- Dive into the heart of Zhengzhou, a city that marries cutting-edge architecture with deep-rooted culinary traditions. My stay at the Holiday Inn Riverside in a developing business district highlighted the modernity Zhengzhou offers, juxtaposed with a unique architectural style that felt both familiar and novel.
The culinary journey began with traditional barbecue, introducing me to Zhengzhou's rich flavors, notably the beef neck, which marked the start of an extensive exploration of local cuisine.
The trip to the Zhongyuan Tower, the world's second-largest steel tower, was unforgettable, offering panoramic views of a city once known as a "ghost city," now vibrant and full of life. This experience, coupled with the vast urban landscape, showcased Zhengzhou's remarkable transformation.
Further culinary adventures at a locally recommended restaurant allowed me to delve into the diversity of Zhengzhou's cuisine, from savory meatballs to sweet yams, each dish revealing stories of the region's culinary heritage.
The city's design, with its spacious avenues and green spaces, contrasts with the bustling nightlife that comes alive with bars, music, and a welcoming community atmosphere. This blend of modern living and traditional values, along with the warm hospitality received, paints Zhengzhou as a city of resilience, ambition, and potential.
Zhengzhou's journey from a "ghost city" to a metropolis of 15 million people embodies its promising future, leaving me optimistic about its continued growth and the genuine warmth of its residents.

Zhengzhou had 622mm of rainfall within 24 hours. That's 1/3 of its regular amount for a whole year. To give you a perspective, the recent German flood had 182mm on its worst day. In the 2018 Japanese flood, the biggest single-day record was around 300mm, and the UN even provided international aids to Japan. In some vids online, the flood level goes from ankle-high to waist-high in about 20 mins in certain regions.
As it says in the official press conference, this is indeed a once in a thousand-year disaster in an inland region.
Unfortunately it was equal to its annual rainfall.
I bet China saved more lives than any of the other floods but you will never hear that narrative from Western media.

Building all these super blocks and office parks is what caused the water to have no where to go and so flooded the city.
I'I'll go there just for that restaurant, its concept is stunning and the food looks amazing.
An ancient tomb was exposed in Zhengzhou due to this unprecedented flooding and it dates back to 2000 years ago in the Han Dynasty. This just reveals that the last time we had a flooding of such scale was at least 2000 years ago.

Like those guys I used to think it was the throat because 喉 hou literally means throat in Chinese.
I've heard bad things about Zhengzhou (on Reddit), but I don't know... the city looks OK to me. Of course, I currently live in Guiyang, Guizhou Province. Although the weather is great and the environment is green, it's not as developed as I had hoped.
I had a good time. Every city has good things and bad things, but during my week there it was lovely.

Enjoyed your video having lived in Zhengzhou on and off for the last ten years, but staying in 5 star hotels and wandering around CBD isn't visiting Zhengzhou, you should have gone to the older parts to see real local life.
