the eye tracking struggles. Cheers, Duade
What a great day you had with wonderful shots. I was nearly out there with you. I wonder if the 600 RF was a better choice with the R7?
Wolfgang, I suspect it is as 800 is just a little too much at times. Cheers, Duade
I have known that excitement when a plan comes together, but not as often as I would like. That combination seems to work well together, looking forward to your follow up video.
Please keep up the great content.👏🏻🇨🇦
Thanks Larry, I appreciate the feedback, Cheers, Duade
It's like you can read my mind with these reviews... contemplating what lens to use with my upcoming R7 purchase. Thanks!
Your joy really comes through in the videos. And you're putting so much work into them--it almost feels like you have a whole crew with you, with all the setup and 3rd person shots. Kudos!
Thanks, I am glad you are enjoying them, Cheers, Duade
