      Mission Hill was the ur example of a show that was on the wrong network for the wrong audience. If anything, it deserved the same treatment Home Movies got, being completely rescued from a channel that didn't know what it was doing to a cable channel where that exact tone of show would have been more welcome. MH had NO business being on the WB, but would have been a perfect fit for Comedy Central right along side Dr. Katz, or if adult swim was more established at the time.

    • @motherplayer
      @motherplayer Год назад

      Brings me back to remembering "Kitty Bobo" from the What A Cartoons Lineup and remembering how surprised I was that the show followed a bunch of young adults rather than kids or teens and how interesting that perspective was. Alas, from what I heard, it did win the contest, but was sabotaged by the network because they didn't know how to market it, so they went with KND.

    • @mightyfilm

      @@motherplayer As a KND fan, I'd unfortunately call that a canon event.   • @mightyfilm
    @mightyfilm Год назад +31

    I'm glad to hear Baby Blues getting the love (or at least like) it deserves. For years it was basically a punching bag of a show that was compared negatively to Family Guy, and an insult to the comic strip. And yes, it is a cartoon that was very much a product of the late 90's-early 00's adult animation boom. But there was a lot of heart to go along with the adult comedy and there was a lot of familial love in this series. Oblongs and Mission Hill both became cult hits long after they ended, but Baby Blues just got completely forgotten at best. Though I wonder if The PJ's counts since it did originate on Fox and just migrated to WB. I remember when they had an episode with Jackie Chan in it and they used it to promote the Kid's WB Jackie Chan Adventures cartoon. Talk about your wild demographics swing.

    Tumbleweeds are super dry and he probably forced them into his engine block.

    I found out about the Oblongs when I was staying at my friend Aidan’s house when we were kids, and we stumbled upon it on Adult Swim when we were surfing channels (back when it would air reruns on that channel). I was intrigued by it and I ended up watching some episodes where it was pretty funny tbh. I stumbled upon Mission Hill when watching a video in 5th grade, and I ended up falling in love with the show. It sucks both shows got cancelled early. If they were brought back today they would be instantly popular.
    I hope your next video will be you talking about both Star Wars Clone Wars shows (2003 and 2008 respectively), and discussing why you think the 2003 one is better as I’m a fan of both shows (even if I was born in 2003 😂).

    The WB, channel 11.
    The network debuted before my 5th birthday and it has given alot, it represented young audiences much better than its follow up and had a way better asthethic to boot.
    Considering that the WB was the 6th rated network, it had much more than the regular top rated networks to see at the time along with UPN.
    Their attempts at animation was pretty unique during the heyday of prime time animation in non cable stations.
    I definitely remembered Baby Blues when it aired on Friday of summer 2000, I remembered eating off brand froot loops at the time too.
    I still like it style and how it holds up still.
    Ahh, The Oblongs, that series aired on Sundays, but should've taken enough advantage there as well, it should've aired at 9pm, they would've acquired the Simpsons, KOTH audience that aired at 8.
    Alright, Mission Hill! That series was way ahead of its time in style and scope, I recently attended an event featuring the creators at a townhouse and there was much in discussion to be had with the series and its influences, MH still stays unique of its style and substance up to now. I noticed something, the BG's of MH is lightly akin to Jackie Chan's Adventures BG design.
    Invasion America, I spent nights watching this on its original airing, I thought it was going to air on Kids wb and that was a prime time sneak peek.
    There was also one more, the 3rd season of The PJs, but I guess it was transfered from Fox and not a true The WB original.

      The WB and UPN had a lot of imported shows from other networks. That's what partly contributed to their fast rise. Fox rise in the 90s gave them the keys to success and they went after much of the same blue collared, urban, teen and kids audience. And in some aspects they catered to some of those demo's even better than Fox.

    okay. so about the tumbleweed part...
    it's dry and hot there as is. and in a chase you push the car's engine, which makes it hot. tumbleweed being dry and flammable, you can hear the wheels scraping against them, while they are stuck under the car. so they catch on fire, which in tandem with the hot engine make the cables and fuel-tubes catch on fire under the hood. all the more easier, since the air intake meant to cool the motor will fuel it with air. and ofc you stop and get out, if you see your car catching on fire.
    goes to show the dude has a good head on his shoulder to look at tumbleweeds and connect the dots about it being dry and flammable, using it to stop a car.

