The author experienced being shut-in and depression himself so he nailed these things real good
Your reactions are so heart warming and I love it. People can say what they want but this anime is the best anime in term of the Arts, Character Developments, and Musics. OMG! ❤❤❤
At the end Rudy was thinking with his current voice not with his old one... the detail....
Yeah he let go of his past life and accepted who he is now.
The author interview was very insightful around the philosophy and mindset around Mushoku Tensei. There wasn't any spoilers and it makes sense why the beginning had so many controversial elements to it. My favorite part was when he said something along the lines of "if you have a Rudy in your life and they want to change, give them a chance"
The most poetic part of Rudy changing in this life is that he decides to change in order to go and save Zenith, his mother. While the thing that got him kicked out of the house and ultimately killed in his old life was that he didn't even go to his own mothers funeral.
So the season starts with him being selfish in a way, letting his trauma and pain become more important to him than his own mothers death. And then it ends with him deciding that his (new) mothers life is worth more than any suffering he would have to endure.
Beautiful way to come full-circle =)
This episode hit me hard having dealt with depression and bullying cuz of weight in school myself I loved all your thoughts and takes on this series thank you for reacting and sharing your thoughts with us!
I heard that the author was one of the scriptwriters for this episode. And I don't know if it was one of their goals, but honestly this episode is a good depression awareness material. You can see Rujierd, Eris, and Roxy talking about how amazing and strong Rudy is, all the while Rudy himself was being swallowed by depression, and it happens sometimes in real life, the people we think who are strong and can handle all things in life, are actually the one who's suffering the most. Anyway, what an incredible journey, I wish we will get a season 2 confirmation and honestly it would be nice to have two cours again like we did this year because I like that we started the year with Mushoku Tensei, and ended the year with it too. Definitely my anime of the year and for me the best anime to come out since Hunter X Hunter. It evokes so much emotions because its so realistic even though its set in a fantasy world.
Honestly I emphatize with rudy so much, as someone who dealt with depression as well, i felt that "i would if i could". Sometimes you just gotta cry a lil bit, and sometimes you gotta force yourself to do something, so one can be better. But hey people with depression or anxiety that can afoord it, go to a pshyquiatrist or phsycologist
Also if you cant afford it, force yourself to exercise, and eat well, a lot of vegetables and fruits, and also plenty of sleep during the night.

Rudy is 13 now, When he was with Sylphie, they both were 8 (or Syphie was 10 like Eris), So Sylphie is now 13 or 15 so it does make sense that she looks lot older (if you didn't notice, both Rudy and Eris's designs have been constantly growing older, if you look at part 1 episodes you would be taken aback by how much Rudy and Eris look younger).
I think Rudy left to tutor Eris (who was 9) when he was 7, spent 3 years in the capital and spent 2 1/2 - 3 years travelling. Eris just turned 15 a few days ago and Rudy is almost 13 years old, Sylphy is the same age as Rudy but the after credit scene is 2 years into the future, so she and Rudy would both be 15 at this time.

Just subscribed! I loved your reaction to the finale because of how genuine it was and how you related to Rudy's state and feelings.
What I liked the most of this series is how it is not just about Rudy being extremely OP and beating up all the "bad guys" (although he is very powerful), but about him changing as a person for the better, not repeating the errors of his past life, and changing everyone's lives too in this new world. The impact that Rudy has had in Paul, Zenith, Ruijerd and Eris, just to name a few, has been enormous. I'm eagerly waiting for season 2 to see how Rudy continues evolving and gow the story unfolds.
By the way, maybe another comment already points it out, but the guy and the blonde girl in the post-credits scene were both present at the end of episode 14, when Eris's grandpa was executed.

As someone who went through depression, the strong feeling i got from when Rudeus took his step out of his "room" is huge. The tears went up for a moment.
When you started giving advices, to do something no matter how trivial it is, i kinda started wishing someone told me that too before (or maybe someone did and i was too buried in my own depression to properly catch the message...). I realized the message from Monokuma of all people (i like the characters but not a fan of Danganronpa's concept btw), and it was the player who pinpointed how there were some truth in the statement and explained their opinion.

While, it might "seem" that Rudy's Parents from his Previous Life were supporting him, but actually they were just giving him Standard Reply, and just kept saying to "try hard on his own" (like some random person would give to a person going through depression). I mean, they were his parents, they should have understood him more as well. But they never really tried to communicate or talk to him or go to him to support him, because they were busy with the lives of their other children who were much more successful than Rudy (in the Novel, its mentioned that Rudy was a average Student prior to that incident, while his Siblings were all Top Ranker types).
The biggest issue that Rudy in his previous life was suffering from was the fact he was punished and humiliated because of "doing the right thing" and no one came to help him (and instead made fun of him), and the only word of encouragement he got later were some "empty words".
Also, considering they never mention whether those bullies were punished or not, it would highly indicate that the parents failed to do anything against them. And its mentioned in the Novel that, his parent mostly didn't help him out much later on, because they were worried about the future of their others Kids, like the younger siblings who would be studying be in the same school, and a "controversy" regarding the older brother would cause issue with there life.

