- Why did we change our boat insurer? Find out in this episode of Sailing A B Sea where we also explore Ephesus in Turkey. There's evidence of human settlement at the site from 7,000 BC, but building of the actually city of Ephesus started in the 10th century BC. It is a huge site situated very close to the Turkish town of Kusadasi, where we were enjoying our stay at the marina, so we hopped on a bus and went exploring.

One of the biggest reason I follow the channel is the historic sites. You guys do a great job with them.
Thank you so much Jimbo, that's good feedback. 👍
We enjoy your tours ....seeing that i can not find a boat to buy ....I have to settle for your video's.....hard to believe that 350k cannot find a boat to buy .......
Keep up the shows thanks
Hi Jim, thanks for watching and being a subscriber. We also found it difficult to find boats for sale in Spain. Strange really.
Thank you for all your effort in putting the videos together and show the world how beautiful the people and country of Turkey truly is... You live it everyday and what you show is real and genuine. Be blessed.
It's our pleasure! Thank you for watching and commenting.
I absolutely love the historic sites. The reason for travel, IMHO. I also love it when you show the signs, information plaques, and posted pictograms. I can stop and read, and you can add lib or just show the signs and move on. I have always loved signs and the art of historical markers. I love to pause as it allows time for absorption and reflection. This episode ticked my interest in so many ways. 👏
Thank you for that helpful feedback Noone. 👍
Yes Admiral I am Still watching. I like all the content , especially how well you present it. Archeological sites are appreciated by me. please continue. Fair Winds 😎
Cool, thanks Darrell. 👍
These old ruin's are amazing , another for the bucket list
We are putting together a stand alone full length version of our visit to Ephesus. There's a lot to see. It should be out sometime next week.
@@SailingABSea Will look forward to that. Ephesus is astonishing, and so close to the site of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Temple Of Artemis, although to be fair it isn't that wonderous to behold any more. If you ever get to see the tube drill bores in Egypt that should rattle a few silt-deniers, as well as the 100 ton granite blocks cut perfectly flat millennia ago - actual machined surfaces from many thousands of years ago. My last few hairs stand on end at the thought of it, seriously. This YT video is pretty astonishing: ruclips.net/video/KFuf-gBuuno/видео.html
I hope his accent doesn't deter you from enjoying the video!!
Al
Thank you for taking me along with the tour of historic sites
Our pleasure Sheila. 👍
Lol Baz, good that you made it clear it was from 7000 BC rather than AD.
(Baz) I just knew that you'd pick up on that.
@@SailingABSea Of course I would. It means I pay close attention to what you say.
Ancient sites? Not a huge history buff; however, the architecture is something to behold. As a sailing channel, it's refreshing to see something other than tropical. Your interest appears to be very genuine, and that certainly resonates with me. You guys offer a good mix of travel information, sailing, sailboat lifestyle and maintenance.
Thank you very much for that great feedback Ken. We're glad that you're liking the balance we deliver. 👍
Love your visits to ancient sites and your general tour of Turkey. I have always thought visiting but now I am certain that I will, when we can travel. Thanks for your videos 👍
Our pleasure Al, thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers.
Baz, Put 2 to 4 extra turns on the drum of the Furlex when the sail is fully furled. The line is clamped to the plastic on the inside of the drum. If it gets to the end there's a risk it will break the plastic of the drum, the furling line goes flying and the you lose control of the sail. It happened to us in a force 6.... scary!!!... The wind pulled the genny all the way out and we had no way of getting it back in.
(Baz) That's a good tip, certainly wouldn't want a runaway sail , especially the size that ours is. Cheers.
Loved the vid as always. I liked the bit at the ancient site were it was hot and you said Aannsha was having palpitations, that wasn't the heat Baz that was you. You've still got the x factor 😄
(Baz) Hahahaha still got the x factor. Love it mate. 😂
Yeah. Sure! 😆
These ancient sites are interesting. Glad you do visit them. 👍🙂
Glad you like them Bayani. 👍
Ephesus is absolutely incredible. To see how roman city dwellers lived 2000 years ago, everything from library to contraception, from the brothels and public toilets to the fresh water plumbing and sewage systems, it is just extraordinary. It's very strange to walk right on top of the plumbing earthenware as it disintegrates in the dust, seemingly a very casual approach to archaeology. I have been lucky enough to have seen both Pompeii and Ephesus, and they are very comparable. Ephesus needs a museum like Pompeii has - it eminently deserves it. Like Pompeii it has at least 50% more underneath the nearby hills waiting to be unearthed. Like Pompeii and Herculaneum it also used to be a port town, yet the sea is now a mile or two away. So much for global warming flooding the land.
On the way from Bodrum to Ephesus our minibus stopped at a restaurant by a huge lake for breakfast with stunning views of the mountains miles away on the opposite shore, and also miles and miles of cotton fields with old people collecting the cotton to sell, just an amazing place, and amazingly hot too. Always a good idea to take a parasol with you there, the same way we do here in England, though for different reasons.
