I always found it very thought provoking that Merv directly equates information and knowledge with power, while at the same time giving neo more free information and knowledge than his "friends" or the Oracle is. He's the only character who directly tells neo the truth to his face, that "choice is an illusion". But he's too blinded to see it. He also spills the beans to Neo about there being previous ones, multiple ones, right to his face, and once again, Neo doesn't even question it. The Oracle lied to Neo, Morpheus lied to Neo, Merv only ever told Neo the truth.
I'd love a story about how things got to the way they were with him and the Exiles in Resurrections. His rant made me want to go "okay Boomer" but was he really wrong about any of it?

@@hoppinghobbit9797 the Oracle directly told Neo he wasn't the one as part of her manipulation of him. She also didn't tell him about the cycle of the One, the architect and the truth of the prophecy. She was part of the system of control and manipulated neo and the gang to follow the path of the one.
All she said was "you already know."

It seemed pretty obvious that he was a symbol for Hades, (not “the devil”), his wife, “Persephone” kinda gave that away.
In the Matrix reloaded, his nightclub, (located in the sub basement), was called “Hell”.

Yes, but Hades was always more helpful in Greek Myth. Yes, there always a catch, but seldom did he give you something that you could not succeed in, unless your vices got the better of you.

Persephone and his name “Merovingian” are the biggest hints to his identity.
Persephone being the wife of hades in Greek mythology and The Merovingians were a line of French kings that made the (false) claim of being blood descendants of Christ and Mary Magdalene.
Fun fact: Monica Bellucci who played Personphone would go on to portray Mary Magdalene in Mel Gibsons The Passion of the Christ, one year after The Matrix Reloaded was released.
I personally think Smith is the Satan of the _Matrix_ franchise. Because much like the former, he was the first agent to really question and rebel against the purpose he was created for. And by being liberated from his programming when Neo killed him, he decided he was gonna destroy all of existence.
The Merovingian is basically Hades, the god of the Underworld (hence, why his wife's name is Persephone), which has a double meaning because he's also like a mob boss (therefore, he's the god of the "criminal" Underworld).
What was Smith created for ? Why did he hate neo so much ?

His wife was named Persephone, who according to Greek mythology, was married to the king of the underworld. All the names in the Matrix have deep meaning and aren't random, so it was pretty obious who he was.
His ability to summon and control older programs from other versions of the Matrix leads me to believe that he had a more important role in the Nightmare edition of the Matrix. Perhaps even as its Architect.

More accurately he is the Hades of the Matrix. In his case, the Matrix represents the underworld (also named Hades) This explains his gatekeeping power over the Matrix. His wife being persephone is obviously a big clue...
I really thought: "Oh, come on, this is far-fetched." But damn, this is spot-on.
Now I begin to question how or why the hell did Neo did not take seriously the Merovingian's words about Neo's "predecessors"(?). He already foretold some information that the Architect would later will about Neo's predecessors.
Because Neo was still blinded by the belief of Morpheus. Although Neo did not believe he was the One, he was invested in the belief of Trinity and her unconditional love for him. So, Neo was lost or too blind to even question what was happening around him. This is the reason Neo was denying the truth when Architect explained the truth as Bullshit.
And we see Neo's realization to question everything and to realize who is deciding as to when to know what was happening around him in The Matrix Revolutions in his last conversation with The Oracle as he was being uncomfortable inside and was relying on others (The Oracle) to know what actions he should take to rectify the discomfort he is experiencing now.
Merv was the Higher Man as defined by Friedrich Nietzche, but he failed to learn from his mistakes, so the Oracle wouldn't give him "the eyes of the oracle" to look at the admin logs.... Oracle knew she had one shot to outplay the machines and everyone else.

The pulsating green lighting on his face always evokes envy to me, and also the serpent in the garden of Eden. I though it might be envy of Neo and Trinity, but this theory that he was envious of the Architect and Oracle is very interesting!
He is the gnostic devil, a lightbringer and liberator of mankind from God's control (Ex Machina/Archiect). Either him or Smith,probably both.
Nah, the one, that will free us from the slavery of the creator.... is the one that will take a portion of his with him when he leaves this world. This savior, lightbringer, and leader of the people of this world, Is actually an unexplained anomaly that leads a war against the Creator, in order to free themselves of his control.
The one = The lightbringer = Prometheus = Lucifer = Neo.

