I really liked this interview and the perspectives shared! I don't live in Singapore but I do live in a similarly high cost of living place. Here, money genuinely does buy me happiness: I can buy classes (education), good quality groceries, healthcare, etc. But I am mindful of how I value money and the lengths to which I go to attain it. My perspective might be different if I lived in a place where these things were more accessible at a lower cost and I think it's the same for Singaporeans. Would be interested in seeing more street interviews if you can make them!

I have no idea if the people in the video are a representative example of people in Singapore, but it does look like everyone you bumped into was not just well educated but very aware of the world they live in. The best gift that you can give your kids is to bring them up in this kind of environment, so they will have good options when they grow up.

i learned from my school days that if I don't like where i am i should make the necessary changes. if I don't like my current job, i should just switch to another job while im young. now i work a job that i actually like in a company that has a very good culture. I'm currently learning as much as i can here before i finally am ready to move on to another career move bcs ppl in my company tend to leave after a few years to get better salary/pursue their own passions.
for young people, if you don't like where you currently are, just make the change or you'll look back 5 years later thinking that you've wasted a lot of time not being content.

Love the video Jean! I am too from fintech industry and everyone is praising how good it is. It doesn't come with work life balance. It's rewarding but I do not think it's balance in any other way of living. I prefer happiness then anything else. I have to make steps to fulfill what I want when nobody will help you to. Most of all, I want to cherish life not wishing to be corporate rat for life. Your video inspired me to do something I wanted. Jean, I haven't really commented on a video of yours before about the content but I found this one intriguing. I'm not sure if you were expecting anything but I was imagining the percentage of those with job dissatisfaction would've been far higher. F I R E to me would seem to be the ultimate aspiration for all, but if everyone you've interviewed is being honest, it seems my perception is askew. Hope to chance-meet you and Vitaly in January... to listen and learn... and dissolve some mental obstacles that you two have clearly overcome. Have an awesome day. Cheers, Ric.

We must learn to be appreciative and thankful for what god has given to us. Ones dignity isn’t based on how much he or she earns. We have to stop comparing with others if not we won’t be happy and life would not be meaningful. Try to appreciate the little things in life and do not take things for granted. A poor man and a rich man shares the same similarity in which they both don’t find the joy in living because one find it hard to survive and the other find it too easy to survive because he can afford anything.

I think in SG, you have to figure out what makes you happy at the end of the day. I've seen some people work like they are married to the company, divorced but earning lots of money. They are always chasing for the luxury things in life and it's never enough. At the end of the day, I wonder when they will realise that when they retire, they mean nothing to the companies they work their butts off for, and the money they've accumulated can't buy true happiness.

My current job is rather repetitive, doesn't pay that well and I don't really enjoy it. I also live with my parents, but I get the impression that they disapprove of my delivering food because they think that it's too dangerous for me. I'm just doing Grab just to put a bit more cash in my pocket, to work toward my financial independence. I know that earning money by this avenue may be slow, but it will all add up in the end. Just do our part as their kid. Like it or not, you just do it. I give you moral support for your will to sacrifice your weekend to do something you feel useful. Just remember this, whenever you step out of your house, you either gonna spend money or to earn money. So hope this goes as your motivation to go for it, work hard but at the same time be safe be humble be amiable as society sometime may not be fond to us. I believe you will feel accomplish one day when you save enough money to bring your family for good meal treat or a vacation. Let your parent feel proud and they will support you later on. Do make some friends in the field that may keep you afloat. Gambateh bro!

Unsolicited advice. Once you experience corporate life outside Singapore in better balanced places e.g. Sweden, Germany, France, Denmark, etc., You will quickly realise that it's not about corporate life but the people and culture. Either try in other countries or find a company with an international background, where people do not create unnecessary work life balance issues.

If you are from HR or an employer, please see this.
It is ridiculous of companies and employers to think that they are doing employees a favour by employing them. The workers are not getting the salary for free, they uses their time and effort to earn that money, and companies cannot survive with just talking CEOs, so please know that nobody owes the company anything.
And by the way, please Raise salary for employees especially those at the bottom levels, things are very expensive nowadays. Always ask yourself are you willing to take that pay yourself, before you have the heart to offer it to others.
Employers, better do a lot of good Karma. Make workers suffer and you will also suffer in your own life one way or another.

Def send out that CV asap and start looking for options out there. Or maybe geoarbitrage it a bit if ure currently in a higher cost of living place - u can maybe afford to take time off n rebuild your health and mind here in Asia cos it’s much cheaper to live here generally

@@JeanVoronkova That is a very good idea but too scary for many people. Plus not everyone is prepared to or can move somewhere else. Have you got any specific advice on how to go about it? I think the main issue is having the courage to take a leap and I really admire you for that!

$3.5k a month for young adults in Singapore is only suffice to pay off debts and keep themselves alive. $4k you’ll be able to squeeze some savings. $5k you’ll be able to make plans for family travelling. $6k plan for a car. $7k comfortably plan for kids. $8k plan for a car. $9k have retirement plans.
How many peasants like myself could really do that in Singapore? I’m at the 4-5 range…..
