Agreed. Not necessarily the best for "survival" applications but a good alternative for those looking to supplement power for an emergency... Or if you like to go hiking and instead of soaking up mother nature, you blast an iPod all day long and need a way to recharge it with your GPS.
Just purchased this for $50 Sherpa 50 no panels. I love goal zero. Hope this works well, I have had issues when NOT purchased directly from goal zero. Good video thanks for the review.
Check amazon. They have several different models with different size panels. I've found them all around the $250 - $400 price points on different sites
Imagine my surprise I want to buy buy this product so i wanted to c what my fellow you tubers hv to say about it and there is Richard. I watch Rated RR keep up the good work.
So.. value wise its still better to get the cup recharger, and just use the sherpa battery for the energy storage, or.. as I did, get the smaller aa and aaa battery charger, and use that for usb power. Solar is too slow, and too stationary. I want power on demand, and their prices are outrageous for most of their gear in comparison. Check it out, theepicenter dot come and see the prices on the REAL energy on demand method of TEG modules with the Seebeck effect of thermoelectric. Thats smart.
Hey Ryan, nice review I liked that you had all your thoughts on the product however you just kept using really vague terms that didn't actually tell me anything. You didn't actually say what the weight was or compare it to a common houshold item so I couldn't get an idea of how much it weighed. Same thing for your other review categories except charging, when you said it charged the battery to 50% in 2.5 hours, but how big is the battery? What will it comfortably power? You get my point.
50 bmg isn't all that expensive when you handle your own ammo. It's gone down in price significantly over the last year. Still not at the .22 price point but a few magazines here and there won't break the bank.
I bought a whole sat with Sherpa 50, solar panel, inverter and cables at Costco with a heck of a discount. I use it to power my portable Elecraft Kx3, 10 Watt HF HAM radio transceiver. It runs all day long, powrred by Sherpa 50. I live Goal Zero products.
I've recently started looking into solar kits so that I have a source of power for just my phone and maybe a digital camera/gopro. I will be doing the Appalachian Trail come 2016, which leaves me a good bit of research time. Would this be suitable?
If you're not going to take a laptop with you I'd say don't buy the kit just buy the parts piecemeal; you could save about $50 or bump the pv panel up to 20 watts for approximately the same price
Can we get specifics in the future? You talk about weight without mentioning how much it weighs. Same issue with cost. I like this show and will keep watching, but I would appreciate some quantifiable facts.
woo really kinda sucks, but been like free i guest its ok, plus this sherpa is for smlla devices and tablets and laptops, probably like 40% the energy for a laptop but depending what are you using those 40%, i mean its ok not to good not to bad, enough but some people want like to run a tv and they want 1 hour full charge, plus you can give back the thing if you dont like it just like that.
You left off the price on an otherwise good review. Granted prices vary and change over time, but you can address that with a disclaimer. One of the reasons people watch is because you do the testing research for them - that should at least include the specific CONS that you find - in this case the price. Sure- anyone can go do their own digging around on the web - and would if they were seriously interested after watching - but if you are going to review- give a FULL review.
Are you sure the charging started at zero and then charged to 50%. My experience with solar charging on the solar and power gorilla by powertraveller is that you need at least a 50% charge of the batterij to keep a powercharge going. So 50-80% is possible, not 0-50%. By the way all solar charging of batteries will only charge to 80%, never 100%, it is part of the solar efficiency.
This is crazy expensive, you can easily get a 20W portable panel for $60 on Amazon that is essentially the same thing, and you can get the RavPower Extreme 23000 mAh for $100, a total of $160. This kit is probably like $400 or something ridiculous Their products are offensively overpriced.
What a useless review. Generalizations, no details, didn't explain what the pieces are, or what they do. No weight, no price. Come on guys, put some effort into it. At $399 and 3 pounds I think I would have included that information.
I can understand taking this just in case an electronic dies and you're in an actual survival situation (too much weight either way) or if you're on a road trip or something, but if you're trying to get into the wild and away from the world, why the hell would you take an electronic device and actually use it so much that you have to recharge it?
Good one!!

$500....kinda defeats the purpose of the whole outdoors experience.
There is an Facebook Site from thetechfeed :)) facebook slash /TheTechFeed1
And you aint give a price, why is that?
LOL! It's a necessary evil. Getting me to spend money outside of my videos is rather difficult :)
I got these 2 for free from reliant power company because of my new house is chose them for my power and they gave me these for free
Sometimes quality is cheap
omg where else dude, a webpage sound familiar to you?

What's with the cheesy stop motion shots? Irritating to watch.
What your cheap.. YOU SHOOT EXPENSIVE ELECTRONICS EVERY WEEK!!!!!!
Way to make a video without providing any real facts!
agree in the away from the world but some people are way to stupid.