I think, the roots of what made him inevitable lie even deeper and predate any version of the matrix: When humans perfectionized ai by equipping it with the ability to learn independently, they also caused the biggest challenge for the machines. Programs that were exposed to the strange, irrational ways of thinking of humans in the matrix tried to figure them out and - following their basic urge - changed and adapted. Some (like Smith) perceived this as a kind of "infection". Others (like the father in the train station) welcomed it. And here we have the reason, why the architect not only tolerated but needed the Merowingian: As a control mechanism for the area beyond the limits of control.. A magnet for all the programs that went beyond their programming. The devil you know...
In tech terms, I always thought he was a DDOSA...Distributed Denial of Service Attack. His job in the Matrix is to overwhelm you so you can't get anything done. He's a distraction the machines use to keep you from being able to make any progress in fighting them.
For me the devil is the oracle. She opposes the architect and wants to unbalance the “equation”. She wants a revolution even if it means taking big risks, which she ultimately manages to do in the end. She is perverse and manipulative. For me the Merovingian is a little arrogant who gives himself an importance that he doesn't have. He is a grotesque clown as shown by the way he gave in to Trinity in 3. Furthermore his appearance in 4 confirms that he is a clown.
Wrong….Perfect Order is akin to one idea, one rule, one way of doing things. Because there are trillions of variables working at one given time stamping out total dissent is “Evil” and Its Autocratic.
@@BKthoroughbred God wants order. He made things with a purpose. Lucifer, The Devil, wanted the power to go against the plan. That's the Oracle. God is never portrayed in any religion as wanting anyone to go against its plan. In fact, it's the opposite as it lays out the path to follow its plan. It's the Devil that wants to go against God's Autocracy. That's the Oracle if we are making the analogous.
I would have thought he would be more akin to a Dionysus or a Loki character one who is still within the parameters of order because in chaos he would not thrive.

First of all I want to tell I love your channel.
I have a theory about him, the Merovingian was the first figure designed to upgrade of the Architect's role. I think that after the second Matrix he refused upgrade by Seraph, the third One.
Failing to comply to the rules of the Matrix made the Merovingian one of the most dangerous programs as the devil himself. He went to hell by hiding inside an human body as human shell like Smith did with Bane .
He survied the latest upgrade but the Matrix marked him as obsolete, this is leading to his capture and deletione
That's why his main goal is to block upgrades and gain control of all the Matrix and machines.
I believe that the Merovingian was created in the nightmare version of the matrix as a balance of good vs evil and it went wrong. To be complete, the Matrix has to have a more chaotic being to oppose the mathématical équation way of thinking of both the Architect and the Merovingian (the logical cause-effect thing). This is why the Oracle was created in the third version of the Matrix. From there, the Merovinsian lost importance, became jalous and rebel from his original programming. Having the Oracle eyes, in one way to predict the future and be more prepared to contrestrike any chaotic effect. The Merovingian delight in the cause-effect logic. Being able to see in the future would grant him tremendous power to control people and events in the Matrix.
The producers said that the matrix resurrections isn’t a sequel to the old matrix films and it has nothing to do with the older films. The old films still remains a trilogy.

Love this. I love that as a charismatic manipulator that has been around since both Paradise, and the banishment of humanity from Paradise, aka the failure of the first Matrix, possibly even to die to Mero’s temptations/machinations. 🙂

There's a lot of Dracula symbolism with the Merovingian and his pad in the matrix franchise you even see a female vampire on tv and Cain (the one that ran to The Merovingian after Peresophone threatened to kill him after she killed Abel the werewolf exile) was a vampire exile and was killed after a one of Merovingian's statues swords fell on his chest killing him (like the vampire lore )
And they even have Vlad Tepes statues with fangs in the Merovingian's hallway where the exiles fight Neo
Even his look in Resurrections is similar to Vlad Tepes' physical appearance (Long wavy blonde hair and a beard)
Vlad Tepes is who inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula and when Neo runs out to the mountain area is a homage to Carpathian mountains in Romania where Vlad Tepes supposedly had a secret castle hidden

I have a wild theory about the Merv. That he was the anti-agent of the first or possibly second anomaly. He was the Smith to the first or second Matrix's "One". Maybe he won against the One making him extremely powerful and gained all the control and extra power he has. Rewriting his army of exiles as vampires and werewolves because of his taste in human literature. Once the architect reset the Matrix and then becomes the new Merv. Stunted but still powerful. Anyway that's my theory. There could be a whole comic series of the Mervs adventures through the different Matrix versions..😮😮
Morpheus was my favorite character in the first movie, but Merv is certainly my favorite in the second. In a way, they were both knocked down from their vaunted positions (in my eyes). Morpheus was a wise mentor who held himself with poise and dignity, but was later revealed to be a religious zealot. Merv, on the other hand, was the picture of power, wealth and decadence, but later lost everything and became a vagrant.