    Need to point out that the algorithm brought me here, it's not ALWAYS evil. You have yourself an amazing channel, dude. I work from home and watch a lot of long form content, and this video made me smile. Keep up the good work, man! Definitely going to check out your Patreon.

    Mission Hill was and still is one of THE MOST amazing animated series ever made! im one of the fortunate owners of the full DVD box set. though it lacks the original licensed music, its still amazing to this day. i remember seeing ads for it on the WB back in the late 90s and was DYING to watch the show. didnt happen until it came on Adult Swim in the 2000s... and to this day, im still hooked on it (being 41). the few storyboard episodes that have popped up on RUclips are so much fun to see as the writers of the show were really pushing to keep constant evolution of the characters going. its just really too bad that its following didnt hit until well after the show was finished.

As someone who also loves late 90's/early 2000's media, it's always refreshing to see someone make these videos and do it right! ♥ You and Pan Pizza seriously know what's up and I'm so glad I came across your channel!
    Much love! ♥

    I remember the primetime animated shows that aired on The WB such as Mission Hill, Baby Blues and The Oblongs and UPN had two animated series such as Dilbert and Home Movies. Cartoon Network picked up Home Movies, Baby Blues, Mission Hill and The Oblongs and aired it on it’s nighttime block adult swim between 2001-2004/2005

    Yeah, the Invasion America thing was kinda odd. In 2016 Universal ended up buying out DreamWorks Animation making NBC/Universal or Comcast the owners of Invasion America. Which is funny because back in 1993 Universal Animated Studios run by Jeff Siegel tried to make a mature animated TV series of their own called Exosquad. And got Playmates to make the toys for them. And mostly mild violence because Exosquad was put into the Saturday Morning Cartoon timeslot, But that didn't stop the huge amount death scenes or the extremely adult subjects like War is Hell, racism, the horrors of war, and losing loved ones in war. And all anyone talks about is those toys these days. And people still think Playmates made Exosquad even though Exosquad was created under Universal Animated Studios, and as of 2016 was merged with DreamWorks Animation which means that DreamWorks Animation now owns Exosquad and Invasion America. And they don't want anybody to know about it. Exosquad is on the Peacock streaming service under the kids section but not Invasion America. And neither is on NBC/Universal or Comcast is on their European streaming service Sky Network. Oh, and Jeff Siegel was immediately fired from Universal Animated Studios right when Exosquad which ran for two seasons.

    I would say if Adult Swim premiered a little sooner the WB shows would have lasted much longer but then again their shows were made on the cheaper side thus no money to renew the shows. Maybe that's why Home Movies was renew thanks to its art style. Who knows? In the age of reboots/revivals, the WB shows can only rely on luck if the higher ups are interested enough to bring them back; the only question would be where to put them?

    man watching this really makes me wanna revisit mission hill. i didn't realize as a kid just how gorgeous of a cartoon it is. something about a lot of stuff from the 2000s, the bold line work, the pinks and greens and purples...think gorillaz. it was just a whole vibe, and i've been sorta seeing it make a comeback lately. that style definitely inspired my own work i've been doing lately.

    We didn’t have WB when the first three shows were airing because we only had satellite where I lived, but I got to see them when Adult Swim picked them up a few years later and they become some of my favorite animated shows. All three are pretty unique among adult animation and I would love to see another Baby Blues or Mission Hill-style show again someday. (Undergrads too)

    I absolutely loved The Oblongs, but I saw it later on Adult Swim.
    I remember really enjoying Mission Hill. I saw it on MTV. For some reason the Hot Pants episode has lived in my head for 20 some-odd years, lol.
    I've never heard of Invasion Earth, either. Looks like ALIENS meets Titan AE meets Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, lol.
