Just wanted to chime in on the Scope (It's a POSP not PSOP ;-) ). If you are wondering why it has a 1,5m indicator, of course it is not because people are so small around here in Europe :D. Belarus produced this scope for military purpose initially, with a 1,7m and 1m indicator (5'7 and 3'3) for the average standing person and crouched person. After the soviet union broke apart, they needed to acquire a different market in order to survive, so they produced their scopes for hunting purposes with a 1,5m and 0,5m indicator (4'11 and 1'8) for the average height of european deer standing and lying. So in this case it appears to be one of the scopes with the hunting reticle :) Greetings from Europe!
Excellent explanation, Vihta. I was assuming the lower 0.5 indicator was for a person partially hidden behind something like a trench perhaps. Thank you for the information.
Noop, for an human target 1.5 m use shoulders height for range finding, the head is not used here... Great vid and great gun by the way hope this help!
I used PSL two tours in A'stan, I could tell that's a very accurate rifle. Also , PSL is just a tool, accuracy depends on the shooter. Thanks for video, greetings from Romania! God Bless!
Love how this video shows practical accuracy of the DMR platform and what it's intended use and performance is. It wasn't made to be a sub MoA R700 in 300win magnum, It's meant to fill the gap between the AK's and the DSHK's
This does a shit job showing practical accuracy. 9hole reviews does a better job showing it by walking rounds from 150 to 800 yards with both the Dragnov and the psl I believe. Frankly. Iraq vet just did a poor job shooting the rifle in the bid period. These rifles are definetly 1moa capable and many people even claim sub moa accuracy with more modern mil spec loads instead of older mil surp ammo.
This video remember about my army service 20 years ago. Good memories. I was the smalest un the peloton about 5'8 so under middle range 5'10 inch of rumanians. All i can say is that i put hundred rounds in a 400 yards plate with almost 100% consistancy. I dont say is better firearm then other but You know im not impartially în this case. Sorry for that. Good work Iraqveteran8888 keep going on.
Excuse me mister, I do not wish to sound ignorant but...isn't 400 yards a bit, "low score" for this gun and caliber ? 400 yards is do-able with 5.56mm caliber, and without a scope.
The POSP 8X is actually more intended for civilian application, namely hunting. The military optics, the rangefinder is set up for 1.7M tall targets, which is the average height of an adult man. 1.5M is meant for game, like deers or elks. The romanian military normally use an LPS scope (4X power) made locally by IOR Valdada, which is pretty much an exact copy of the russian PSO-1, the same used on the Dragunov SVD.
Is it just me who is amazed at that last few shots at the 8inch gong? I've never fired a gun so it might just be inexperience but military grade Bulgarian ammo out of a DMR from 600m and hitting the 8inch gong more than once blows my mind!

@@jamesmorris1238 yet there’s countless people acting like Chad and Eric can’t shoot, I guarantee you if they were the ones shooting they wouldn’t hit shit
Let me just say that I used similar rifle many years ago when I served in one of European Armies. True POSP or PSO-1 has range-finding reticle marked 1.7m (5 feet 10 inches). I happened to own one of them here in USA. At some point in time USA decided that having reticle to measure human targets was not "hunting" scope. POSP changed grading to 1.5m which represents front shoulder height of typical deer in North America. Than they started sending "hunting" scopes to USA again. It is not shoulder it is not short people. I have VEPR in 23.2inch barrel with this scope but with 1.7m reticle.
@Aaron Neville You are right, I was watching the same thing after I saw how many he missed in a row. And after noticing this, I am wondering if he's able to shoot at 200 m (219 yards) and hit without a scope.
The thing i like the most about this video is the ''crack'' you get to experience (because of the downrange camera) it makes it very realistic as to what it would sound like to be getting shot at. Its amazing how you get to see the difference in noise from where Eric is at on the table to where the bullet is hitting. Am i the only one that thinks that is just too neat?? lol
I think that Eric always has a hard time because he slaps the trigger and in that tiny amount of time, the rifle moves ever so slightly. Whereas Chad slowly brings the trigger to the breaking point, keeping the rifle on target.
