Very true, I just wish the crowd noise wasn’t so LOUD in the recordings of this concert so you can actually hear it better. Don’t get me wrong, I love hearing a loud af crowd, but I wish they also had a direct recording from their amps and kits so we could also listen to just the performance with a hell of a lot less crowd noise if we wanted to. Like how they record their live shows now. I know this was back in ‘89 so it wasn’t as easy, but good damn if they had a recording like that of this concert it would legitimately be the greatest thing ever recorded on audio and there would be absolutely nothing you could complain about it for. What a way to start off the greatest metal album of all time "Master Of Puppets"...the acoustic guitar lulls you into a moment of "okay this is nice" then bam a kick to the face. Yes, Battery street in San Fran was were all the clubs were that all these underground bands played. They all knew each other and were part of the Battery "family"... hence "cannot kill the family, battery is found in me." The song depicts the thrash metal scene of the early 80's with vivid mosh pit imagery.

Battery is both an homage to Battery St. in San Francisco, but also a reference to the energy they get from their fans.
James sings "Cannot kill the family, Battery is found in me." He's referring to the greater Metallica family including fans and supporters, and how their energy drives him forward.

I was 14 when this show went down. This was the tour where I saw them for my first concert at Red Rock in Colorado.
They were originally from the L. A. area but that was during the glam metal era so thy couldn't get noticed so they moved up to the bay area where the heavier scene was thriving.

The song is supposedly a tribute to the San Francisco thrash scene of the early 1980s, and in particular the Old Waldorf Club, located at 444 Battery Street (hence Battery) in San Francisco, where they played some of their first Bay Area shows.

They did a lot of gigs on a venue that was on Battery street, but this title has many meanings and pretty much all of them fit the song. Battery as an energy source, well, if this doesn't get you out of bed, you are dead. And then there is the assault kind of Battery, which is basically what happens in the mosh pits in their concerts... People get banged up in those. And in the really early days before Metallica moved to SF, they used to play gigs in LA, which had a huge hair metal scene and the hair metal and thrash metal fans were like oil and water. And there was pretty much ambulance at each of their shows as someone was going meet the sharp end of a knife... The SF scene was way more in tune with the wave of New British Metal that Metallica was into. You cannot even feel 5% of how these things play out live on RUclips... You can hear the crowd, but it is a whole other thing to feel it.

I first started going to concerts in 1988, and Metallica was on the bill for two of the four concerts I saw that year. I saw them on the Monsters of Rock tour in the early summer, when Metallica was second (?) on a bill that had Van Halen, Scorpions, Dokken and Kingdom Come. I became an instant fan of Metallica that day even though I hadn't heard much of them before hand (I was there for Van Halen). Then I saw them headline in the fall with Queensryche as their openers, and they delivered yet another amazing set.
Over the years, Metallica has changed (evolved), and while I'm not always happy with their studio output (mostly St. Anger), they always delivered the goods live, and a lot of that can be attributed to James, who has been one of the best frontmen in metal history. He really knows how to get the crowd into the show and keep them there for 2 hours plus. I have tickets to see them in Atlanta in November, and I am definitely looking forward to it, since some of their best sets come when they aren't promoting a new album.

This song is from their 3rd album Master Of Puppets in 1986, I was 11. Bunch of kids at school had Metallica shirts and patches on their denim jackets. Took the cassette out of my brother's car to see what the big deal was about Metallica. Listening to the acoustic intro of this song (1st song, side 1), I thought to myself, this isn't heavy. Then it kicked in and I was floored and would never be the same musically.