I don't know anything about it but apparently several books of the Bible (is that correct?) were read out to a crowd of learned men and destroyed in the big amphitheatre in Ephesus - actually burnt right there because the stories didn't reflect what the editors wanted to portray - before christianity started to make its way across to Gaul and Pretania. The unexcavated part of Ephesus in the hills directly adjacent to Ephesus are thought to contain the house of Mary Magdalen - was she Jesus's piece of tail or something? I don't know. Oh, just Googled it and read that it's thought Jesus fathered two children with her, so she really was his bird. I wonder how many of us share the bloodline handed down thereafter.
Actually, I've always felt rather special myself after achieving the title of King Conker in the Eastleigh and District boy scouts Gang Show at the Town Hall in 1967; it's always made me wonder if I'm not part of a rather special bloodline, although I was actually only standing in for Christopher Philpott, the real King Conker, who had a croup so his mother made him stay at home. She was right, as no scout troop wants their King Conker to be barking like a miserable labrador right through the extravaganza.
(Baz) There are more words in your comment than there are in my blog this week. I'll have to up my game. Cheers. 👍 😀
Many ancient ports are now inlands because of river sediments over the millenia. Nothing to do with global warming or cooling or whatever..
@razisn agreed, we have noticed that a major contributing factor in the eventual collapse of some of these great cities was the rivers they were built along becoming too shallow for ships to navigate, due to sediment build up.
Blimey, that's a record, TWO people have read one of my comments, THREE if you count me, though to be fair I skipped through the boring bits until I saw the word 'labrador', as I like dogs. Cheers y'all!!
@@SailingABSea Ha ha!
You missed Mary's house. Just up the hill, well a wee bit more than just. We got a 57 Chevy taxi which took us up there. Brought us down to the top gate, this lets you see the cave where some young men were supposed to have slept for a hundred years, and then tou walk down to the lower entrance where the chappie was waiting and he drove us back to Kusadasi. However the noise his engine was making it won't still be on the road. Fascinating place innit.
Probably one of the most fascinating places we've visited. In fact we are going to go back there when we head back up the Turkish coast next year. 👍
Been to efes 5 times
Always in amazement and awe
Always see something i didnt notice previously
It is one of the top sites to visit, we will go back there. 👍
Brings back memories of first visit to TR 28 years ago a ferry from GR to Ephesus. Back then they had the best bus system - 1 hour/100km/$1 so 10 hour 1000km trip for 10 bucks on new nice modern clean buses.
You guys will like Antalya. Spent 2 weeks there and could have spent the winter there if not for the marina being so far out. Make sure to check out The Barrels pub in Konyaalti. Was my afternoon watering hole. Cheers
We are considering taking A B Sea to Antalya so that we can check it out so we'll definitely look out for The Barrels pub. 😀
@@SailingABSea 👍really good bar grub too! And really nice prices!!
Another great video really enjoy the mix of boat life /jobs as well as scenery and the archeological sites you visit. Must put this one in my list to see as it looked fab. Look forward already to next video thanks
That's great feedback, thanks. 👍
I like the historical site tours but I am a history geek.
Thanks for that feedback Sea Travel. 👍
An insurance company shouldn't be allowed to say ''you can't go further than 30 degrees'' really especially while the boat is still in same sea and even same country...
(Baz) I could've worded it a little better. They would let us go further east, but we'd be charged more for that privilege.
I think it's because they don't want vessels they insure near to what they consider a war zone. We attended the Republic Day celebrations last night and the whole town of Finike was out celebrating. All very peaceful and having a good time. Certainly not a war zone.
@@SailingABSea yet
We call this place Efez in Poland, but I always thought it is in Greece. Thank you for helping me fight my own ignorance.
When it was built during the 10th century BC, the land area was part of ancient Greece. We are amazed at the history of this part of the world and which empires have claimed ownership over the millennia.
@@SailingABSea I do think that Greeks went there no sooner than Classical times which would be at least 6 centuries later. Maybe I'm mistaken, but certainly much later than 10th century BC. In any case, main language spoken there was Greek until much much later than when the place was abandoned.
@@razisn I think I saw it in Wikipedia, but we know how inaccurate that can be sometimes.
I like very much all your visits of Turkish sites with all the pieces of information about them… You are a great asset to Turkey tourism … So keep it up !!
How does the new arrangement on the cover of the furler improve the stuation?
Thanks Michel. The furling drum cover adjustment now means that it is fully and properly secured at the three points of the bolts. 👍
Thank you for clarification 😀
👌
Cheers mate. 👍
If you were in Athens, you would have a car from us, that we will NEVER be fully booked for you! Enjoy your AMAZING journey!
