"hindus, muslims, sikhs, etc of the subcontinent are indian by ethnicity" the term "indian" is just plain broad and the subcontinent is populated by so many ethnic groups, with some exclusive to either india or pakistan mostly, for example punjabis, sindhis, baloch, pashtuns, and mohajirs are exclusive to pakistan instead of india while indian ethnic groups such as tamils, marathas, kannadigas, malayalis, and assamese are exclusive to india. overall these ethnic groups give both pakistan and india THEIR OWN IDENTITY besides the two main differences of religion, so saying all of them are "indian by ethnicity" is just plain ignorant
