The song is about drugs being a puppeteer of an addicts life and controlling them. The whole tempo of the song and change ups are to show how you would come down, crave, get high , then crash and repeat drugs! You should watch the lyrics video and you will truly appreciate this song.
@@stevelarson3391 Metallica 1986 was pretty great…but I think there is a special venom in Het’s voice during this show that just adds an whole level of malevolence to this show. It’s particularly exemplified during ‘The Thing That Should Not Be’. They’re full of booze and uppers and you see that Satanic glimmer in Hetfield’s eye as he sings that song… it’s dead fuckin magical, man. Just bloody godlike.
Metallica in Seattle 1989 is the pinnacle of all music 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘. Unmatched….above and beyond. Level of energy, musical talent, instrumentation and stage presence cannot be matched
Growing up in the 80s Metallica is what kept me alive. In those dark times listening to Metallica just pulled me out of those moments. The one song that really helped me pull through is Fade to Black. Very dark, but the way they do the song just filled me with energy.
It's called 'headbanging' & the song you heard before was called 'Nothing Else Matters' and the opening of this performance was from the instrumental 'To Live is to Die' from the album '...And Justice for All.' The rest is Master of Puppets from the album Master of Puppets.
I just hate the fact that Cliff wasn't around to experience Metallicas success, they were just beginning to climb up the music ladder when he was killed.
lol right? They haven't been around long enough. Not that I disagree as far as Lar's composition chops are concerned, but. They don't yet understand why Lars changes his tempo so often ha
You need to watch Cliff Burton the original base guitarist he passed away in a horrible way on the tour bus. PLEASE SHOW HIM 🙏❤. MUCH LOVE TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY 💕BRANDI MODRAK 💕
Congratulations. You are now fledgling Metalheads/Head Bangers. To become "members in good standing" you must now dive down the Metallica rabbit-hole. Give the official video a look. It was filmed about 10-12 years ago (live) and is interspersed with footage from a movie they produced. The energy with which they play and the interactions with the crowd are STILL as off the hook as it was back in the day. Moscow 1991 is also an incredible show (my favorite is Harvester Of Sorrow). Good luck on your journey.
9:39 - James punches the crash cymbal, it put Lars' drumming off beat but it still worked, James looked at Lars hoping he gets back in sync, he did but James' hand hurts a bit and you can tell that as he is sloppy for a second but the reactor's voices hid it a lot...lol It is subtle. This is the power of Metallica on 1980s cocaine, everyone!
You guys must do Welcome Home Sanitarium from this same show. It's a bit slower. My favorite song! Or you can see them a bit later I recommend The Day that Never Comes live in Nimes France 2009, it's an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G performance!!!
Your differentiation of musicians (art is built into a musician naturally, IMO )and artists that don't know a bass guitar from a stand electric guitar show off a deep level of thinking. Wish there were more people like you guys in the world.
This was my first time seeing them I was 16 the band Faith No More was the opening band during their 2nd song the crowd was so loud Chanting Metallica metallica Metallica.you could not hear the band playing they got Booed off the stage. the singer dropped the Mic and walked off the stage the show was incredible they were so loud my ears Rung for a week but it was great because I just seen the Baddest MotherFuckers on the Planet I have only seen them 11th times and I need more white Boy Paul from Utah peace Sells But Who's Buying out 🤘🇺🇲🇺🇲🤘
The drums are in 4/4 timing, but the pauses and the fact the picking in the guitar riff are somewhat uniquely offbeat is why the timing sounds off, but Lars is playing mostly standard 4/4 (1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4) If you count along 1 2 3 4 during the song (with the drums only, tune out the guitar) you'll catch it, it's all in 4/4
You are 100% correct. Lars as a drummer is unique that he accents the "off-beat" So when you were saying 3 count instead of 4 count... I appreciate that you noticed that. He accents the 3rd or 5th beat, but still the odd number... I love that you caught that. Because of that... I am looking forward to looking at more of your critiques. That one observation proves to me that you "really" listen
I was just thinking that MASTER OF PUPPETS and MORPHINE by Michael Jackson share a similar topic and a similar structure. Both are about drugs / addiction and go very hard. Also, both songs have this cloudlike middle part (where the drugs are being consumed / give some dangerous solace).
Lars is a top drummer but I've heard he's not the most likeable guy with regular run ins with former and current members. "One" official music video. It's their first video, a sad topic, but a face melter when it comes to the headbanging. Also check "Enter Sandman" Live from Moscow. It's the first concert after the cold war and the fall of the Soviet Union.
Another live performance from them I think you should check out is Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth). It's VERY bass heavy, but it's one of their best in my opinion.
great review. thank you. the netflix tv show "Stranger things" might be bringing some traffic to this song. it featured in their season 4 finale. it brought me to you
Yeah-the time signature during the verse section is literally uncountable. I listened to a jazz-trained musician and producer analyse this tune, and even he couldn’t figure out how to count that bit you’re talking about. Good ear, though, catching that! You a drummer, yourself, mate?
Lars was highly under-rated as a drummer. I'm not sure why but he was criticized for his playing. I always thought he was amazing and I have been lucky enough to see Metallica live 5 times. Always an incredible show and loved Lars nailing every hit. I certainly could not do all those fast songs for 2 hours.

Lars is Lars. Check out Danny Carry of Tool or The Rev of Avenged Sevenfold if you want great drummers. Or farther back ... John Bonham, Keith Moon, Buddy Rich
The instrumental at the beginning is not part of the song. It was a tribute to the original bass player who passed. And while it is a cool instrumental, it kind of takes away from the story behind master of puppets.
Great song from a very good album. At this time Lars was at his prime and a solid drummer. World's greatest? Nope... I could mention 50 who are better than him.. yeah even some female ones. In late 80s he kind of surfed on their success, and got more acclaim from it. He was also a massive douche. During the follow up "...and justice for all", he turned down the bassist Jason's channel to the point it was hard to hear what he was playing.
The song is about drugs being a puppeteer of an addicts life and controlling them. The whole tempo of the song and change ups are to show how you would come down, crave, get high , then crash and repeat drugs! You should watch the lyrics video and you will truly appreciate this song.
The intro music you've heard was an excerpt from To Live is To Die as dedication to their fallen bandmate Cliff Burton who passed in 86.

Metallica is part of the reason GenX has neck problems. Just ask Jason.
Metallica music needs no words... It tells a story through notes instead of lyrics
Went to this concert when they came here in 89. It was amazing, and Im pretty sure my ears are still ringing.

Metallica at it's Apex right here. The raw explosive energy and power when the song kicks in gives me chills every time!!

The thing that should not be from the same concert. Underrated masterpiece, arguably the best song from Master of Puppets.

This song changes time signature many times and some of them are 21/32 so it can be a big challenge to learn to play vs the original 4/4