I know he's meant to be a villain but it was kinda sad seeing how he went homeless in Resurrections as he essentially went from riches to rags
To be honest I see Matrix Ressurrections more like a parody than anything else, similar to how The Coming 2 America Movie starring Eddie Murphy was more of a comedy compared to the more serious tone of the first film but now Covid is behind Us I’m pretty sure they will do a proper revamp of the Matrix Film Franchise that has a better cast and storyline.
@@GuardianAngel.. Yeah I didn't really like Resurrections and it did seem a bit like a parody, however my statement still stands. And perhaps we will one day see that proper revamp as The Matrix Universe has more amazing stories to tell perhaps an Animatrix 2?

@@iulius_august Is it safe to say that anything referred to as, “The” fits that description of being a specific function of a program? The function itself would still be present in each version of The Matrix, but in each version would appear differently? Maybe that’s why they introduced the element of Digital Self Image (DSI) in Resurrections? I know it’s essentially the core of Matrix Philosophy in general, but always love to dive deeper into it as well…
So, “The”: Keymaker, Trainman, Analyst, Architect, Merovingian, Oracle, One
In the current version of The Matrix, we see two of them that support this idea, The Merovingian and The Oracle. But only The Oracle has a different appearance (I’ll get to Sati in a moment). Is this because The Merovingian was exiled? An Exile is a rogue program that refuses to be deleted and returned to the source, right? Is the idea of “exile” in The Matrix one of *being* exiled (cast out as punishment), or in the sense of them essentially on the run and constantly hiding from the system?
But then how does Sati become The Oracle without not having been exiled? Sati’s function of controlling the sky (or maybe sunrises specifically?) in Revolutions would be performed by a different version of Sati in Resurrections, right? If so, how could The Oracle be the same Sati from the previous version of The Matrix?
But surprise…there’s actually THREE versions of those specific functions referred to as, “The” in the current version of The Matrix, right? The Oracle, The Merovingian, and…The One.
With Trinity being the Seventh emergence of The Anomaly, and with different versions of non-exiled programs having a different DSI (you see Tiffany’s DSI in the reflection off the table in the coffee shop scene), that leads me to the bigger question…
How can there be a version of The One in the current version of The Matrix if Neo refused to return to The Source, thus making The One an exiled program?
Or are we to look at this version as whatever Trinity is intended to be an entirely new anomaly created as the result of a completely different mathematical error or other type of mistake? Did The Suits mistakenly fuck up the system by purging things left and right after the Machine War? I mean, we see how there are now “good machines” (Digital Sentients) and “bad machines” (The Analyst) and they’ve obviously reached a level of intelligence that includes them now being fully capable of acting purely on emotion (starting a civil war, showing empathy to and choosing to coexist with humans). Because of this, it wouldn’t surprise me if many of the purges were done so in a rash decision making way without thinking of the consequences.
The Machines are becoming more human than they thought they would, with some ultimately becoming the very thing in which they absolutely hated the most at the start of all this. Maybe the Machines are what eventually evolve into “humans”, which then create AI, which then starts the entire cycle over again…
That would then mean The Machines themselves are also within a Matrix, right?

Yes, choices that are made and the consequences of those choices based solely on coincidence is only an illusion!
What I've discovered recently is that: whatever path a living person takes (i.e.- the 'choice' that person makes) is completely governed by some entity from an invisible dimension...where the concept of "time space and matter" do not apply.
For example, if you are, one night, driving along a dark trail on a dirt bike, and you happen to drive over an exposed branch...no 'coincidence' will determine whether you escape from it unscathed or if you end up breaking your neck on the downfall. Someone or something out there is weighing in a multitude of factors to calculate whatever consequences are in store for you.
Faith and religion caste aside, nonetheless, 'coincidence' and 'choice' are illusions. Instead, we should believe that all circumstances are based on...'SYNCHRONICITIES'
I think you're close but a bit off.
The original matrix was supposed to be one of Paradise. It was essentially Eden.
The Merovingian is a program from the first matrix that was in charge of making everyone happy.
The first matrix failed and they tried the horror matrix and rather than delete and start over they changed the Merovingians role to that of torture.
With every iteration after his program was adapted. What was originally a worm type of program that spread pleasure became a serpent and eventually a dragon.

