Another masterpiece of model building, flying, photography, and editing. Simply magic to get all together in the same place and time! Apparently the ship is named after the city of Elmira, New York. That's considered the home of full-scale gliding in the USA. That's where the Schweizer brothers began their glider business. Also, the famous soaring site Harris Hill, home to the National Soaring Museum.
each time i see you flying at that cliff spot i start to droooole , what a great a peaceful form of flying with the most minimal amount of energy just for the couple servos and rx and tx no noise or limited fly time with battery powered just seems so so relaxing ive sloped a couple of times and was a fair drive to the cliffs and was a main road on the opposite side and not a lot of room to land but manageable and was the best fun and taught me a lot about where the lift is and how far out you can go before it looses lift and so on but yes would love to get a model specifically for slope soaring once again and make that extra effort as its most rewarding and a change of rc flying style i suppose is like a holiday , cheers and thanx for sharing you beauty builds with us all. :-)
You and your wife have got the format and presentation of these videos off to perfection. This one has been edited to fit the music. And they're posted so us Brits can watch them as we eat our cornflakes. Makes a good start to the day.
The build commentary is greatly appreciated! Doesn't look like you had any trouble turning. Your modifications improved both the looks and the performance.
John. I broke both my legs in an accident at work in June and will probably be laid up until next March !! Your videos have mesmerised and inspired me to try out a hobby that I have always yearned to try. I have been buisy resurching and accumulating tools and am waiting for a sunbird kit to arrive. Probably not a very wise 1st time build but I am quite adaptable and time is on my hands plus I think it and its big brother the bird of time are so beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration John.
Sorry to hear about your accident. I’ve never built a Sunbird but have seen the kits for sale. Good luck with the build and I’m sure you will love flying it. Where are you located? Do you have any nice slopes nearby or are you going to put a motor on it?
I live in Mid Wales so plenty of mountains but I think a motor may make life easier whilst a gain experience with thermals and how the slopes work. My son-in-law is a farmer and owns a large mountain which I nice and accessible and I hope will be ideal for me to make a start plus only the sheep will see my inevitable mistakes ! Regards Graham
John you have done it again. Transformed a 2D drawing to a 3D (or is it 4D) work of art and function that flew as free as the breeze - one with it right off the mark. Congratulations.
Your gliders are so graceful, it would be easy to believe that it is all done with trick photography. No, I’m not accusing you of anything but brilliance in building, setup, and control of your planes. I don’t think that I could do all that work, and then launch the creation towards the ocean. It might not come back!
So elegant !! I always wanted one of these when I started flying models many years ago. Never actually got to build one though. Great to see one flying. Thank you.
It appears to turn just fine with the larger rudder. Funny to see the over sized rudder but that as pretty common the older free right models that were then modded for RC. Seriously enjoy your videos, thank you again for your time, skills, and passion! Please thank your camera woman as well!!!
Love the video, and the glider. Enjoyed my days of stick building, still have a glider kit to build and numerous plans. Too many hobbies, and no real good flying spots at my current location. Belonged to a nice club in Germany, and often visited the Wasserkuppe. Living in the mountains of NC, beautiful views, just limited cleared areas, and most have overhead power lines as obstacles.
Back to basics flying!......what a discovery your videos are, I’ve been dabbling for 20 yrs in heavy scale multi function sailplane machines which are a joy when everything comes together, but not relaxing like your gliding, more of an adrenaline rush, this takes me back to Kamco Kloudrider and Chris Hughes Soarcerer days on the Dorset hills and South Coast cliffs!.....brilliant, thank you!, now where are those Kloudrider plans?....
Hi John, Thanks for the very relaxing video. Lost my father on Monday and watching this video was just what the doctor ordered, and a maiden to boot. Katherine was great with the camera and the sound track was spot on. Stay safe.
Very good information/mods. It's the best looking/flying Elmira I've ever seen. Thank you, John! Beautiful area. Beautiful model. Beautiful flying. Beautiful video. And, let me end by saying...B-E-A-Utiful!
Nice design and build John. The plane harkens memories of the 1-26 I built from a Sterling kit but is a lot simpler and non-scale. The sailplane is majestic on the cliffs and looks the thermal glider as well. I like the building of the plane being included in the video. Thanks!
My original wouldn't turn at low speed even with a bigger rudder so I went the other route. The three piece wing converted easily to ailerons and gullwing, and she flew beautifully.
Just watched this on my tv and as always cracking flight cracking music and cracking filming, thanks John and of course your good lady, stay safe and with my best regards from Alan in south Yorkshire 👍🤗🤗
My dad built one of these from the original kit. Some years later I recovered it and flew it with Horizon RC gear. I am not sure but dad may have flown it with a reed outfit. It looked lovely but it didn't fly that well. Nice to see one flying again, I am tempted to build one again.
John secondo me questo esteticamente e il piu bello aliante.della tua collezione.fantastico.mi piace molto la cappottina di plexigas.bravo.se potessi avere il progetto sarebbe bello .saluti ciao gaetano from nord calabria italy.
John Woodfield RC Gliders It was wonderful, it’s a motor glider, so I gained some altitude and cut the motor and it just floated around the sky, very stable. And it was a landing I could walk away from, so good! Thanks for asking.
Nice. Going to polyhedral and increasing fin area accordingly was a good way to improve the turning and keep it smooth. Poly wings with long tips look good, too.
Well it does not have a problem turning now, you have made modification to the wings and despite its size you can still catch it. Great build and flying as usual from you John. Love it
Your going to need a bigger hanger. Greetings from the Herefordshire hills

