    Paid 1000 bucks for my first car a Volvo 240. It had 120k miles. Drove it til 230k. Sold it running and still had only done regulat oil, changed the brakes once. Couple other things. Amazing car. 5 speed manual

    A 1966 Volvo P1800s held the record for highest mileage. At the owner's death in 2018, the car had travelled 3.2 million miles.

      Good undercoats too for the Swedish winters.

      People still have morals, but unfortunatley technology/software and electronics ( not mechanical engineering) has infiltrated car design. Volume is high and competition is higher. Obsession with software subscription monetization has gone too far.

      You put good oil in them and keep up with your servicing, you'll have them a long time. And you'll do more for the atmosphere, than by buying ten EV's, with all the costs nobody really wants to talk about.

    Oldest colleague I know had a 91 Toyota Pick Up. Vehicle still running, now driven by his son, other than new paint, a solid vehicle still running the five day work week.

    I miss my 1995 Red Toyota Tercel 2dr with 4 speed manual transmission. That car ran forever and never needed any major repair. The interior fell apart before the engine or transmission. The whole car paint was faded.

      I had an '86 Tercel I bought used - living in Northern PA and I had a 53 mile each way commute to Ithaca, NY. In the dead of winter snow all over and 20 degrees outside, I'd put my toothbrush in my mouth, go out and start the Tercel, go in and finish brushing and come out and that little trucker was blowing heat already! It was a 4 speed manual and she wasn't fast but she never left me stranded and just kept going and going. I still miss that car one of the best I ever had

    I had a 240 then later replaced it a 760 and my final volvo was a 780
    All of them are simply NON DESTRUCTABLE

    Colleague got 424,000 out of his 740. He only sold it due to the rust. Has never had a car he’s liked like that one since.

    I’m still driving 2003 Ford Explorer.
    It’s running like a clock, although it’s done only 150K miles so far.
    Just change oil and filters regularly and the usual upkeep procedures like plugs and stuff.

      @@showdogmissy no transmission, deferential problems …but the crack is there and I think I should’ve greased the lock’s tongue..it’s a very dependable car with minimal running cost

    Lucky the heater core isn't dead. It is literally BURIED in the dash. My family had a 760 wagon and the heater was gone. We lived in Salt Lake City. SLC has FOUR SEASONS. 🥶

    I just bought a 1990 volvo 240 wagon as a project car for $3k, replaced the PCV system and cleaned up the ends of some of the vacuum lines so far. Might have to look into replacing the o2 sensor and doing a trans fluid flush but she still runs fine after 250k miles. the B230 engines are really great slant 4s, very simple, beefy to all hell, and easy to work on. would like to take it on a road trip one day once I've returned it to its former glory.

      Scotty would advise against doing a "trans fluid flush" on such a older car. He has made that point several times.
      I have 1989 Volvo with the same engine and trans. I only drained out some trans fluid but did NOT do a flush...
      You'd better listen to Scotty or risk trouble and even damage

    I sold Volvos in the 1970's. 4 cylinder SRI (sun roof overdrive) my friends were very impressed with the performance. Shocked to say the least.

    I have a 2004 Mountaineer with a V8 and a 2008 Mountaineer with a V6. the V8 gets a lot better gas millage because of the vehicle weights.

    I have got a volvo 91 740 turbo gem of a car theb a vlack 940 turbo another gem restored and sold for triple. Now picked up a 97 960 straight six wagon i cant get myself to sale is a solid car when you sit you feel you are in a tank. I bought my wife a mercedes e320 2002 those feel similar very tank like.

    My daily drive is a 25yr old Volvo V70 2.4t 😊 Ford purchased Volvo in 2000 and that’s when the rot started to set in. Volvo announced it would no longer supply estates/station wagons into the UK but they have already reversed the decision. The UK police are in the process of swapping out their motorway/highway BMW’s for Volvo’s after a officer lost his life in a car fire.

    The Buicks the Oldsmobiles the Ford station wagons a lot of those cars when I was a kid they're very popular they're very safe and they're very powerful, I'm glad to see Scotty still doing reviews on these older square bodies.

    My late 80's model looked exactly like this one. Best car I ever owned. Heavy four cylinder with the best combo of luxury and sporty handling ever. Surprisingly strong 4 cyl.. I was second owner, started with 90k, sold at 210k and third owners drove it for another twenty years.

    I have a 1990 Volvo 240, easy to work on and very reliable. 2002 Toyota Tacoma, rock solid. 2005 Impala ex police vehicle with the 3800, legendary engine. 2010 Honda Fit, 5 speed, runs like a top.

