Clothar’s murder of his young nephew children was one of the more brutal episodes in an already brutal history. I believe both nephews were 7 and 10 years old respectively and were to lured to their uncles Clothar and Childebert and thus savagely murdered by Clothar himself. I suppose though, if one were to look at it from a Merovingian king’s point of view, these two boys could in just a few years grow up and raise armies against Clothar, defeat him in battle, take his realm and execute he and his family. In this sense, the murder of his nephews may have been strategic and sensible (when looked at through the eyes of the brutal world of Merovingian kings).

I only intended to comment on the widespread tendency to think of nations as having existed far into the past, while its people have only (relatively) recently "united" as a whole. Not to criticize your work specifically. Keep up doing what you do, you make very interesting educational material.
Oh I definitely agree! I think the idea of a nation as we have it today is a very recent concept and just didn't exist in the past. People tend to implement present ideologies in the past (for example when the French says "our ancestor the gauls", implying Gaul was a unified state that existed before France) which I think is a bad thing. I'm glad you enjoy it.
I'm sorry, I hadn't realized my pronunciation made it hard to follow. I've now added subtitles (it takes some time to do) and will make sure to release videos with subtitles in the future. I hope you still enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and merde!
What astonished me, is how women who are considered as the timid and weak, exert the worst upon fellow women of power, when in power. Getting someone defiled to prevent her from becoming a queen in the distant future is horrible.
That's a neat idea, although I don't know how much interest it would get. Maybe I could make combine it with the Napoleonic code? Thanks for watching and merde!
When I was in high school I read a book by an English historian which argued that the Battle of Tours was a decisive battle of history. This historian apparently believed that if the Saracens had prevailed against the Franks, Islam would have displaced Christianity in France and throughout Western Europe.. In short Barris, you might still be speaking French, but also praying to God under the name of Allah. Of course, we can never know for certain whether this is what would have happened
You mean the Cochinchina Campaign? That is a pretty interesting idea. I'll definitely discuss as part of a broader Vietnam colonialism video. Thanks for watching and merde!
Because I'm not very happy with it. I still believe in its message, but I think I could have done a better job of it. I plan on remaking it eventually.
Didn't Henry II of the Plantegenet dynasty and Angevin Empire also follow Frankish tradition by splitting his lands between his sons? I ask since he was Duke of Normandy and Count of Anjou before winding up King of England, but as a French noble.
Yes, it's possible that he was inspired by Frankish traditions although I could not find anything that definitely affirm this. This was a transitory time and so no traditions were set in stone and it wasn't rare for kings to go back to the old ways. However, it's clear that the idea of primogeniture succession had emerged since his oldest son rebelled against him, not wanting his inheritance to be split apart! Thanks for watching and merde!
The video is part of a large collaboration about the Merovingians so if you want to learn more, I invite you to check out the playlist in the description. Enjoy and merde!
(Sniffs and wipes away tears) Look at Franky(or Sally), growing up so fast and learning how to love to decapitate and kill people all the while have people lunging at each others’ throat in a power struggle. I feel bad for Childeric III, the last of the Merovingians. What a miserable 8 years of "rule" he must've had. You're the last living member of a once great family, thrown into the spotlight but no ability to do anything that matters. No hope, no way out, just dreadfully waiting on the small estate that was his home between public appearances. At the end of it all, have the literal symbol of his family, the long hair that exemplified everything, shaved off him and his son and thrown into a monastery to die.
Its inetersting that the first steps of creating the EU started with the benelux the area that used to be the origins of the frank federation. and a few years later west germany france and italy joined in to the EEG. History repeating it self
@@ThisisBarris Lol je dis mon ancêtre car selon la théorie tout les européens actuel (donc moi inclus) ont pour ancêtre Charlemagne car tu doit avoir au moins un Noble dans ta famille ^^
I have an odd question: why is France called Frankrijk in Dutch and frankreich in German? The word rijk and Reich mean empire, but it was a kingdom. And why is Germany not called Frankreich as it was the home of Charlemagne?
