How very kind of you to say so, I'm glad you found them helpful. I would still recommend a revision guide, though; get as many different interpretations as possible.
Cant express how helpful this was i was struggling with conflict poetry thank youuu can you do more on inspector calls characters with alternative interpretation 😊
Did he even go to war. We never actually see that the 'son' goes off to fight in fact it seems that the 'mother' just happened to be at a memorial and the poet uses it to draw upon sadness. Also we don't know the child is a boy.
You're right, no gender is identified; in fact, gender isn't the focus of this poem which is why I would suggest that means the soldier is male. If it were female, I think there would be more symbolism in the poem to provoke the reader to challenge gender bias in war poetry. The reference to the spiked, gelled hair might allude to a traditional, although not exclusively, masculine hair style but this evidence could be considered tenuous. Any analysis of a poem is based on inference, interpretation and opinion and everyone is entitled to view the text in different ways. I just happen to have the opinion that a poem called Poppies, a national symbol for remembering those who have died in conflict; a poem that begins with a reference to Armistice day, traditionally a day where we remember those who have died in conflict; and a poem that contains an image of a war memorial, a monument used to signify those who have died in conflict is most likely to be about someone - gender unspecified - that died in conflict. But, hey, we all have our opinions: you write whatever you want in your exam.
Thank-you for that, I was told my comment by a teacher who made a very compelling case. your response has given me a lot more so support my initial ideas which were very similar to yours ☺
Jason Keene I have merely summarised the poem's message; remember that there are a number of different themes that the poem explores such as loss, courage, family etc. It is not just the message that you will be writing about, though. You will need to discuss how that message is delivered and evaluate the effect on the reader. Understanding the message should form the foundation to your analysis and should underpin everything you have to say about the poem.

Drew Thornley thr point is jane weir saud it for herself that.it was from a mothers perceptive for a son going to war
Poetry is subjective and I feel that it is important to understand this.
what is the message of the poem?
Soldiers are not the only ones damaged by war, it has a far reaching impact on the lives of many people.
