For the price, the MY is an amazing deal - esp re supercharging, range, interior space efficiency and tech. However, having had both, I still prefer the Ioniq bc of the softer ride, quieter ride, I much prefer HDA2, CarPlay, and buttons. My kids also prefer the Ioniq back seats. And now w all the discounts, it’s comparable to the MY. But I do hate ccs charging and the poor range.
Ahh definitely good reasons to prefer the Ioniq 5. That's true about the discounts too, in some areas the SEL and SE trims are honestly a better deal than the Y if you are happy with those trims. The limited trim seems to vary more depending on where you live, still seeing some selling near MSRP. What model year was your Y? Do you notice the extra wind noise with the Ioniq 5 compared to the Y on the highway?
Thanks for this review! I was leaning towards the Ioniq but have since then been leaning heavily towards a Tesla model Y long range. This review helps me 🙂
Real world reviews are hard to come by, and yours definitely qualify. I especially appreciate the comments about the range. We have a M 3 standard range and it really can't be used as anything other than an about town/about Bay Area car. I like what you're saying about the M Y's actual freeway range. I was considering an Ioniq 5 or an EV6 but the evidence you present is ... steering me towards the Y. I'll have to ignore Mr. Musk's "quirks". And since I tend to keep my cars for 15+ years, your review makes a difference, thanks.
Glad the review helped! Outside of going with cars with much larger battery capacities like polestar 3 or macan ev, the model y is the range beast of this mid size suv class. My 2023 model y even in the dead of winter in the northeast still sees around 300 miles of highway range as long as I keep it around 65-70mph on the highway. My ioniq 5 and GV60 struggled to see 230-240 miles in similar conditions. There are definitely other pros and cons to weigh but if range, charging and budget are towards the top then the current model y is hard to beat. If you can wait until the juniper refresh model y releases, most expect that to get a modest range increase just like the model 3 refresh did which set it even further apart from its competitors.
Glad to know you are still on your honeymoon with the car! Do check how much energy you actually put into the car versus what it claims you used. The range estimates and power consumption readings are not accurate - in my experience off by 20%. Tesla makes you believe you drive an efficient car but the reality is a little different. Good to know your car doesn’t have any rattle and little wind noise but don’t you notice all the cars and trucks around you? I find the Model Y very noisy in this regard. Not so the Ioniq 5 with its double glazing. In fact, the Ioniq 5 is so well noise insulated that I can’t hear any difference between supposedly quiet summer tires and noisy winter tires. Nor can I hear the electric sound at low speed - unless I open the window.
Haha yes enjoying it still! I'm starting to track the kw being put back in while charging to see how things match up. It may not be exact but my highway efficiency is very impressive, makes me wish the ioniq 5 or gv60 were more aerodynamic. Ioniq 5 is very quiet around town and in the city. Hyundai did a fantastic job with that, but I hear quite a bit of wind noise at highway speeds. In that aspect I find the model Y quieter surprisingly. Hm very interesting, I still hear motor whine starting around 50mph in my ioniq 5. I must just be picking up on that frequency.
Ah the noise. A great observation that I rarely see mentioned. On highway and good roads it's awesome with wind noise/etc. . BUT tire noise or road noise on local roads that aren't great (frankly, most local roads) it has an annoying rumble noise -- at least it's annoying to my ears (the wife doesn't notice it). That's why it's important to test drive on cars on roads you normally take. If you're mostly highway I bet people will be pleasantly surprised by how quiet the Model Y is.
Ya I've really been surprised at how much I like it as a highway driving EV. It's quiet and very efficient. I hear you on that low frequency drone/rumble/reverb, on the plus side the sound system is great so I can drown that out haha
Hi Victor. Followed you from the iOniq5. How have your found needing to look at the big screen to the right on the Tesla 5, compared to the iOniq5 screen, where you look straight ahead? I also have the Head Up Display on the iOniq, and wonder if I would like the Model Y's screen.