Maybe one day we'll return to Athens. 👍
You asked - I answer. ~~~~~ Visiting ancient sites is the best part of your channel. There are over 1,000 sailing channels - you have to pick your niche' and ride it hard. Repairs and marina life will only take you so far. Where AB Sea stands out is the exploration of land and sea. I have to admit I was disappointed by the Ephesus tour - for a world landmark - you didn't do it justice. Perhaps you should have bought more water at the entrance. The Library at Ephesus was one of the most important repositories of information in the known world - back in it's day - and it would have have been nice to hear more about it. I hope Aannsha was please with it - as it was a bookmark in her mind since her youth.
Apparently I stand corrected - I apologize.
We are putting together a stand alone full length version of Ephesus. There's a lot to see.
@@SailingABSea - Sometimes I feel like Kathy Bates in Misery - since - "I'm your biggest fan."
A great movie. 👍
Very ungentlemany of you Baz, making Aannsha walk on the traffic side of the road. Tsk tsk tsk. :P
(Baz) I thought the same thing when I saw the footage. It's raining here today, I'll make sure I lay down my cloak over a large puddle when we walk to the Saturday market. 👍
@@SailingABSea haha
@@SailingABSea that I'd like to see. It is market day today. And it is also raining...
That didn't even enter my mind! You chivalrous guys you.
@@AannshaJones Blame my grandmother for that lololol
Actually, since you asked...
I really love learning about places I'll never see in person. So, it would be great if,
since you have pre-paid entry, you did a deeper dive into the history of the places you visit?
For example, "When was the 'Library' built and by whom?"
Just my two cents.

That's great feedback, There is a longer stand alone video of Ephesus coming out in a few days. Cheers.
I like those ancient sites you guys visit. I enjoy the history. It's sparks the imagination of times of gladiators and of the mystic powers of the ancient gods. I guess that would be the Norse Gods, please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm still learning.
(Baz) I have very similar thoughts when I visit these places. I sit in the amphitheater and imagine who would be sitting next to me and what we would be seeing. The imagination is an amazing tool.
The gods in this area would be the Greek or Roman gods.
Love your channel and the way you take us out for a stroll about with you. You always give good tips and notes on everything your looking at. I did notice that one of your cameras is very blurry on the right half of the screen. I noticed it alot around the 6:30 mark. Almost looks like the right half is trying to go into 3d. But hey, I just got to go on a tour half way around the world from home. So thanks again.
(Baz) Hi Ed, you are correct. Our small Sony handy cam we think has a minuscule scratch on the lens which causes that issue. Sadly that is our 'go to' camera for most of our talky bits and right now we can't afford to replace it or find a place in Turkey where we could get the lens replaced. It drives us nuts when we are editing.
Glad that you enjoy our tours and trips and thanks for watchin and being a subscriber. Cheers. 👍
I love the historical sights. We do the same when travelling Europe - the history is awesome. Knights Templars castles and religious war stories are our favourites. WW11 history also big on the agenda
We think that NOT exploring the region we are in would be unforgivable, especially with the rich history of this area. Cheers.
Turkey should hire you as goodwill ambasadurs
We'll take on that job as long as it comes with 12 months paid leave. Hahahaha 😂
Please wear hats, especially in the summer. Turkish sun is fierce
Hey - been looking forward to this episode.
We are putting together a stand alone full length version of Ephesus. There's a lot to see.
Are you still watching? 🤣🤣 Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Great day for staying indoors and editing today. 🌧 ⛈
I would like it if you were to give some background on contemporary people..Perhaps a known burial site. Making it more anthropological. It could interest those that aren't generally interested in history.
What about the public marble toilets, fully plumbed?
We've seen the stone public toilets at other sites but we didn't notice any at this site. 😀
🇵🇱🙋⛵👍💙💙
Cheers Jan. 👍
:)
We hope that Thailand is still treating you well. 😀
@@SailingABSea Yes Thai Life is much the same as your life style but just on Land lol. Been out of Australia for over 10 years now its not the same place i left behind now sorry to say :(. But one can only hope that things get better there after this Covid.
Yes, it is strange watching home (Australia) from afar as it deals with this moment in time. Victoria is now a fascist police state. So sad.
Can you 2 please convert to Sterling; nobody has a clue how much things cost! :)
(Baz) Hi Mike, there are a few things to take into consideration with your request.
1) If we convert to Sterling for your convenience, that then sets a precedence for people of other countries to request that we also include a conversion to their national currency. With 195 countries on this planet it would get messy pretty quickly.
2) Our funds are held in an Australian bank so we mentally always compare back to Aussie dollars when we convert currency.
3) One of the reasons we are making these videos is for when we are very old and sitting in our rocking chairs we can look back on them and relive our time aboard A B Sea. A fun thing for us to do will be to look back and compare today's Aussie dollar cost of items with what they are costing in 2051.
Cheers.
@@SailingABSea Haha! Cheers for the comprehensive reply Baz! My comment was slightly tongue-in-cheek :)
As for the rocking-chairs, I don't see that. Keep growing (deservedly) this channel and I see you 2 on a 50 foot cat with electric winches in 20 years!
Keep up the great content.
(Baz) I can see the electric winches in our future, but not sure we're prepared to go over to the dark side of a cat. 😂
