Vitamin K has beef a damn miracle for my hereditary dark circles. Nothing else has ever made a dent, but topical vitamin K has reduced them by at least 70% (which is about as good as I think can be expected). Naturopathica made a fantastic K eye cream but recently reformulated, so I’ve been using a random K cream I found at a health food store. It’s called Reviva. I think what ends up working for dark circles depends on why you have them, it’s different for everyone. Mine are a circulation issue, as opposed to allergies or lack of sleep, and K helps with that.
Omg yes! & Tranexamic Acid + Q10! I use the Aroma Naturals vit C,K, Omega & it has Q10. Can sting until youre use to it, so be careful. Been using Numbuzin No. 5 for Tranexamic Acid, but I'm thinking about trying the Anua 4% Tranexamic Acid + 10% Niacinamide. Has anyone tried this?

Very comprehensive! After years of struggle with fillers, creams, lotions, potions, I did the under eye surgery with an ocular plastic surgeon. So pleased with the results, I wish I had done it earlier! Recovery was not that bad either. Just make sure you do your homework on your surgeon and be prepared to wait to get in to see the good ones. They have long waiting lists!!!
I had under eye surgery in high school which fixed my condition for close to 30 years, but in the past couple years it's gotten just as bad as it was before
I am one of the types of people that have had dark under eyes my whole life, like literally since I was 3-4 years old. The best things I have done to lessen my dark circles was treat my allergies (I use nasal spray), using spf 50 pa++++ under my eyes daily with reapplication, and just generally keeping under my eyes moisturized and hydrated with a better skincare routine. It's honestly crazy how much better my dark circles look now at 27 then they ever did through my childhood and teens. I've also abandoned the idea that my under eyes will ever look "perfect" without makeup, like you said it's an unachievable concept, and it allows me to by happy with where they are now!
There was a time when I ate 10 bananas every day and during that time my dark circles completely disappeared. I can't do that anymore but I try to eat as many raw veggies and fruits. They really make a difference but I don't think I ll ever be able to make them disappear again.
For me, I had the trifecta of genetic dark circles, thinning skin due to age, and age-related volume loss. My under eyes have had major improvement from once a year tear trough filler and two rounds of radio frequency and laser vein ablation. Part of my darkness was because I had very visible blue/purple veins that could be seen through my thinning, fair skin. The RF for the veins was painful, but effective. My doctor recommended a third round, but due to the dramatic improvement I saw from two rounds and the painful was of the process, I stopped at two. I can now wear much less concealer, though you are right to say not to expect to be able to go makeup free.
Dark circles under my eyes is my main skin issue, especially as I age, so I really appreciate this thorough education. Learning what I can do to improve this issue from your substantial information in this video will prove beneficial. Definitely the best video on this subject!

I loved this video, while I have eye bags due to my 66 years on the planet I love an ice roller in the morning while having my coffee. Hoping that someday soon they can help bags without surgery but I love the coolness of the roller on my eyes and face as part of my morning routine.
I swear by daily green tea and/or matcha has been THE BEST brightening tip I’ve ever done for my skin. It not only basically totally gets rid of my dark circles, but brightens my overall skin. I drink at least 20 oz daily of (preferably iced) green tea or matcha latte to see results. I’ve done many times of forgetting or not getting around to it, and i notice my skin will look darker within a few days or so. If i get back on green tea/matcha, within a week my dark circles disappear. This has worked SEVERAL times for me over the years!
It could also be that you have a lack of greens and antioxidants in your diet in general… regular consumption of greens and orange/purple veggies is proven to improve skin tone and pigmentation

As always, your videos are so informative. I was pleased to hear you recommend gua sha for lymphatic drainage. I have allergies. I have sinus issues. I have under eye bags. I was only vaguely aware of the possible benefits of lymphatic drainage but never pursued it. I assumed that using an eye cream with caffeine was the answer. Then I discovered face yoga and gua sha massage. I still have bags but they are substantially reduced. And the stress relief of both techniques has been an added benefit.