First time I heard someone describe pulling the trigger like that I was like wtf! And had to do a double take and ppl knowing and described what they do still do it ! So stupid no wander they complain about any trigger at all theyd need a light curtain trigger and still have problems!
That’s a gorgeous rifle. I’v always loved the way this are set up, I wouldn’t mind seeing a company reviving them or something like the dragunov! Great video gentlemen!
I have a similar PSL that is far, far more accurate than I initially expected it to be. With good ammo it will reliably go sub-MOA for 3-shot groups out to 400 yards and generally under 1.5 MOA for 5-shot groups...provided I don't let it get too hot. That starts to open up the groups a bit. The only problem I have with it are the magazines. It came with four, three 10rd mags and a 5 rounder. Of those four only two of them work reliably, and I've not been able to get the 5rd mag to work at all. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Open the feed lips a bit in the front and the front lug needs to hold the mag as high as possible as the front mag lip is a feed ramp and u can slightly bevel it. U may need to file and mig weld more materials to the front lug. I have 11 surplus mags all individually # and everyone is now 100% reliable height and angle of mag is paramount. Also u can slightly bevel the barrel opening this is normal to do despite many ppls concern. Many times the sharp projectiles points hit it and grab and this also mars the projectiles and causes accuracy problems. I believe the ppl that say theirs is not accurate have this problem it hard to shoot straight if u put a big gouge in your bullets. Good luck I love the psl
Liger is right. If someone enters your house and you shoot them with a hunting rifle, you go to prison. Giving guns to civilians without background check isn't the solution, but imagine the shit a gun enthusiast or someone that simply wants to defend themselves lives in. Gun laws SUCK here.
Stopping guns from ending up on the black market still depends on having reliable authorities, e.g. a psych test won't mean shit if it's done by incompetent people. Ultimately most crime here doesn't involve guns, which is good but might change for the bad if guns, particularly pistols, are deregulated and filter into the black market. The clans, well, if you have trouble with them, you're probably screwed regardless of what guns you have, you're not facing an individual, it's an entire organization. Later, depending on how corruption and violent crime rates fluctuate, I'd be in favor of further relaxing gun laws.
Another thing to consider. This is a really thin walled barrel. Once it heats up, starts getting really erratic. It was never intended to be a sniper grade weapon, for repeated rounds at that range, especially with Soviet or satellite ammo. Every round you shot, was perfectly acceptable for suppressing fire at that distance. If you hit point of aim 2 out of 10, had the desired effect, as a DMW.
Wars in Middle East and Ukraine...I was watching a Ukraine war vid were they blow up a ammunition factory turns out thats where Red Army Standard 5.45 was made now my poor Bulgarian goes hungry.
i love my Romanian PSL thank you for the video it let me know my rifle's limit. i paid $850 total transfer fees, taxes and cost of rifle this was maybe 10 years ago
What a coincidence (or did you guys plan this?). Ian, over at Forgotten Weapons, just put a video out today identifying that rifle by the "X" on the magazine, vs. the three he found at the auction. He just spoke about it (I just watched it about an hour ago), and now I'm seeing that 'X' magazine on the Romanian version.
It would be cool to make a video of a gun aiming at the same spot at 600 Yards, and feeding it different ammo. That will show why the ammo can make a difference in precision.
They need to do that. I want to see someone trying to make match ammo out of surplus ammo. I've heard if people doing that. I think this gun would do so much better with match ammo.
PSL was my favorite weapon while I served in the RO Army. The standard scope height mark was 1.7m, the average height of a human. No idea why is 1.5m or 0,5m on this scope, this is not the RO scope I saw is made in Belarus, but I think they are about the same height. I suppose is for different stands. I am 1.91 m
there was a heavy barreled vepr in 54r, but it was raaaare. i think it was a 28 inch model. would have loved that heavy barrel on a 20 inch. that and some 7n1 ammo would def. be a 1moa gun.
I remember some Russian engineers saying that 7.62x54r is a very naturally stable and consistent round when put together with a modicum of quality. Something about the shape and 174ish grain charge. They made a few new bolt guns for the round, supposed to be reaaally darn good shooters.