I enjoyed your reaction and I was thinking this as I was hearing your post reaction comments: , As you said, the whole season was summarized in the phrase of boreas family butler: "You are not the only one suffering".. All this time was about that. Rudy suffering. But we all suffer. He didn´t want to move one. And that happens more often than not. Depression and despair. And the beatiful closing of the season, is that Rudeus is moving on. And in their own way, Eris, and everyone else.

From the novels in reference to the end of Episode 23 - Rudy is on his way to Sylphie though he doesn't know she is there he is merely seeking clues about where his mother is; Roxie and her party are on their way to find Zenith and will become trapped in the city as well. Rudy and Sylphie will meet and then go to the labyrinth city to find Zenith too. Eris continues to train, maturing and realizes she is ready to stand with Rudy again..
Sylphie fell from the sky when teleported and was severely wounded though she did heal herself, this is why her hair turns white. She becomes the bodyguard of a Princess and escorts her to the Ranoa Magic Academy where they both enroll. This is where she is in the post credit scene, she is also the only other magic caster to use voiceless incantations like Rudy.
The post credit scene is a little over two years after they went their separate ways, Rudy is almost 15 and taller, Sylphie is now 15. She matured faster than Rudy which is why she appears older.
Eris now 17 is still completely in love with Rudy and desperate to find him.
I have watched anime for a long time, we rarely get this kind of character writing and world building in any fiction.
Mushoku Tensei is a blessing and bless the author for existing.

I was sure the episode would be 50/50 Eris and Rudeus POVs, seeing the other characters was nice and all, but Eris POV gives her a lot of depth, and complements Rudeus experience
Basically, she was restless because she doesnt really contributes to the party, being carried by Rudeus and Ruijerd, and now that she only has Rudeus left, she wondered why exactly can she contribute to him
During the demon continent arc, half of her cheery attitude was out of genuine love for adventure, but the other half was Eris putting on a cheerful face to lighten the burden on Rudeus, and assumed she should become stronger as thats the thing she can do, so she would wake up at night for extra training
Then, when she gained some confidence Rudeus got the demon eye and crushed her, then she kept training even harder and regained her confidence, only to be crushed even worse by the dragon god
Even if Eris is stronger than average, she was useless against the dragon god, and in that fight she realized how much Rudeus holds back, to the point he could hurt an enemy even Ruijerd could not touch, which made her wonder how fast he would have returned had it not been for having to escort Eris back home
She also got very impressed by how Rudeus could stand in front of Orsted and remain calm, while Eris and Ruijerd froze in fear, and when Rudeus began practicing the magic he copied from Orsted, Eris could only be scared at the memory while Rudeus was looking for ways to progress even further
Back when Rudeus turned 10, Eris' mother Hilda dressed her in a nightgown and send her to Rudeus (yeah, it was not the dad who did that), telling Eris that if she bedded Rudeus he would never leave her, which is important because with her violence Eris had driven away all other suitors interested on her, as well as her previous tutors and many servants, like the guy who staged the kidnapping because Eris had beaten him a lot of times
The Boreas family recognized that Rudeus was Eris' best chance at a happy relationship, and Eris herself realized there are not many people that can put up with her temperament
Thats the real reason she went to Rudeus that night, to tie him down to herself, as Eris was very aware she just had to keep pushing and Rudeus would eventually give in, and after that Rudeus would never leave her
This is why Eris feels she took advantage of Rudeus
Eris had no intention of going away, but when Rudeus fell asleep, Eris hugged him and she realized how small Rudeus is compared to herself, and felt ashamed at depending so much on someone smaller without trying to contribute to him, and realized she didnt want to face another fight where Rudeus got hurt while she could do nothing
So Eris decided to go train at *[SPOILER],* but feared that Rudeus would convince her not to go if she told him, instead she just left leaving behind that note, assuming Rudeus would understand her reasoning, because he knows everything and can do anything
Contrasting both POVs would have been impactful, but i guess there was a need to tie up ends with the other characters
The season ended but there is still an OVA coming next april, about Eris adventure hunting goblins, which happened that time when Rudeus fought with Paul, there are important side characters to be introduced there
The next arc is perfect for a movie, which may or may not happen, but fingers crossed
At the final scene Silphy & Co. are in a snowy place, and Zanoba is arriving at a snowy place, Paul told Rudeus to search for Zenith on the north side of the continent, which is a snowy place where the magic academy is located
I agree I wish they added some of Eris' POV in the 2 eps before this

Pretty poetic how his first step was not for himself but for Zenith, he didn't care about what would happen to him, but he really cared about her, she was his last anchor to the world because he knew she was still out there and that he had to help her.
Really caring about someone else translates to strength in the face of adversity. Strength enough to crawl out of those pits of despair to help them and as a result helping oneself.

Sylphie was teased earlier at the execution of Eris's grandfather, she was one of the people watching
2nd reactor that noticed the subtle age difference shown on these episode.(sylphys age and rudys current)
Those of us who struggle to fit in, those of us who have trouble belonging, those of us who struggled with depression. We might actually find it therapeutic how that piece of human excrement struggled with his second chance. My favourite story after Dune.

More or less correct, you'll learn more about what happened to Sylphy and the other 2 after the teleportation incident in the next season. But definitely get ready for a slower pace since the next arc is gonna go back to its roots as slice of life. But after it is all gas no breaks, and hopefully the studio will continue this impeccable adaptation.