Charlette Tilbury color corrector first( the peach one) then a tiny bit of concealer works for me. Minimal make up also actually looks better as we age. Most of the RUclips makeup people put too much on and use too many products. A tiny bit looks the best. Also let your moisturizer and sun screen dry before you put on any products. You can make an appointment with a makeup artist at Nordstroms on line and either tip the a buy some of the makeup.
What do you think about Butyloctyl Salicylate being an ingredient in so many sunsceens, including colorescience’s sunscreens? I heard it’s an untested sunscreen filter (concerning 😭) that isn’t regulated as a sunscreen filter, so it’s a sneaky way for clean beauty sunscreen brands to increase SPF ratings in their formulation process with organic filters while still marketing themselves as mineral-only sunscreens (while maligning sunscreens with organic filters in the process)
Just watched lab muffins post on this. Very disturbing stuff. I think I'm going to have my friend in Australia start sending me sunscreens from now on since they're much more tightly regulated. I'm so done with beauty industry deception and flat out lies especially when it comes to something as important as sunscreen.
@@vanbriannemodel Yeah, that video blew my mind. It's awful when you spend so much time doing research and you think you're doing the best thing for your skin (I have rosacea, hence my choice of supposedly inorganic sunscreens) and it turns out you've been deceived. I don't mind it having an "inorganic" filter or something resembling inorganic filters, but it being untested in the quantities it's being used is extremely concerning. I'm also considering Australian sunscreens now... My "holy grail" cheap baby bum spf turned out to have Butyloctyl Salicylate...
@@humankaleidoscope4989 Exactly. We do so much research and think we're following the best advice for our health (even with beauty influencers recommending what they also think are safe products), just to find out what we've been confidently putting on our skin this whole time is exactly what we've been warned not to use. They're just hiding inside loopholes. I also immediately went and checked my favorite sunscreen (R&R serum) and thankfully it doesn't have those ingredients. But now I'm still on the hunt for "next generation" sunscreens from other countries. I feel like I just can't trust the United States anymore to produce genuinely safe and ethically sound products. It's so absurd, and infuriating.
I developed them after several intensely stressful weeks with little sleep when I moved myself and kids out of the family home. Was black like I’d been punched. 6 months later it’s barely improved despite sleep, improved diet, quitting smoking, and using creams.
How many hours sleep do you need to not get eye bags and dark circles like what is the minimum you generally need. Average adult needs 5 hours of sleep to function but will that much gove you bags? If you do have them how long do they take to go away with sleep?
7 is usually a good number however everyone is different. If you sleep deeply for 6 hours, then that’s fine. I think they say generally 7-9 hours. You are the best judge of your face though! Good luck.
I was born with my under eye circles. No joke I blend in with the white part of a volleyball net. I’m the same exact color. When that’s what Mother Nature gives, you, you’re gonna have dark spots under your eyes your entire life.
Do fade creams work on birthmarks? I have a dark birthmark on my forehead and it goes around my eye. It looks like a black eye. I was curious to know if there’s any options to help remove or lighten it. Thanks in Advance!
THD ascorbic acid has been great for lightening up my under eye baggage! Of course theres still some pigmentation, but I'm really surprised by how effective its been! I didn't even buy it for my racoon eyes, total bonus 😊
My cosmetic nurse friend has translucent under eyes like mine… he reckons he's tried everything and colour-correcting makeup is the best solution 😂. Considering how often he espouses the benefits of procedures, it was quite a suprise to hear him say that 🤯!
I had dermal fillers in my 20's and i didnt see any difference, my eyes where still dark. Though i did think that when i had makeup on, it looked better with the fillers than without. I suspect my dark circles are from thin skin and hollowing.
are there any treatments for hemosiderin? topical, OTC, Rx, medical devices or surgeries? i’ve even tried lasers w limited success as the hemosiderin and my melanin are too similar for lasers to differentiate. any ideas would be sincerely appreciated, thank you for this comprehensive video dr ellis. 💛
Hi there! Many years ago, my dad had some sort of surgical procedure that he described as removing the broken down red blood cells/their leaking components from under the skin of his undereyes. His staining was so bad, he looked like he had two black eyes. The procedure made a tremendous difference and his undereyes still look good today. I haven't seen anything similar to this type of procedure while researching hemosiderin staining (which I also have) and was hoping this video would mention what that procedure is. It definitely wasn't laser treatment and was resolved in one surgical procedure.

