I didn't like using the SS pins because it was a pain to pick them out of the dirty bucket water. But, I really needed to clean a lot of brass this past weekend so I ran some brass in the tumbler. While it was running I got a cup of coffee, dreading dumping the dirty water and pins into a bucket. I thought, there has to be a better way to do this! A fine screen instead of the sifting insert would work. I remembered ny new coffe maker came with one of those molded permanent filters with a fine screen. I prefer paper filters so I stored the screen filter. I found the metal screen filter fit the end of the tumbler. The end cap held it in place tight enough to drain the dirty water and rinse the contents several times till it ran clean keeping the pins with the brass. I can even dump the dirty water into a sink or bath tub this way without losing the pins. Everything goes into a rotary separator. A handful of pins stick in the drum but rinsing it with the screen in place gets them out. The coffee filter isn't strong enough to support the weight of the loaded tumbler so I don't set down on the end. I also use 1 gallon paint filter mesh bags to wash and store the SS pins. To dry the brass, my clothes dryer has a drying rack for shoes, etc. that I cover with 5 gallon paint filter bags to keep the brass suspended. 15 to 20 minutes on high heat gets the brass hot and carries away all moisture.
If you don't have a food dehydrator you save a lot of time by placing your wet brass into a small porous laundry bag (ditty bag) with the draw string pulled tight and wrapped with a zip tie. Place in your clothes dryer with other laundry and dry for about 30 min. Not enough heat to hurt the shiny brass finish. I like reloading so much, I think I shoot more to reload more. Great video; wish I had seen it sooner.
Thank you KB32. I've been using a oven at 150 to dry my brass, and have the same result as you were having, darker brass. I bought one of the dryers a few years ago for my wife. It's never been used. It's going to get some use now.
Just for awareness, I'm using my tumbler until for the first time today. I dumped my steel needles in first as you suggested, but once I got it all setup and started it turning, it was leaking. I opened up the end that was leaking and saw some of those stainless needles had made their way underneath the rubber gasket. Granted, I didn't check tightness on the bottom cap before I started pouring stuff in, but had I put the brass in first, I wouldn't have had that issue. Live and learn. Great video though, I've bookmarked it!
This is by far the best way to clean brass. I have a similar setup. I am a jeweler and have Access to many different ways to clean jewelry and I have tried them all to clean my brass. This is the way I clean my brass and it is by far the best way if you want the cleanest looking brass possible. Thanks for the video.
Depriming first will give you impeccable primer pockets. The brass will look like new . The stainless media is awesome on primer pockets. I use a tablespoon of Dawn dish soap, 1/8 cup Lemi Shine. I also use the Cabela's media separator, fill it with water till it comes to half way up the basket. when separating pins from brass I close the lid and rotate basket for a minute or two. then dry as normal. No spots , no pins impeccable brass. I never dried in the food dehydrator I will give that a go. like the video. keep up the great content. reload, shoot, rinse and repeat .
3 years old and still helping new reloaders. My dumbass spent the better part of an hour inverting brass and blasting water from the primer pocket to the case mouth to get the pins out.. Thanks for showing us your process!
Thanks for the vid. Of course, if you live in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, etc. just put your brass outside in the sun. The air is so dry in mountain states that the brass dries fast. I dry jerky in a few hours with nothing more than a window fan and chrome racks.

Kotaboy32,you ROCK my man,I have been wanting one of these bad boy's for a while,been polishing my brass by hand with 0000 steel wool....it suck's and my finger's are killing me...my friend's say they sure do look great though..that and paying great attention to detail on flash hole's and other problem's....loading .223/5.56 for the first time I used AA 2230 powder 23 grain's, Federal Cartridge brass and some Lake City 5.56 NATO ...CCI 450 magnum primer's 55 grain FMJBT bullet's,we shall see how we do..hope I don't blow my face off.....thank you for a cool video on polishing....PEACE!!!...