I’ve pulled and checked these steel case bullets for consistency the powder grains will vary up to .7 gr and the projectiles will vary 1.5 grains and u may have a few extreme outliers and some will be much worse. So ya u gotta judge a rifle by its ammo
here's an old sighter's tip. for angle from center target, imagine a clockface, and call the time. i.e. if you go right and level with target center, call it 3 o'clock. for distance from target center, call it in feet, yards, or meters. so then you don't have to fall over trying find the right words. just 3 o'clock, 3 meter. 8.30, 2.5 feet
They're both great guns. I had a PSL years ago and traded it away thinking i could just buy another later. Then all the gun ban bullshit happened and they tripled in price. 😢
Show Idea... "Ammo makes the difference". Choose a mil-surplus cartridge rifle combo. Pick a range that best showcases Ammo choice. Shoot groups of the following Mil-surplus. Factory equivalent of military standard. Factory hunting round. Factory match round Hand-load hunting round Hand-load match round.
It's a combination of both. That silvertip shoots like shit out of mine also but gets some good 7n1 and it helps. Once you get the barrel heated up though you will start to see some stringing.
Since I reload, I've had this idea of taking some milsurp ammo, pulling the bullets and powder, sorting the bullets by weight (in case of drastic discrepancies), and then loading the into new brass with equal amounts of powder. Seems like that would take care of the sporadic nature of milsurp 54r ammo.
Andy Bateman I just picked mine up yesterday, so haven't been to the range yet, but first impression: I like mine. Guess it depends on your expectations. it's not high speed/low drag. think "pair of jeans" more than "speedo." typical Savage quality, (and I own several different Savage rifles, so for me, that's a compliment.) There are cheaper and there are "better," but I don't think at the typical retail price point, you're going to find as much bang for the buck. the MSRP is probably slightly high, but while I was shopping they're actually selling for much less. (I got lucky and got an absolutely smoking deal, which is a big part of why I didn't wait to try someone else's.) Go do a side-by-side at your local shop. look at $830-$880 rifles and compare. that's about what most places are selling them for. If you want a competition gun, you're likely better off building, or if that's not your thing, having a reputable builder make you one. if you need a knock-around do-it-all, I think you're going to be happy with it. Just make sure you shop. DON'T PAY RETAIL! I'll head to the range in the next week to dial it in and if I remember, I'll let you know if I run into any unforseen issues, but this is a Savage. I doubt it's going to disappoint. They never do.
TheApana I don't trust Yeager. I do trust nutnfancy though and mrgunsngear said some kind things about his on Facebook. I never put my complete trust into any youtubers but it is Savage though.
Why do you not trust Yeager? Because he says mean things? I think he's a good resource to get information from considering he runs a hardcore gunfighting school. If he likes an AR, one can assume that it may be a tough and reliable tool to trust your life with.
Could you do a video on the MAG-7 you had on the wall in your videos? Also it really bugs me that we would have to go all the way to america to shoot a gun from our country. :D
I've never had much luck with PSL's in the consistent accuracy department, regardless.of the ammunition used. Now the Veper Hunter in x54R is a very different story. I did make a killing off selling the $450.00 PSL's for $1600.00 each after the last self induced panic.
You guys either do an insane amount of prep work, or you know an insane amount about military firearms. Eric was ripping off the little details about the scope like they were on the top of his head... Impressive guys!
I love mine ! I upgraded the optics from the 4x issue LPS scope to a POSP 6x. It fills my needs.I give it a pretty consistent diet of PPU 150 gr. Soft points.
@@Noah-rc3ip I don't shoot Milsurp. All the milsurp out there is LMG ammunition that has a built in cone of fire, which is ideal for a MG, but the worse choice possible for a DMR. The PPU SP are a far more consistent ammunition in performance. I am getting about 1.5-2 MOA out of it. depending on how bad my 50+ year old eyes are doing at the time of shooting. I haven't had my PSL out in about two years. I have been mainly been working with it's Serbian Cousins...
@@winkleried I appreciate the reply, I know your comment was 2 years ago haha. I have a psl and a 27" bbl vepr i need to tune in. For the vepr especially I need to find some good match grade stuff. Do you still stick by the posp optics?
