Well Bushido, (the samurai way) basically revolved around you going into combat wishing for death. This made them formidable, since they basically didn't care if they survived. They had no fear, at all. They believed if you go into war wishing for life you'll perish, and conversely going into battle wishing for death has the opposite effect.
I don't know why people are saying this is edgy. Most cultures across Europe and Asia have folk songs and chants lamenting the fuility of life. In times of war, it's understandable that a soldier must consider his life valueless, only a tool to be used for his country/lord

All these ram translations are so cool, it really adds to the game mode to hear each faction chanting in their native tongue as they march up to the enemies gate.
This is actually pretty good. The message I'm picking up is "Man, doesn't it suck that you're trying your best, but get killed by a man who doesn't even care?"
"Bushido is realized in the presence of death. This means choosing death whenever there is a choice between life and death. There is no other reasoning."
Nobody seems to get that this is actually the Japanese way to be cheerful and upbeat and supposed to harden the hearts of the lower soldiers, who by lamenting the futility of their life gather the courage to fight vigorously even until death.
Full chant, as translated, for those interested in reading it straight up: "Would you regret that your life ends like this?" "I won't hesitate 'cause I've been dead from the beginning." Officer: "The skillful hawk [hides its talon's]" "Nobody knows of the dead warriors in the field with flowers growing." Officer: "One has to do more than preserve than to receive!" "Sad has my life been, fated to produce no fruit!" Then it repeats, the officer just does the second part of his first call. Obviously, when you translate it into English it doesn't have the same tempo as when spoken in Japanese.

I get the impression that this is less about the samurai being depressed and more taunting the enemy for feeling despair at their imminent demise. As in “Are you only now realizing that you can die? We’ve all been dead men walking. Had you been as mindful of death as we have, perhaps you’d still be able to put up a fight instead of wallowing in despair.”

The Samurai and the Viking have a surprisingly similar mindset. The Warrior will always end up dead, no matter there efforts. There is no point in fearing what is already decided. But in this, they reflect each other. Where the Viking see Glory in living the Story, the Song, the Samurai sees only Service and Inevitability. Either way, Fight. Fight. Fight to the end.
You walked there during the whole thing like your the final boss waiting for the main character, while watching him at some of the main moments from a position he can’t get to.
In reality, it isn't about depression, it is about death. In accordance to Bushido, to become a perfect warrior/samurai is to think of nothing but death. To serve your master well with honour, to bring glory to your house and clan, to think of nothing else but death
I said this to someone else but I'll just copy paste it since I want to show the reality of bushido. Bushido, as we now know it, is a myth. The concept of bushido wasn't a thing until the edo period, well after the sengoku jidai (warring states period) ended. While some samurai had values and morals similar to bushido, it wasn't a code that all samurai followed. When you think of samurai, you likely think of samurai from the sengoku jidai or before, but samurai before the edo period didn't follow any moral codes, if their lord told them to kill someone, they would do it. There was no honorable duel or fairness. While some samurai may have not feared death, the ashigaru were definitely terrified in battle, but they are not technically samurai. Samurai loyalty is complicated but it's likely the large majority of samurai would give their life defending their lord/daimyo, because if they didn't, they're out of a job lol
If i remember correctly , samurai before going to combat consider himself dead so he could not fear anything, what do you have to fear when you are already dead? That the source of he fatalistic lyrics

One part is the death poem of Minamoto no Yorimasa, a famous samurai and poet of the Genpei War and among the first recorded cases of seppuku/suicide in the fave of defeat in the battlefield. Specifically it's the part of 'sad has been my life, fated no fruit to produce'