Hi, Dr Ellis! Can you please clarify if skin tends to heal faster after subsequent microneedling sessions? My skin was horrendous after my first session (extreme redness, sandpaper texture, peeling) and it took 5 days to heal completely, but I just had my fourth treatment, and I noticed that my skin has bounced back a lot faster after each one, despite my aesthetician using deeper needle depths (2mm now) and making more passes across my face. My skin just looks a little tender after each treatment nowadays, and it looks back to normal after 3 days. I suspect that the skincare products I'm currently using have also contributed to my skin recovering faster than before, but I'm just curious if skin can get "accustomed" to microneedling?
I've had this exact same experience! My 4th treatment is coming up. Are you seeing results? I have pretty bad pitted scarring and I'm still waiting for it to improve more noticeably.
@@svpate5 Thank you for sharing! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I thought I was going insane. I hope Dr Ellis can clarify if this can happen as well. And yes, I have gotten good results from microneedling so far. It's officially been 6 months since I got my first treatment in March and my scars have noticeably improved. My boxcar scars have improved the most. Most of them have smoothened so much that they don't have a defined edge anymore. Basically, they don't even look like boxcars anymore! I am looking forward to seeing more improvement over the next few months because it generally takes 6-12 months to notice the most improvement from microneedling.
@@SakuraPinkPeach interesting! Glad you're seeing such great results! My derm has me doing a treatment every month for 6 months, which seems more accelerated.
@@svpate5 Thank you! I hope you get great results from it! It's actually advised to have one session every 4-6 weeks, but my personal schedule was horrendous after my first treatment, so I had to delay microneedling for three months. I've been getting it monthly now. But, tbh, the fact that I've gotten the results that I have 6 months after my first isolated session is very encouraging to me, which is why I'm excited for my following sessions to take full effect.
Dark circles are natural for those with deep set eyes, because of the sadowing, so I don't know why we hate them so much. I rather keep them than doing anything like fillers and stuff cause I rather keep my eyesight then go blind for perfection.
I can't get rid of, or even COVER, my dark circles. They appeared suddenly last year. I've tried high quality Vitamin C for over a year, and Retinaldehyde cream for eyes, and a defuffy-lightener for eye area. I then resorted to straight lemon juice. Maybe they're lighter. Hard to say. But they're still there. They are less visible when my eyes are not puffy, which happens when I clear my sinuses. I wonder if it's blood vessels.
Darkness on the inner part of the eye socket is what I need help with. It’s due to one of the first conditions you talked about…veins or arteries showing through the skin. You didn’t really give suggestions for this issue. Is make up the only option? They are so bad that even heavy concealer can’t disguise them. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Occasionally lasers may be helpful, but it’s a tricky area and sometimes the vessels are too deep to adequately treat, unfortunately. I think having a consultation with cosmetic dermatologist and/or plastic surgeon would give you the most guidance here!

Ah yes! Meant to include that! So hydroquinone, alpha arbutin, hydroxy acids, retinoids, etc can help with true pigment but seem to be less effective under the eyes than on other parts of the face. Still worth a go though but just being mindful of the potential irritation on this delicate area!

