Cairns first hosted an ironman distance triathlon in 2011 - although it was branded Challenge in 2011 and yes, the Captain Cook Highway was closed down for the race, etc. When the Ironman brand took over the race in 2012 it was the SECOND ironman distance triathlon race in Cairns.
