To all the people saying "how is this fun" etc. It's just like painting or gardening etc.. it's the process of designing and making your car thats fun. tbh, i wanted to hear more about the cars, the build and so on. To me, the mechanical part and the work that goes into those little monsters is more amazing than to hear them running around the track.
The engine on the one at 8:40 was designed by Gualtiero Picco. He was a mechanical engineer from italy that made a fortune by designing such engines. I used to see him race his own cars ( designed and machined from solid aluminum and carbon fiber by him in person) they were fast as heck; a 10cc engine car could easily break the 300km/h mark. Unfortunately he passed years ago but i'm pretty sure someone is carrying his legacy.
Oh yeah, they still make great engines. I believe Eduardo Picco is the man now but I could be wrong, been years since I've seen him. I met him at an RC race in Florida years ago. Good guy.
@@Tinkering902 there are a lot of factors linked to their speed. They are fairly light but also their aerodynamics are extremely engineered. Hey. Thanks for that. I'm sitting in the Thai jungle and happened upon your video and it was an eye opener. I'm an old man who grew up in Long Beach, Ca and in 1948 when I was two years old my Dad Wally Wallick smashed the World Speed Record for Class C speed Model Airplanes (10 CC or .61 Cubic inch, same size as the engine in the model in your video) by flying 155.11 MPH. Planes in those days flew on two, 60 foot long steel wires and the pilot stood in the center where the car owner stands in your tether car race and held on to the wires with a U shaped handle that controlled the up and down. They held the handle in one hand and used their opposite arm to lock around the center pole and actually controlled their flying bullet about 1-2 feet off the ground. Thought you might be interested. Good video. Thanks. PS You can see his model plane here along with an album of model plane photos and clippings from the 1940s. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10203614306745743&set=a.3788259272520&type=3&theater
Found the channel because I just learned that 200mph tether car existed and I had to see them but as a car guy I feel right at home around here so you got a sub from me! Thanks for the coverage and content my guys.
It's right next to the Pomona Freeway, and the shooting range across the road. It's noisy. It really gets to you after a while, it's a dream to get back in the car and drive away. I guarantee you, the tether cars are a vast improvement.
I remember back some years ago watching them do control line model airplane speed, the plane would have a metal body pan, while the rest of the plane was hardwood, huge motor up front with a wood prop, you couldn't use a plastic or nylon prop because it could throw a blade, the prop had to be replaced each time you had a run, as it would nick the pavement on landing. Each plane needed to have a pull test before flying, at that time, it was like 90 lbs. See that post in the center ?, needed for airplanes as well, with tether cars, you had a platform to stand on, not so with a speed plane. When they do a run, the plane sits in a dolly and is then started, when released, it gets into the air, the motor 4 cycles for a few seconds while the flyer gets ready, within a few seconds, the motor breaks into 2 cycle and it accelerates rapidly, the flyer throws the control handle on top of the post and literally chases the plane around the post.
No, it's not new. I'm 77 years old and when I met my wife 60 years ago, my future father-in-law was building and racing these. He actually held the world record back in the 1950's. His cars are still coveted by the collectors. Racers today will have heard of Milton (Red) Davis and the Davis-Carlson cars.

Great video, but one question: How do the vehicles accelerate? Will a carburetor slider (possibly be used automatically) be operated or revving without throttle suction? Thanks in advance :)
that track needs to be as flat as can be , one tiny bump and the tethercar goes flying my guess is that the nitro is in a glass bottle because it corrosive to anything else

Why is the platform in the middle so small? Looks like you have to balance on it, what harm in making it a bit bigger so you can stand normally?
They have to change the cable for the different cars running so that may be why.
