- Who was Childeric I and why is he such an important figure among the Merovingians?
In this video, we're going to cover the history of Childeric I. This will include his rule during the final days of the western roman empire and his place in the Merovingian dynasty. In addition, we will also cover how Childeric historically has come to symbolize the transition between the roman empire and the early middle ages in western Europe.
This video is part of a collaboration between a group of really awesome RUclipsrs were we cover the history of the Merovingians.

I love the inclusion of Napoleon!
@@HistoryandHeadlines Thankyou! Happy to hear that :)
you sound to Swedish
Half Roman. Half "Barbarian". Very cool that you chose this king and showed the connection between the ancient world and the medieval world.
Thank you, Matt!
Half Roman, half Germanic… he’s the first Belgian! :D
Surprised I had never even heard of such an epic figure!
Schooling often gets in the way of our education. I learned more history, science, and the world after getting a library card. Only good thing in school was the 3 R's.
Homeschooling is a great thing, but not all families have the money or time to teach their kids.
Childeric also fought the Saxons and Alamanni in his military career. Also, Childeric was not the first king of the Franks, but a king of the Salian Franks, it was his son Clovis that was the first Frankish king as he united all of the Frankish tribes together. Great video though! Shame there's not many videos on Childeric and the early Franks.
Yes more medieval history videos!, great job man
Thankyou man! :)
Very nice video. I knew about king Louis' use of bees, but this is the first time I have heard about Childeric being buried with golden bees.
Thank you! :)
This is the first usage of bees in a symbolic and perhaps religious manner. But because there is no written documentation or oral passed on lore of what these bees signify, it is also a bit of a mystery or canondrum.
Hello, I'm french, and I have learnt something again ! Thank you very much
In fact Napoleon wore some of the actual "golden bee" broches on his coronation cloak. Not only embroidered.
(Quotation marks because art historians think they rather showed cicadae then bees.)
The grave of Childeric I had been discovered 1635.
The precious grave goods/treasures where taken by the then-austrian noble of the region.
Traded up the food chain to the Habsburg rulers of austria.
And gifted to Napoleon by Leopold II hundreds of years later. (who had some copies and recordings made before sending them to paris, which is why we still know how some of it looked.)
So Napoleon actually wore 1400 years old frankish kings gold on his mantle when he was crowned.
Later on some thieves stole the whole treasure in paris, melted down the gold and dumped the rest in the Seine. ☹
Fantastic. Are you planning on doing a video on Clovis as well? Or maybe even Charles Martell?
Thankyou Matt! I might make a video on it later this year depending on how my schedule will look like. My next video though will be on the northern crusades.
Awesome video man! As always. Love your stuff.
This is Barris! Thankyou Barris! When Will your video come out? :)
I'm doing my own heritage research, and - as all Europeans ;) - I found out Charlemagne is in my forefathers (not really taking this for granted of course). Therefore, Clovis and Childeric are too. And this is a part of history I never learned much about, so I'm just googling this now. I think a bit later in time some of the wives got captured by Atilla the Hun, and a lot of murdering was going on. What an exciting life my ancestors had :P :D
childeric is in my tree too! are you european? i’m mestiza but mostly european
@@starkbarnes yes I'm very Dutch 😅 but if you trace far enough back, you can find almost all European and biblical lands in a family tree 😉
I had to look up mestiza 🙈 What indigenous people are you descendant from?
@@PineNimba that’s true! my european side is mostly spanish but since doing my tree i’ve seen spanish, french, and german royalty.
also i love the dutch! y’all are great! beautiful culture.
my native side, my ancestors on that side were guachichile and guamare chichimeca natives to what is now modern day jalisco/zacatecas in mexico. there’s not much on them but i’m proud of them too since they were able to fight off my spanish ancestors for 40 years before they came to a somewhat peace treaty
how can you get the pronunciation of Merovingians so perfect and get the "ch" of Childeric so wrong? its pronounced like a 'k'. just like in chilia. thank you. looking forward to the other videos -
i clicked the playlist link and it doesnt exist. is there a playlist somewhere else maybe? thank you
I think you should have used the golden bee as symbol for this colab instead of the fluer-de-lis
Good video
Thankyou Bloopsan! :D
I want to know more about Merovich. The guy who it’s named by.
What was the other name for the Merovingian Bees? They were called something else and a quick google aint turning up anything
The Idea of Roman Emporial Power became a political ideal for a very long time. Probably because the Romans ran their well organised and very rich and powerful empire for such a long time.
The actual difference of being a tribal leader or a king was in those days sometimes debatable. So to boost yourself up as a real powerful king, you used Roman attributes of power which evetybody knew. But actually you were a tribal warlord.
I dont know what nationality this fellow is but he sounds very similar to Schwerpunkt...whatever nation it is they are churning out some jam up historians!

So that you know why there's a down vote, and partially watched video: I find the background "emotion" music really annoying. Otherwise, it was very interesting.
Good troling friend
@@quillinkhistory9539 why do you think this is a troll? (Or are people not allowed to dislike it when music is added to documentaries for the sole purpose of eliciting emotional reactions?)
@@RonJohn63 "Why do you think this is a troll?" Because it is ;)

What do you mean?
Quill & Ink History that‘s a closer reconstruction of “Clovis childrric’s son.” It’s what his name might have sounded like in their Germanic language.
@@princekrazie Ahh ok.