Yea... so I do have a big ass Dehydrator and have attempted in the past to use it but what happens is, water gets between the primer and the outside facing wall of the flash hole and hangs out and hides... very hard to dry out... been doing my brass in the oven at 200 degrees for 1 hour for YEARS after its been washed. no problems and ive gotten 7+ reloadings doing this method for years now.
Cheaper option for sorting, Dollar Tree kitchen colander to catch the brass. Use a Dollar Tree oil change pan to catch the pins. I don’t like using lemishine or citric acid in the tumble as the longer time in the acid can leach tin from the brass, turn it orange and weaken it. So the pin and soap tumble it not as shinny so I dry, using a food dehydrator as well, dry vibrate with walnut shell media and nu finish . Great for stored brass. I use the lemishine, soap and brass in an ultrasonic cleaner first, rinse, dry then size and decap, and flare (trim, chamfer and debur rifle brass) so after the polish only thing left is reloading.
I just got one for christmas, i really dont care for sparkling clean brass, i just basicly toss em in my vibratory tumbler to knock off any carbon/ powder residue. I anneal my brass as well after every firing, n I like the look of freshly annealed brass. when I first tried this it was with already processed brass, i had problems with the caps leaking and it is loud, also I'm a bit pre emptious about getting my brasswet n having to dry it too. I did just order a food dehydrater so I guess well see howvit works out

@@briansmith5083 No but I do so when I clean my cases I am also cleaning the primer pockets. I use a single stage press to knock them out with a Lee universal depriming die. Mighty Armory has a real nice depriming die.
Good tips-. I use warm water lemi shine & a squirt of soap, I quit using pins cause I hated separating them & also I can tumble more brass at one time- literally like 25 -30 mins is all it takes... Try it one time without the pins .
Do yourself a favor and buy the tumbler with the box. Fill the box with fresh water, so the brass is in the water when tumbling. It is much faster and removes pins almost 100% of the time. Then dump the box onto your filter screen, catching all the pins. Now you can fill the box one more time for a clean rinse. Now I dump that water in a 5-gallon bucket for the next first wash. By the way, hand cranking the tumbler is some how relaxing.
Good vid, I never had problems with water spots though. I think its the lanolin I apply right after they come out of wet tumbling. I use lanolin (lanolin /99% alcohol) as a case lube and noticed it keeps the brass looking 'new' shiny too, so after they come out of wet tumbling they go into a collander shake dry then on a towel. I take a small amount of pure lanolin in my hands and then pick up handfuls of brass to give a light coating while rubbing them in the towel to get excess water off, then let them dry. They come out keeping their 'new' luster look not to mention sizing alot easier. I never noticed water spots and I'm guessing its the lanolin that I was using - for a different reason lol
Outstanding video KB32. The inside of these straight wall cases look really great. I don't reload pistol brass, but I do reload .223 REM and 6.5 CM. Will this method clean the inside of bottle neck case just as good?
I hate washing dishes but I could get to liking that. Did the scotch go in there too lol. Found a less expensive way to to make jerky without buying a dehydrator it may not work for 1000 rds in one shot but cheaper get a standard box fan furnace filters and 2 or 4 bungee cord put the casingins into the notches of the filter put the bungee cords around the stack of filters turn the fan on and walk away
Awesome bro, I have been tumbling brass for years, and they don't look this good. I will try your system with the addition of using Sunshine Stainless Steel media in the event the pins stop working. This setup will be in the garage to avoid the noise.
To sift your media from your brass put a garden plant basket into a bigger bucket filled with water tilt it to 45degree and roll the basket in the water, be careful not to tilt to much you want the brass to stay in the basket. 10 seconds of rolling and done.
Kotaboy, check into the Frankford Arsenal Wet/Dry Media Separator. I think it'll make it even quicker and easier for you. You can dump the entire load from the tumbler into it and in just a few cranks of the handle you'll have removed 98+% of the pins. I basically run the same setup otherwise; Frankford wet tumbler, LSD (lemishine and Dawn) with hot water to clean, food dehydrator to dry.
Kotaboy32 Tactical yeah, you can screw the slotted end into the tumbler and dump then that way, but you'll have a significant number left in either the tumbler body or stuck in the cases themselves. Or that's what happened to me, anyway. I still get a few cases that'll have some pins in them even after spinning in the separator, but it's an insignificant amount compared to when I was trying to do without it.
You did not mention that you should de-prime the brass before tumbling. The primer pocket is also cleaned using your wet tumbling method. That's how I do it. I just purchased Lemi Shine dish washing soap. It worked beautifully. I use a Harbor Freight wet rock tumbler, and it works great at a much lower cost than your tumbler. Where did you buy your separator trays? I want to purchase one. Thanks.
I use Lyman tumbler kinda the same thing , but after it comes out of the tumbler and rinse off my brass and shake it around to get the pins separated I will run the rankford Arsenal Media Transfer Magnet over the brass and the magnet will pick up the brass the brass that has the media still in the brass, pistol brass isn't so bad but rifle brass will hang up in the brass and the magnet will pick that brass even if it has one pin in it, i even run it through a media separator and i still will get some brass that has a pin or 2 in them and the magnet will find them
Just a word of advice garbage disposals don't like those pins. What I did was found a decent size strong magnet that fits into the garbage disposal and I stick it down in there every time I separate the pins so they don't accidentally drop down the drain.
Deciding between this and two others (Lyman and a Red metal one) What is the point of having two caps on the frankford with the built in cap filter/strainers if you are not going to use them? Seems the extra cap is a waste and a leak point. The Lyman has just 1 cap not two.