      3.8 liter V6. They were good when they were carbureted (late 70s early eighties) and that continued clear up into the fuel injected 2000s. I think the 3.8 l V6 is the greatest engine GM ever made as far as reliability and longevity. I had a few automobiles that had that engine. ('80 Bonneville, '85 Buick, 98 Chevy Lumina)

    Still driving my 2010 focus. Bought for 2400 bucks with 130k. Now with 356k and no major failures. Shifts great and uses no oil. 36 mpg highway. Ice cold air.

      I am glad this has worked out for you because I once had a Focus and it was the worst car I have ever owned (and I once owned a Dodge Colt). Everything went wrong that car.

      @@dexterwestin3747guess it depends on the year and maintenance. I’ve change the whole suspension over the 6 years I’ve had it, tranny fluid changed every 50k ( drain and fill) oil every 5-7k miles depending on how much highway driving I did. Did vacuum down the ac and out a factory charge back in. Oh, also had the radiator plastic crack. 94 bucks for a new radiator. Just maintenance items to me. This thing goes from Maryland to Tennessee every year lol.

    When I started driving my dad had an 85 740 Turbo. Was a fun rwd car and in 85 Volvo did advertisements bragging it was faster than bmw and Porsche. Car was a tank.

    Had an 02 Exploder myself. Had over 249K miles on the engine when it was totaled out. Never burned a drop of oil. Transmission had to be rebuilt at 120K.

    My first car, a Volvo, is the reason I drive Toyotas exclusively now lol. It was close to the year featured in this video but not a wagon. It was a piece of junk

    I drove for sometime a Toyota just like that one…except was almost brand new..friend of mine owned one….very super efficient and affordable pickup truck to move stuff around…but back then,trucks were affordable and super simple…
    Now they make trucks for entertainment and not for work.

    I had a 1985 760 Turbo with an M46 that made it 390,000 miles before a rod decided it didn`t like the engine anymore. The biggest repair was a clutch before it died. Getting hard to find them nowadays.

    I have a 1971 Chevy pick up truck with original clutch
    Clutch’s don’t wear out if you know how to drive one and don’t ride the clutch

    I've owned various Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile vehicles in the past ~30 years and they've all had some issues. The least problematic for me were definitely Toyota, Honda and Nissan. Worst was Ford - never again.

    My dad had this car new back in 1990. He would have kept it past the lease but mom had a pretty major accident in it requiring tons of work. The car is a tank. Mom was perfect after the accident. My dad knew the. Ar was a tank and special ordered it with a manual transmission. He always said this car should be a stick. Miss dad and the Volvo.

    Volvo made some of the older 240 in Canada too. We used to see them displaying "made in Canada" on a sticker in their backglass.

    I used to own a 1986 Toyota Hilux ute in Australia with over 400,000km.
    Moved to the Philippines in 2014.
    Philippines is LHD so I sold it to a friend who still has it.

    My Ford Focus has 295k miles and I had the transmission and clutch replaced at 241k miles and it cost about $1500

    Yes scotty, those volvos don't use obd2, I believe they use a obd1. The port/adapter should be connected somewhere on the battery terminal erea like the late 80s-early 90s Toyota's

    Perfect timing my 2001 grandmarquis is sputtering and dying every 2 seconds. Then all the sudden its fine at driving 85mph...but anything lowers than 30 it wants to die. Looking for a cheap car for work. Looking for anything!

    I've got a 2007 Ford Focus with over 200k. Runs great. We bought it to drive one winter. Price was $500. That was 5 years ago. It runs so good, we've kept it. Turned down $3500 for it..😂😂😂

    Problem is with newer technology cars are getting faster less reliable more maintenance and customers want the faster cars to cut u off and speed so older cars are gold in many ways.

    Those older RWD Explorers weren't bad at all. I would prefer one with the 4.6 myself. The 4.0 V-6 wasn't a bad engine but overall the 4.6 was a little better. I think I'll just leave the FWD Explorer with its engine destroying water pump alone.

    Hi Scotty!~ Another great informative video. Curious, what year this Volvo 240 Station Wagon in the video is and see it has California plates on it. Did the person find/buy it in California? If so, that would be super rare unless it was in a smaller town or it was a car that someone took very good care of, like a Grama and Grandpa vehicle driven to the store and back. Love these old Volvo wagons and would love to find one in good condition like that one in the video. For $1500, that is still a steal. Just Googled it in the LA area and several come up but- in the over $8,000 range on various car related websites.