What a beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really do 🤣 hate you! Perfect slope, really beautiful landscape, good weather, perfect construction, terrific flight... please show, a least, a botch 🤣. Best Regards from the North of Spain!
I remember this glider when I was a kid, loved the shape because it's kind of a cross between a Bird of Time and Drifter II, but always hated the canopy, still do rofl!
Great job - it’s all too easy to buy an artf model. I love the designs from this era - I could never afford RC but made loads of ff gliders and rubber powered models - fatal crashes and losses didn’t seem to be a deterrence even with several weeks build times!
A good tip is to ditch the metal spares and use carbon tube if you have a hard landing it tends to break first before the wing does I never use steel rod if I can help it its saved a few models doing this.
That looks like a good compromise size of pinter (59cm roll?), you don't need the whole plan on one sheet when you're building the wings and fuselage separately anyway.
great job john, i download from outerzone as well but ihave to get them printed which costs me money, will have to look into a large format printer as i seem to be building more these days, as i cant fly our club field has been shut for weeks.
Pure magic! I remember one or two of these at the Hole of Horcum bac in the eighties. Had a ship called a Super Kema back then, ring any bells? Stay Safe John (Paul, North Yorks.)
@@SlopeRCGliders It was a Keith Humber design, 'T' tail 3-channel slope aerobatic type. Sarik Hobbies list the plan still. I recall it could handle quite a windspeed range.
You should draw up your own plans for a slope/toe glider. Seems like you’ve built and flown so many models at this point that you could really be a good judge.
Very nice build. You make it look so easy - its relaxing to watch. I think I recognised something in the background. Is the nice little place on the beach still there ?
It looks like the wing ribs were laser cut? (0:29) Are you using a software package to produce CAD files for the laser or doing it by hand? I love the format showing some of the build and the final output watching the model flying is outstanding as always. Thanks for the effort you and your wife put into these postings they are always appreciated. Stay safe.
Really beautiful. I'm so glad you make these very sensible modifications to old classics, much improving them. Did you make the fuselage slightly narrower? The turns look very good. Looks like a great candidate for an enclosed camera.
This is without a doubt one of the best RC channels on YT. No BS, no obnoxious music, just pure sailplanes and flying. Love it.
Thank you so much.

Great flyer, lovely elegant glider and like you put a little about the build
That flys very nicely. Great job.
Lovely. It’s a long walk if the wind drops. KK at its best with your improvements. All very satisfactory.
Pure grace. You make it look so great
Graceful plane. Love the inclusion of a build video!
Gorgeous as always flying. After watching your videos for a long time, I got a glider of my own, and maidened it yesterday!

Wow what a beautiful aircraft! When I saw "Elmira" I was sure it would fly from Harris Hill in Elmira New York, the "soaring capital".
Bought one a month ago. Buzy with 4 other planes so it must wayt some time before building it. Nise to see an other one ready and flying. Nice job.
Beautiful Love your Builds Inspiring

Such a smooth flight.
Thanks, I just found my answer in one of your great videos.

Great job awesome 👍.

Magnificent!
Wow,,just WOW
like some kind of big-winged soaring seabird!
Wonderful. Why am I thinking albatross as she floats along?
