    I used to hang out at the old Athens airport with my buddies, drinking cold ones, in the summers a very long time ago. There was a spot that wasn't fenced off, just before the runway, and thus airplanes would fly just over our heads. Good memories.

    Great shots, a bit reminiscent of Hanover to be honest. All the efforts are excellent but it is true that Aegean stands out both in terms of accuracy and smoothness. Especially the Aegean coming in from Rome, the guy went straight to the center despite having to approach with a full opposite lock. The same goes for his colleagues arriving from Belgrade and Istanbul. These guys really give a lesson, probably because they play on "home ground". Lufthansen is also excellent, but he classically dropped it, as if it is somehow in their protocol to touch down in a kind of abrupt way, although straight. In any case, we thank all the operators and crews plus the creator of this footage.

      Well commented, same thoughts here. And yes, "betont aufsetzen" (means " performing an accentuated touchdown") in gusty conditions, especially on wet or contaminated runways, is a thing here... But not just LH uses that procedure.

    • @topofdescent
      @topofdescent 2 года назад

      Just adding a quick explanation if I may: The main reason for "not greasing it" when windgusts are prevailing (especially when the runway is contaminated with slush or standing water, as mentioned before) is the accelerated (ideally immediate) response of the air/ground sensors (the so-called "weight on wheels sensor", mostly combined with a predetermined sensed speed of wheelspin - depending on A/C type) which allows for the groundspoilers to deploy and thus lets most of the A/C's weight settle on the main gear within seconds, making the wheelbrakes most effective and providing for both increased lateral control and braking performance. Additionally, it minimizes the risk of hydroplaning and/or skidding laterally on a slippery runway in crosswind conditions since firm contact with the actual runway surface by "cutting through" the layer of whatever contamination right away is key. Passengers may not always appreciate the accentuated touchdown, but if they knew, they would most likely appreciate the increased safety margin resulting from it 🙂
      EDIT: typo

  • @robertwalsh5461
    @robertwalsh5461 2 года назад +2

    Those highly skilled pilots make it look like they do it every day…oh, wait they do!
    Actually, my friend’s dad was an American AL’s Captain who had a very highly sought after route, only the most senior pilots get…ORD to LAX to OGG and back. He retired around 1988 after finding himself a “dishy stew” and made my broheim Paul. In the 70s, 80s he was making huge money; $275K plus!
    Inflation may make that seem not so large but back then a loaded Cadillac was like $8K (maybe $20K in ‘88.)
    However, he had to (FAA mandate) only go to “work” 19 days/month! So he only worked 2/3rds of what any normal person does and considering that he loved what he was doing…he didn’t work a day in his career! No souls lost and no aircraft damaged!

      In an airliner is a forward slip out of the question for a crosswind landing?

    • @gap9992
      @gap9992 2 года назад

      @@jimarcher5255 The technique to hold the plane in line with the RW centreline with into wind wing low and opposite rudder is called a side slip - which I too find a bit counter-intuitive but that's what it's called. ( I do understand why but I still think Forward Slip / Side Slip names should be reversed !LOL). But you are right that airliners can't do a side slip due to wingspan so the preferred procedure is to kick the plane straight when just above the RW with rudder but holding the wings level.
      These days aircraft gear can manage lateral landing loads so pilots just stick it on still crabbed and then straighten up - as most of the pilots did in the video

    • @CaptMeMo_350
      @CaptMeMo_350 2 года назад +1

      @@jimarcher5255 it is possible to hit the engine cowl or wing tip to runway thats why airliners approach wings level and crabbed in to wind. you should maintain that crab angle until touch down. offcourse little rolls are acceptable to maintain centerline alignment. just before touchdown you kick rudder to align aircraft nose with runway centerline to protect landing gear structure from excessive lateral forces. most airliners can land with 5-7 degrees crab angle.

      Will you accept an invitation to give some lessons to these pilots, in order to improve their landing technique? If you were a professional pilot, you should consider that all landings were safe in these extreme conditions. Such guys criticizing from their couch, get their underwear 🩲 dirty, just by watching these videos!

      @@AEROZAN1 invitation accepted, 19800 flight hours, senior examiner on A320/330/340/350 and 40 years of airline experience as a captain an instructor, I witness firsthand the decline in flying skills of our younger pilots and believe me, some of these landings are scary because of the lack of skill to handle crosswind by their pilots. Other landings show expertise but unfortunately , not many.

      @@cockpitviews I could accepted your experience and your comments in the debriefing, if you were a crew member in these flights. You are not informed about the actual conditions and the phenomena caused by the surrounded terrain (shear, downdrafs etc) in the specific airport. If I had your experience I would pay respect to my colleagues,(and remain silent) as they were trying to do their job, in these extreme conditions, instead of advertising my thousands of hours (if any). Have a nice day CAPTAIN!

    I’m not a pilot but I’d just like to say that the BA pilots boys/ girls handled it best , all the other’s were effete and overly dramatic.
