- 'God Save the Tsar!" was the anthem of the Russian Empire from 1833-1917. Lyrics by Vasily Zhukovsky and music by Alexei Lvov.
Russian America was the parts of North America that the Russian Empire held, which included Alaska, the western shores of Canada, and parts of Washington state, Oregon, Northern California, and Hawaii. The Capital was New Archangle (present day Sikta) in Alaska. Russia held this area from the late 1700s until they sold Alaska to the United States in 1867.
We have a Russian fort in California. We even have places with Russian names in Northern California or Jefferson.

Yep, common misconception is that Russia only had Alaska as part of the North American territories.

Spanish rule was only a formality north of Sonoma, and the Mexican government, when it had nominal ownership of California to Latitude 42 N (which goes through Chicago and near Boston, so that is rather far north) did nothing to settle northern California. (Check the map: San Francisco is at roughly the same latitude as Louisville, Kentucky and Richmond, Virginia).

Of course it was conquest and subjugation, but consider the state of native population of Siberia and native population of the USA. Many of siberian natives are still alive in great numbers, their culture and language are preserved for the most part. And I cannot say the same about American natives.