Diameter of my stainless steel media measures 0.04 inches. The 50 mesh openings are 0.02 inches (I.e. 1 inch /50 openings per inch = .02 inches). Therefore, 50 mesh should catch the ss media, which is twice the diameter as the mesh.

@Moe I I have had 2 people tell me sizes. Both agree on 1/4" for top casing screen. I measured a 9mm casing and tend to agree with the quarter inch top screen. They however disagree on bottom pan media screen size. One said 1/50" screen and the other says 1/100" screen. Since I have no way to measure my media and I am unfamiliar with 1/50" and 1/100" screen. I can't say which to use. My thought would be to use largest possible. I believe it would drain faster and have less tendency to plug with dirt from casings. I am thinking of going with 1/50" as it's larger holes. I can only assume person who told me this has used it with good results. If after opening I don't agree, I guess return it for the 1/100". Original video poster. Has never replied to my inquiries. I need to get one for my suppressor baffles, but I can't believe people use these on brass. A traditional tumbler takes 30 seconds to start, and maybe a minute to separate. No drying, no water.
The sifters are an awesome idea! Gonna have to try the food dehydrator. I keep getting dark brass from the lowest heat in the oven for only a few minutes. Great video.

It may not be a beauty contest as brass just needs to be clean to be reloaded, but I LOVE that gleaming brass when it comes out of the tumbler!

Damn it.... Looks like I need to buy a wet tumbler and dehydrator. It'll be worth it if I can get my brass looking that good.

Try backing off on how much dawn you use, less is actually more and actually makes rinsing so much easier, also doesn’t turn your cases red 👍🏻

When you show us great items you have found to come in handy for the process of cleaning and drying brass, you should post links to the items.
With my ss pins I also have bought the ss shards. I find that my primer hole comes out much better. I almost never clean primer pockets now.

Deciding between this and two others (Lyman and a Red metal one) What is the point of having two caps on the frankford with the built in cap filter/strainers if you are not going to use them? Seems the extra cap is a waste and a leak point. The Lyman has just 1 cap not two.

About the funnel, I put it on top of the tumbler and dump the shells and pins in fast and easily.

What helped you decided to pick 1/50" screen? I see a lot of choices on Amazon.
@@libertydoc boy, I can't remember right now, that was 6 months ago. LOL I don't think It was for pin removal, I chose 1/4" for that.

Diameter of my stainless steel media measures 0.04 inches. The 50 mesh openings are 0.02 inches (I.e. 1 inch /50 openings per inch = .02 inches). Therefore, 50 mesh should catch the ss media, which is twice the diameter as the mesh.

Use large zip ties to weave though the big holes on outside of your dehydrated screen so brass won’t fall thiugh

@Moe I I have had 2 people tell me sizes. Both agree on 1/4" for top casing screen. I measured a 9mm casing and tend to agree with the quarter inch top screen. They however disagree on bottom pan media screen size. One said 1/50" screen and the other says 1/100" screen. Since I have no way to measure my media and I am unfamiliar with 1/50" and 1/100" screen. I can't say which to use. My thought would be to use largest possible. I believe it would drain faster and have less tendency to plug with dirt from casings. I am thinking of going with 1/50" as it's larger holes. I can only assume person who told me this has used it with good results. If after opening I don't agree, I guess return it for the 1/100". Original video poster. Has never replied to my inquiries. What size sifting screen are you using? The screen itself. They come in 1/2 to 1/100th inch.
What is the measurement from see-thru wall to wall? Trying to figure out how long of an item would fit in there.
I need to get one for my suppressor baffles, but I can't believe people use these on brass. A traditional tumbler takes 30 seconds to start, and maybe a minute to separate. No drying, no water.
The sifters are an awesome idea! Gonna have to try the food dehydrator. I keep getting dark brass from the lowest heat in the oven for only a few minutes. Great video.

Actually Frankfort Arsenal has very similar dryer that works fantastic and costs cheaper than food dehydrator.
As long as you keep your oven low (like 100°F) you won't go anywhere near the tempering temperature of the brass.