Best dermatologist
Any budget selections?
I developed them after several intensely stressful weeks with little sleep when I moved myself and kids out of the family home. Was black like I’d been punched. 6 months later it’s barely improved despite sleep, improved diet, quitting smoking, and using creams.
Maybe check with the primary care. Such excessive stress can trigger gland problems (could be yr thyroid). Hope you find your balance soon
I use caffeine for my puffiness and it helps every time
So informative. Thanks
Hi Dr Ellis, what do you think about topical Vitamin K for under eyes ? (specifically for veins)
I’m not dr Sam (obviously) but I tried a Vitamin K cream and it did absolutely nothing for my broken capillaries
I tried this as well. No help whatsoever.
I wonder if the use is more to prevent having more veins forming around the eyes rather than making the existing ones disappear..
Thank you for all this information 😊
Can you do a video on eyes that are simply puffy? Both lid and under eye. Please?
Do fade creams work on birthmarks? I have a dark birthmark on my forehead and it goes around my eye. It looks like a black eye. I was curious to know if there’s any options to help remove or lighten it. Thanks in Advance!
Just priced the colorescience eye cream… gasp!
THD ascorbic acid has been great for lightening up my under eye baggage! Of course theres still some pigmentation, but I'm really surprised by how effective its been! I didn't even buy it for my racoon eyes, total bonus 😊
legit perspective
My cosmetic nurse friend has translucent under eyes like mine… he reckons he's tried everything and colour-correcting makeup is the best solution 😂.
Considering how often he espouses the benefits of procedures, it was quite a suprise to hear him say that 🤯!
Any tips on why you’d have dark circles and night sweats?
@@lacey_heather thanks for sharing Lacey. i’m glad to hear your dad recovered so well. i’ve never heard of this either, but it gives me something keep an eye out for. cheers!
@@OneGulshan Of course! Good luck to both of us in figuring it out! 😆
You really are the best.
I get them spontaneously throughout the day, accompanied by dizziness. Makes me crazy.
I live in the Bay Area is there any oculus surgeon you can recommend. I have fatty under eyes. Thank you 🙏🏼
Can you please make a video on microneedling PRF for skin of color to treat melasma and wrinkles. Is it worth it??
Hi Dear Dr Sam Ellis ☺️ Thank For Your Very True & Knowledgeable Message 💖 The Most Precious Is Your Explanation,The Way Of Speaking Looks Like TWEETY🐥😂 Well Am Very Thankful To You For Your Such An Important Message... MAY GOD BLESS YOU WITH HEALTH, HAPPINESS, PATIENCE, SUCCESS, 💖 AMEN 💖
Amen Amen hallelujah! I am 36yr old i have had notice my eye bags since last 4 months and even i don't have money to treatment so sir with your benign consideration and help please suggest me how to remove eye bags naturally 🙏 please
I ruined my under eyes…
Tanning in 2009 hated wearing goggles
And now at 35 eyes ruined
Dark swollen bags …
Do you ever suggest under eye patches?
I can't get rid of, or even COVER, my dark circles. They appeared suddenly last year. I've tried high quality Vitamin C for over a year, and Retinaldehyde cream for eyes, and a defuffy-lightener for eye area. I then resorted to straight lemon juice. Maybe they're lighter. Hard to say. But they're still there. They are less visible when my eyes are not puffy, which happens when I clear my sinuses. I wonder if it's blood vessels.
People always think I’m exhausted because of my dark circles lol
You are so pretty
Are there ocular plastic surgeons you would recommend? Particularly in the midwest if possible.
thank you so so much x
Mine is genetic if i pull the under eye skin little i see alot of blood vessels its so hyperpigmented
Thank you! Your videos are very informative and you keep it to the specific issue. Keep them coming!
Jelly roll….George Clooney. And me. Good company I guess. Thank you for the thorough and realistic presentation. Very interesting and while I know you are a board certified dermatologist, I am so impressed with your effortless pronunciation of the multi syllable scientific words!
What about thin skin under eye? What causes that and how to treat it?
if i am looking at an eye care product and looking at the ingredient list how do find growth factors? what are they?
What about we cannot afford the laser just a cream instead
White with dark circles. Help.
I have Sjogrens Syndrome and constantly have to use PF eye drops. How does this effect the eyelid skin?

I’m of Scandinavia descent, so there really isn’t anything you can do for me 😂.
Nothing is help so far, but I may try some of your products that you recommend. Thanks.
under eye is the secret of youthful appearance
Hypothyroidism bingo. Insomnia 2.
I don't have dark circles I just have eye bags, heavy eye bags. I blame using my phone.
You cannot remove dark circles.
I have never seen a more healthy looking person than you what do you eat😂
No creams work I have allergies

Hello Dr. Sam, your content is super amazing and your professional work must be inspiring alot of young aspirants. However, you seem to be inconsistent in the content posting. The only thing that helped my dark circles was going vegan
This was an excellent breakdown. However, you didn’t speak about pigment busting/reducing skincare products & their efficacy on the various derived dark circles. Also am curious about growth factors on skin care… I get scared when I see that listed and steer clear🫣
Ah yes! Meant to include that! So hydroquinone, alpha arbutin, hydroxy acids, retinoids, etc can help with true pigment but seem to be less effective under the eyes than on other parts of the face. Still worth a go though but just being mindful of the potential irritation on this delicate area!
Very informative. Thank you.
