I've been playing this sonata for decades, without entirely resolving its technical demands, let alone its immense musical subtleties. It is remarkable how many "new" insights Mr Rose has provided for me in this short masterclass! I feel immensely privileged to have had him communicate so personally and intimately with me, sharing his approach to each aspect of this amazing sonata.
I first learned this sonata when I was thirteen years old and just recently returned to it. It has so much to offer and both rewards and challenges pianists over a lifetime. I very much appreciate Jerome Rose's insights into its subtleties. I am vigorously shaking my head in agreement when he emphasizes how long it takes to properly develop the relaxed rotary movement you need to play the passage in the left hand at 13:45. I struggled with it so much as a teenager, but with age I've managed to accomplish it. Thanks for posting this video.
I find the beginning of the allegro molto section of the first movement very dry without Pedal. I hear you also slightly pedalling despite the staccato in the right hand. Am I hearing this correctly?

Having a solid technical foundation is key, and you need a good teacher for that.

Excellent! Thank you!
Great Pianist. Show performance.
How is Dr. Rose? It has been years since I’ve seen him.
He is still alive and active. He has an active teaching and performing career.