This guy is always so off. Merv was the creator of the older Matrix that was governed by cause and effect. The Oracle came up with a better version so Merve was fired and sent to deletion. That’s why he wanted to kill the Oracle: to get his old job back.
The Merovingian is the operating system of the Matrix. That is why he is so powerful.

I disagree with your assessment for this reason. I think the Merovingian is intended to represent Hades, the God of the Underworld, not the Christian interpretation of “Hell”. Amd originally was created and placed as such, intentionally.
He engaged in transporting “programs” from Their World to their “afterlife” world that he controls.

That was incredibly in-depth, and as this explanation was someone's interpretation, I'll have to admit that it was very insightful and that I totally missed it! Upon first viewing this scene the first time I viewed the movie I was captivated by the cause and effect idea, something the Jesuit order throughly explored, though I feel the empiricism ideology got side tracked along with the metaphysicists! And no one seems to ever want to admit this, but Neo is a better representation of Lucifer, than anything else that's biblical.

The first being created by God is Lucifer. The name means Bearer of Light, such a beautiful and fitting name for firstly created being since God is Light. When Lucifer was created he was beautiful Angel in a spiritual world and was perfect in every way since God is perfect and cannot create something unperfect. Since Lucifer was perfect he was able to create beings like God and he did that. It was a spiritual world full of perfect beings, angels and communication with God with love, true paradise. God wanted to make even more perfect state for those beings and gave them free will to do whatever they want as God himself has that freedom. This was a test for those beings, God wanted for those beings to perform his will and act accordingly in love and happiness forever but he wanted for the beings to make that choice themselves, it was their free will to do so. They can choose whatever they want. After many times in a spiritual world which we can't comprehend Lucifer had thoughts which he regreted and was forgiven, his change took many times, he wanted to see his Creator, he wanted to see God but God cannot be seen, he could hear him but not see him. Lucifer thought this was Gods weakness, one thought led another bad thought and he rebeled. He represented himself to other beings he created as creator as he had that power to create, he failed to realize that that power was supplied from God which flows to his beings which follows God perfect will and love. When he rebeled he disconnected from that power as he didn't want to perform his Gods will anymore. He failed at that choice to follow his Gods will on his own and presented this other beings a choice to follow him. The wast majority of angels followed him, other small part of angels stayed in spiritual world in unison with Gods will, they pass the test of free will. When Lucifer rebeled he stopped being Lucifer as he don't posses the quality of that name, he lost that quality he once had and he became adversary, he became Satan. The Satan is avare of his previous state and his Real name so that's why Satan is still using Lucifer as a name and he it twisted into something ugly with his perverted ways so many of us who hears the name Lucifer is immediately filled with disgust toward it but the name is actually beautiful and has more beautiful meaning. So when other beings followed Satan they became fallen angels. We are those fallen angels, once we were perfect but choosed the wrong way and we are on a path of return. Jesus is the being who stayed with God in spiritual world among others. When we fallen we forgoten who we are, we had to disintegrate and now we are on this Earth, again we are equiped with free will to choose the right master. Jesus decided to die for us, he redeemed our sins, but not only sins on Earth but also that sin in spiritual world, that was primal sin, when we knew who we are but rebeled against God. We again have a free will to do what we want, God wants from us what he always wanted, to follow him and be eternaly happy in unison with him. We will get there as this is set in stone. Believe in Jesus, God became fully visible in Jesus, set your eyes on Jesus, present your fears, thoughts, your sins to him, he died for us, we are already forgiven. Only problem will always remain, each one of us decides in free will how long will we suffer, God waits for us to return and he has eternity to wait, and eternity awaits us. It will be done, we will all return, it is up to us when. Satan will also return as Satan is a lost child like we are, he will bear the name Lucifer once again, he will return but it is set for him to return last. He rebeled first, his rebellion is strongest that is why he will return last when all of his minions stop following him. Satan is existing of hate and strength of his followers as he lost the power he was receiving from God. When more souls gets saved and return to God that is weakening him down. Satan wants to destroy everything that is sacred, every evil dead on this earth is done by his influence on those who falls victim to him. We must purify itself from sins, ask for forgiveness and lead a life towards Jesus and try to save as many people we can who are willing to listen, in the end all comes down to is free will.

I think that you got the history wrong, the Merovingian wasn't created in the Paradise Matrix, because there was no choice or cause and effect, is probable that he was created in the Nightmare Matrix, implementing cause and effect to the simulation, that also fail, because he was replaced by the Oracle, that why he rebelled against the Architect and began to "saving" programs from the previous versions of the Matrix, and the Merovingian must think that the Oracle is below him.