@@Noah-rc3ip Another difference between now and then is that KNS piston has been a major game changer for the PSL. I don't have one in mine due to the 150 gr PPU SP does what I ask of it. If I want to shoot a heaver ballet I will break out the PSL's Serbian Cousin. Also The POSP will do most of what you ask of it. I prefer a higher modification and have discovered that the 6X POSP scopes are in that sweet spot of performance to weight and size.
I've heard the idea behind that range finding reticle isn't that they're shorter over there, but that the height is based off the shoulder to feet since heads can be hard to see at range.
After waiting a few years, centerfire systems got some parts kits in for $599, and I finally got one! Those 2 cases I got years ago can finally be put to use!
Nykolas Griffith i know it's not but just like if a person sees a ak whether it's a akm or a n pap ak people just classify it as a ak 47 but whether this is a psl or something else i classify this as a Dragunov
SVD Dragunov is Russian-produced. Eric mentioned that the PSL is manufactured in Romania. Plus the PSL and Dragunov have very distinct different forends. The PSL has more of an AK-style forend, and the Dragunov has a 2 piece vertically split forend.
I picked up a PSL 8 years ago. Fun seeing the struggle with surp Ammo 'n accuracy. I've tryed shooting mine at out to 700 yds. To much dissatisfaction. I've written mine off as a 500yd effective accuracy rifle. Ran it suppressed for a while that's a hoot.
My dad during the 80's was a the DM in his platoon, obviously used the PSL he said that the effective combat range was about 1600 meters, all the marksmen were trained to fire at that range, but in the context of the squad work they never expected to fire any further than about 800 meters, primary job for them was cover fire for the squad
600 yds with old surplus ammo and a PSL. That's some good shooting. Imagine some match grade ammo would make a world of difference. Looking forward to that.
I hope a video like this comes out for the Hakim sometime soon! I bought my Hakim right before the Ljungman video came out and since the "future" video for the Hakim was mentioned in a couple videos I've been waiting ever so eagerly! Please let that come out in the next few weeks!!
barrel whip is notorious in this rifle when it heats up. my PSL was shortened and mod'd by Rifle Dynamics, 18" barrel and has really made a difference.
its interesting to see how it strings shots left as the barrel heats up, my PSL does the same thing. ive taken it out to 600 yards and had about the same accuracy.
Automatic Weapons of Ohio makes the Yugoslav M76 in .308/7.62 Nato and 7.92 Mauser for a very reasonable price and I just love listening to her voice, which sounds like Reba on Tremors. And the best thing is that you can get more consistently accurate surplus ammo for them
Listen, Cugir is making this rifle from the 70s, and it looks better than it shoots. Is not bad, but is by no means a rifle to desperately look after. You Americans did run into it in Iraq and now when you can have it is like : God, this is THE RIFLE DUDE! Get real! I did fire it during the service, I prefer a Nagant any time, and even that rifle is not much.
the height in the rangefinder is supposed to be something like 1,70 meters or 1,75 meters in the original military scopes, the ones that have 1,5 meters on the rangefinder is for the height of a deer or other kinds of game if I'm not mistaken, not for humans.
if you are should a barrel slow motion real flick when you shoot when the Heats up it moves around try hand-load 180 grain triple-shock long-range Magnum primer
Just wanted to chime in on the Scope (It's a POSP not PSOP ;-) ). If you are wondering why it has a 1,5m indicator, of course it is not because people are so small around here in Europe :D. You can find Yugo sniper ammo in 54r 180gr. I bought 1,000 for 36cents a round.
i love my Romanian PSL thank you for the video it let me know my rifle's limit. i paid $850 total transfer fees, taxes and cost of rifle this was maybe 10 years ago
Best gun channel on RUclips....HANDS DOWN!
I am 1.91 m
thin barrel heats up and starts opening up groups
Deej S Pretty sure heat may help it travel more quickly and more easily...don't know.
Deej S not really unless the barrel is drooping lol. Having it warmed up keeps constant barrel harmonics
its well known that cold barrels are more accurate, thats why nobody warms up their gun before a competition
True, and non-free floats are even worse when it comes to hot barrels.
lol everybody heats their gun up before competition
Nice Teamwork, guys! Keep going...