It did take a few days or weeks for muscle memory to relearn where to look. But since then I've come to really enjoy the model y center screen. There's just so much more information available to the driver, especially efficiency data which I love looking at throughout every drive. Even the basic speedo and blind spot camera views are big and clear enough that I have not had any issues adjusting from the Ioniq5. The only thing I would want added are true blind spot warnings. Hope that helps!
I'm not surprised by the range as the Ioniq 5 design is not very aerodynamic especially compared to the Model Y. The Ioniq 6 is very aerodynamic, but not nearly as family friendly in terms of storage space.
I guess I was worried after seeing so many owners complain about the range on their Ys haha. I would really love to range test the ioniq 6 on the highway but like you said, it can't carry what the Y can so it's not quite what the majority of buyers are looking for. We'll see how the bigger upcoming egmp SUVs do with range but I have a hard time believing they would do better than the Y on the highway.
Ooh that is a tough one since they are both really compelling. I think I'd give the edge to the Y though for what I find most useful for our family. More storage, more range, more seating if needed, easier charging and better app. I much prefer the ioniq 5 looks, regen paddle system and stuff like ventilated seats, roof shade and 360 camera. But for my family, I find the model y strong suits to be more beneficial. I can deal with some of the Y shortcomings with aftermarket accessories. But I can't make the ioniq 5 bigger or somehow miraculously get 330 miles of range, or suddenly make EA more reliable haha.
Hahaha I keep thinking my budget will never reach that level but who knows! We've been at 3 EVs since we bought the Tesla in June until the Ioniq 5 goes back to Hyundai for good.
They were never able to fix the trunk hatch panel gap: they made it worse, scratched the bumper, made the hatch rattle etc. It spent over 80 days combined in the dealership service bay and at the end of it corporate said they couldn't fix it and would not allow the dealership to try anymore either. Basically rejecting service on the panel gap which they made worse. Then they handed it back to me and said that was it. So we contacted a lawyer and Hyundai offered to buy it back.
Tesla totally nailed the charging network, the ota updates, the phone app and the luggage space. In every other respect, it is such a garbage car. I have the M3, my sister has a MY. Both cars have a harsh ride both in terms of noise and suspension. The car is smart, but not smart enough. The wall away lock is too slow. Give me a button on the door handle. The wiper turns on in bright daylight and doesn't turn on when it drizzles. The auto high beam thankfully drops when a car approaches but takes so long to get back again. By the time it goes back to high beam, another car comes along and drops again. The right beam camera constantly fails to recognize anything at night. In fact all the smart things are like a dimwitted assistant. Phantom braking. Lack of physical buttons makes distracted driving a permanent reality. I don't even bother with voice controls.
Thanks for your honest review comparing the pluses and minuses of your EVs.
You are most welcome!
Great review. I have been waiting for this for a while. Exceptional value on that model Y at the $50k price range minus the government incentives.
Thanks! Ya it really is a great deal for what it can do and how much it costs.
Victor, glad you are enjoying the MY. I told you you would love it!
Thanks Peter, you were right! It's surprised me how much I've enjoyed it.
@@CarsJubilee and how about the sound system? Still the best I’ve ever heard.
We need a review about how usable that 3rd row is!
Sounds good will do!

Where can I get that Tesla logo MY dashboard cover? Thanks for the vids. Just picked up my MY yesterday and have the same sentiments.
Here ya go!

Congrats on the new Y, really is a fantastic ev!
If you had no issues with your Ioniq 5 what so ever, and the Ioniq 5 and Tesla were the same price, would you still choose tesla?
Ooh that is a tough one since they are both really compelling.

How much long range in km ?
I'm seeing over 515km on the highway at over 112km/h.
Hey Vuctor, when are you getting a Lucid Air?
How many cars do youi have now?
Lol

Yes they are! Took a while to reach this point but getting almost everything I paid returned back before factoring in the tax credit we already got.
@@CarsJubilee what happened exactly? I know you mentioned it but don't remember.