I meant to say Christianity. In French, we say "Christianisme" and so that's where the mistake comes from - English is still my second language after all! Merde!

Yes, my aim is to eventually do the entire timeline. Thanks for watching and merde!
Very good video very interesting
Thank you. I really appreciate it. Merde!
So mad there’s no movies on the battle of Tours or other events of the early Middle Ages
What astonished me, is how women who are considered as the timid and weak, exert the worst upon fellow women of power, when in power. Getting someone defiled to prevent her from becoming a queen in the distant future is horrible.
Would you one day discuss La guerre de Cent Ans and the common myths/misconception in the Anglophone world?
yes! Would love to treat the 100 years war :) Merde
I'm gonna look past the pumped up kicks tune at the end
omg i love this vid!
Thank you! Merde!
You need to make a video of Charlemagne and continue this story
Definitely planning on making a video on Charlemagne. Thanks for watching and merde!
Please do a video about France’s judiciary in the Ancien Régime.
That's a neat idea, although I don't know how much interest it would get. Maybe I could make combine it with the Napoleonic code? Thanks for watching and merde!
Thank you, and it’s a good idea to combine it with the Napoleonic code.
Maybe, maybe not.
James Bryce wrote about this Empire in Europe.
You should do a video on the franco-spanish campaign into vietnam
You mean the Cochinchina Campaign? That is a pretty interesting idea. I'll definitely discuss as part of a broader Vietnam colonialism video. Thanks for watching and merde!
@This is Barris!-French History why did you privatise the video about Gaul existence? Please answer!
Can you make a video about the Merovingians?
The video is part of a large collaboration about the Merovingians so if you want to learn more, I invite you to check out the playlist in the description. Enjoy and merde!
Oooh so this is Barry channel
Indeed it is!
(Sniffs and wipes away tears)
Look at Franky(or Sally), growing up so fast and learning how to love to decapitate and kill people all the while have people lunging at each others’ throat in a power struggle.
They grow up so fast..
4:18
And Frédégonde looked like she’s seen some shit, for example, two of her slaves assassinated a prince but that wasn’t her fault, of course not. No. Non.
So fast indeed!
👏
Where did you managed to find the art works and the pictures of people?
Most of it comes from the online portal for the National Library of France - gallica.bnf.fr/accueil/en/content/accueil-en?mode=desktop
It's a great place to find illustration and contemporary sources. Thanks for watching and merde!
What is the name of the painting at 1:49? I could've sworn I have seen it before, but I haven't been able to find it.
Kriemhild’s Accusation (Kriemhild accuses Gunther and Hager of murdering her husband Siegfried) by Emil Lauffer. Thanks for watching and merde!
@@ThisisBarris Merci beaucoup monsieur
Epic as fuck
It was evident. Everything ends in its time.
MERDE , to you too ! SALUD!
What about the Nibelungids?
Need any new ideas for a video
I have quite a long list of videos already but I always welcome new ideas. Thanks for watching and merde!
@@ThisisBarris do the Incan royal family
That's outside the scope of my channel right now unfortunately, but very interesting. Perhaps one day.
Bon bah merde alors tu as pas le choix je veux un This is Barris sur Charlemagne mon ancêtre ♥
C'est ton ancêtre direct?? Wow!
Boi
Why do you call it Christianism instead of Christianity?.
Cos I translated from French and didn't realise in english the word is different haha sorry
Just caught a faide
Just don't let it faide away...
I have an odd question: why is France called Frankrijk in Dutch and frankreich in German? The word rijk and Reich mean empire, but it was a kingdom. And why is Germany not called Frankreich as it was the home of Charlemagne?
“Christianism”
Yeah that was me translating from French. It happens unfortunately. I hope you enjoyed the video nevertheless. Merde!
Are these things… proper? Wink wink
''CHRISTIANISM'' is a word?
I meant to say Christianity. In French, we say "Christianisme" and so that's where the mistake comes from - English is still my second language after all! Merde!