That crack sound is terrifying even through a youtube video !
This weapon is Romanian, and has one of the best sniper rifles in the world
I had a PSL and it did not do well when the barrel heated up lots of stringing.
there was a heavy barreled vepr in 54r, but it was raaaare. i think it was a 28 inch model. would have loved that heavy barrel on a 20 inch. that and some 7n1 ammo would def. be a 1moa gun.
why did you fired so fast then?
I remember some Russian engineers saying that 7.62x54r is a very naturally stable and consistent round when put together with a modicum of quality. Something about the shape and 174ish grain charge.
They made a few new bolt guns for the round, supposed to be reaaally darn good shooters.
Where did you work with Russia engineers?
Man... Always lusted after the PSL. Just a really interesting, gorgeous, and also capable gun.
Just save up for a Vepr in x54r.
I’ve pulled and checked these steel case bullets for consistency the powder grains will vary up to .7 gr and the projectiles will vary 1.5 grains and u may have a few extreme outliers and some will be much worse. So ya u gotta judge a rifle by its ammo
This is the same results I get with this ammo .... revisit this rifle with better ammo!!!
Awesome guy's!
When the second hit dinged I couldn’t help but giggle, great shooting
I think it'd be cool if you guys could do some hunting rifles at 600yrds 243, 270 ect.
Rucker FC4W .270 does real good . great round should be more popular.
O Conner did lots of hunting with the .270 popularizing in the late 1900's. The ballistic trajectory frankly is relative to the 30.06 by all means.
here's an old sighter's tip.
for angle from center target, imagine a clockface, and call the time. i.e. if you go right and level with target center, call it 3 o'clock.
for distance from target center, call it in feet, yards, or meters.
so then you don't have to fall over trying find the right words. just
3 o'clock, 3 meter.
8.30, 2.5 feet
Brilliant timing! So soon after Forgotten Weapons did the SVDs. :)
have you guys ever considered shooting a big block of ballistics gel as a part of these videos? I think that would be pretty cool
i just watched Forgotten weapons video on the dragunov and now this
orion gaming Well this isn't a dragunov. The PSL is literally a large frame AK that fires 7.62x54r.
Joe Spano I know but still
They're both great guns. I had a PSL years ago and traded it away thinking i could just buy another later. Then all the gun ban bullshit happened and they tripled in price. 😢
Joe Spano man that sucks sorry dude
orion gaming It's all good i had my time with it and it was wonderful. I've gone through a few guns and cars i regret letting go but it is what it is.
The good news is that there will be more of these on the market one day. Romania still uses them. Same with the Romanian "G" AK variant.
That was AWESOME! How about the VEPR 54r AK at 600 yards?
awesome rifle
they are essentially the same, unless one of them is chrome lined then there will be basically no difference.
vepraksoldat surprise seeing you here (not.) next purchase will almost certainly be a VEPR
I would love to see a PSL with modern furniture and a modern scope with top shelf ammo. I bet it would be so smooth.
proud to be Romanian!
ok gypsy
Kaziklu Bey racist idiot
Show Idea...
"Ammo makes the difference".
Choose a mil-surplus cartridge rifle combo.
Pick a range that best showcases Ammo choice.
Shoot groups of the following
Mil-surplus.
Factory equivalent of military standard.
Factory hunting round.
Factory match round
Hand-load hunting round
Hand-load match round.
man I need to take mine out for a run too.....
Do it!!!!
Mrgunsngear Channel still love to buy one but that 54r ammo is not accurate
iluvmym4 is not the caliber or the ammo,he is bad shooter, that's all!!!
It's a combination of both. That silvertip shoots like shit out of mine also but gets some good 7n1 and it helps. Once you get the barrel heated up though you will start to see some stringing.
Good luck in finding 7N1 !
Could you guys review the new savage MSR line? I'm looking into them but I'm but sure if I should commit.
Thanks for the great videos guys
James Yeagerand nutnfancy tested them out. They seemed to like the Recon. I heard the patrol version has bad issues.
