Another fabulous watch. How many designers come out to see and advise somebody who paid 2k on an abandoned version of their boat? And smile, be so helpful and positive. You wanted a wharram and got the bargain you needed, the work you have to do is teaching you so much and you'll reap the benefit of that for years to come. Bloody good work.

Nice one Mark, and Hanneke. Nice to see Hanneke picked up that your first non-scarf was on the compression side of the beam, and will likely be OK. Also, another thing Hanneke picked up, spreaders on a cat rig are not needed. With alloy spars you can go to about minimum 9 degrees shroud angles. Only monohulls need to do this. You have more like 20 degrees even on the cap shrouds, and the lowers have even more. What a fascinating video, with Hanneke there. Thanks to both of you !

Hanneke is a mind of information and was clearly an equal partner in the design of these wonderful boats, My mate Bill has a 31ft Tiki and although the hulls are in excellent condition, the rig has been a nightmare, he has tried cutter rig, ketch rig and now rigged her back to bermuda rig with a big genoa, but going to windward is very difficult. She is a one off design which is a problem, but he's over the moon with it and has never lost faith in her sailing abilities.

To speed up your next beam repair - when you're setting those wooden sections in, then planing them down, it's helpful to set a router at /just/ above the level you want, rout some channels in the wood, take off the high sections with chisels, then use the planer to finish. Much quicker and your planer blades will last longer, less time to clog, less clearing of your plane.

    • @saylaveenadmearedead

As I mentioned earlier in the RESTORATION there's more than one way to skin a cat... my fav electric tool is hands down the makita grinder. With a sanding disc making a scarf is as quick as a peanut butter sandwich.

    • @ashtontechhelp
      @ashtontechhelp 9 месяцев назад +1

      Further thought:
Rather than making your scarf cut at 45 degrees in the vertical plane, as you have done, you could make a much greater scarf in the horizontal plane, much more easily. You would be using more wood - but your joint would be over a longer section of the horizontal plane, which I think is better where you have horizontal loading. I believe this is how wood workers usually do a scarf joint.

You have too much faith in the glue. I would have replaced the entire top member of the beams, Glue is strong in shear but not strong enough in tension. It would have taken about the same amount of time, and been 100% in the seaways you will encounter on an ocean passage. I still believe you should rout out a full depth of the insert groove in both sides of your repair addition, extending into the existing beam, probably TWO grooves, and into these grooves add timber inserts of a high tensile strength, to give the top member the overall tensile strength it needs throughout its length.
An alternative would have been to cast them in fibreglass as a D spar--but a really expensive option.
What a GIFT to have Hanneke aboard with her experience and expertise--

I'll say it time and time again... I was doubtful at first with this, but you keep crushing it. With all of this new info and so many super knowledgeable people, the designer included, you've got this. Easy.

Wow! So lucky to have one of the designers onsite to critique your work and advise. Definitely do exactly as she advised for those motor boxes!

This might be an odd comment: Your last 2 thumbnails are going against the compulsory YT BS, plus they look absolutely amazing.

    Hi Mark
    watching your west systems technique
i have used west systems for a number of years (35) the easiest way i have found of measuring it out is to buy some plastic disposable wine glases or similar ( not to big) pump the resin in first and then the harder i find the hardner floats on top of the resin so when you hold it up before mixing together you can visualise whether you have the right proportions you have only to get the proportions wrong and it is massive job pulling the joint apart and scrapping and cleaning everything down the hardner tends to crystallise at the nozzle so you cant aways rely on the pump for the right proportion always ere on have more hardner if you aren't sure.

How nice is that, the designer of your boat comes by and looks at your restoration work, and immediately starts with a skilled inspection, a professional Hanneke knows what she is talking about.

Mark, its been enjoyable watching you from your days in Kunming playing Cards Against Humanity with glasses of Georgian Wine to witness you work on your own craft for the deep blue seas. She’s beautiful, you’re doing great!

Amazing to see Hanneke at work. If you're concerned about the scarf angle on the beams being shallow (which it is), add some glass to the outside locally. Give plenty of overlap and quite a few layers.