TheApana no. Because he peddles those shit RAS and the incident of one of his "instructors"
I have that exact gun/scope combination. Haven't done any loading for it yet, so I'd be very interested in a loading video for it.
Could you do a video on the MAG-7 you had on the wall in your videos?
Also it really bugs me that we would have to go all the way to america to shoot a gun from our country. :D
You guys are making me miss my old PSL! Back in the good ol days when i bought one with 5 mags for $680.
Anybody got an idea of how pricey and hard to get one of these would be?
NormadBear 1 I'm assuming you're in America. Between $1,500 to $ 2,500 I'd say. They can be found on gunbroker frequently.
Yeah that surplus ammo is inconsistent. And I share the theory the powder charges not being the same.
Sure you got your numbers right? 1.5 meters or 5 feet hasnt been the everage height on any european since like the stoneage :)
it is hunting scope, military use 1.7 meters scale 1.5 is for deer
Take into account most 6' guys are gonna be loaded with gear and crouching, 5' reticle makes sense.
Great video guys! Love the tower set up. Looking forward to seeing what you can do with some better ammo!
Dammit. Now I want a PSL.
"Safety Sally's" lol; good one Chad, love it!
make america swole again
I love this "Odd guns at 600 yards" series. Sooo Good!
Can u revisit this with match ammo even if it's 2 mins long please I will buy 3 mega man cans if u doooo
Ahhh nvm I watched till the end
No, you have to buy the ammo now. Just give it to me instead. My Mosin will eat it.
Rapid-fire = less time to over-think = less time to miss :)
dat sonic crack~
ForcedChaos i dont know what it is but that is one of the big reasons i love this gun
I hope you guys do more "600 Yard" videos, but I'd like to see what an M91/30 or M44 Mosin Nagant performs at these kind of ranges.
Romanian pumpkin spice latte.
I love mine ! I upgraded the optics from the 4x issue LPS scope to a POSP 6x. It fills my needs.I give it a pretty consistent diet of PPU 150 gr. Soft points.
how has the ppu done compaired to the milsurp for you?
She is beautiful!
yes she is...
I've heard the idea behind that range finding reticle isn't that they're shorter over there, but that the height is based off the shoulder to feet since heads can be hard to see at range.
BIG AK
there's the thing...it's amix beetween an AK, Moisin Nagant, RPK and SVD all in one rifle...
After waiting a few years, centerfire systems got some parts kits in for $599, and I finally got one!
Those 2 cases I got years ago can finally be put to use!
FUGLY MOSIN at 600yards, like if you agree
i actually think its kind of smexy
I love the sound the PSL makes when firing the last round. It's like BOOOF! :P
tf is a psl? every gamer, gun nut, action movie watcher knows this rifle as a svd dragunov
Alexander Smith it's not a SVD
That's the joke.
Alexander Smith the PSL and The SVD share almost nothing in common but the caliber
My dad during the 80's was a the DM in his platoon, obviously used the PSL he said that the effective combat range was about 1600 meters, all the marksmen were trained to fire at that range, but in the context of the squad work they never expected to fire any further than about 800 meters, primary job for them was cover fire for the squad
you have no idea about you wrote, the range of PSL is 800!
5:03 the crack of the round followed by the steel ring has a notable "1-2". So cool.
i really liked the camera angle on this one. enjoyed hearing the cracks, splashes and hits. i spent the whole time looking at the right hand side lol.
Making the Hakim video tomorrow!
I enjoy chads little quips and comments when he is off camera spotting for mr.iv8888 lol
barrel whip is notorious in this rifle when it heats up. my PSL was shortened and mod'd by Rifle Dynamics, 18" barrel and has really made a difference.
I thought Jim Fuller at RD cut it down to 19 inches not 18
Some rounds dribble out of the ejection port and others look to eject a mile. Very inconsistent. Maybe revisit with hand loads and the ALG trigger?
I would like to see that second visit on this gun. That ammunition sounds and feels like is not even worth buying. Exceptional video, as always!
its interesting to see how it strings shots left as the barrel heats up, my PSL does the same thing. ive taken it out to 600 yards and had about the same accuracy.
