To me, this season was a necessity. It's not what we wanted, but it's absolutely what we needed. The way that I see this show is as a healing journey for our protagonist. But it's only in seeing and lingering at his rock-bottom, in seeing the effects of his self-isolation and toxicity on not just on himself but everyone around him that we're able to move forward. I think a huge part of what made this season hard for people to watch is because it stews in the discomfort relentlessly, not allowing you as an audience member to see beyond the narrow well of loneliness and suffering and pain that the characters are trapped in. A lot of the episodes felt oppressively quiet or uncomfotably explosive because it feels like we're experiencing everything too closely from Carmy's eyes. To me, it's a beautiful work in point of view. But watching things from the POV of someone who is self-destructive, self-isolating, volatile, and just a STUCK human is hardly pleasant. Like you, I wouldn't put this above season one or two, but I believe that this season will be remembered fondly through whatever comes in season 4. (Also, yes please no more John Cena and a little less Faks in general. Thank you!)
I liked more this season that last one, this is beautiful and give more of an instrospective view of the people working at the restaurant, and this season made me love more the dinamic they all had on season one.
I absolutely loved this season even after a rewatch recently. I just love these characters so much I don’t care if we are just hanging out. Now if I wasn’t able to binge this season, I’m not sure it would work out since some episodes are pretty slow. My only complaint is the haunting stuff that kept getting brought up. It just wasn’t that funny to me and got tiring. I still love the Facks and really hope we get to meet the sister sugar hates lol
My reading is the show knows what it's doing and this season felt off and somehow disjointed from the first two because carmy is off. It's a fourth wall metaphor for how the bear (the show and the restaurant) has a shiny sleek exterior now but underneath it's all falling apart. The show is "worse now" because Carmy is worse now. Carmy is in more debt that ever, he's headed for a literal mental breakdown, restaurants all over the city are failing but they're just steaming bull-headedly ahead. I don't think this has a happy ending, or at least not in the way we expected. Maybe carmy will realise that his friends, family and community that loved them as the beef are more important than chasing lofty but ultimately hollow and meaningless accolades? Maybe carmy is doomed to follow in mikey's footsteps? I think the tonal shift from season two to three is intentional
from someone that’s been in the restaurant game and culinary no longer in that industry i see the value in season 3. it may not hit others unless you’ve been in that industry and that’s perhaps why people don’t get it. it’s just one of those things you won’t get unless you’ve been thru it. Much like with depression or self deletion thoughts people can’t get certain moments unless you’ve been in that position.
Ya no I thought the celebrity cameos This season were so odd, season two kinda perfects what you want from a celebrity showing up and I thought the josh harnet one was solid and I do want to see more of this frank character, but John cena felt like a producer forcing him into the show, episode 5 is easily the weakest of the series because half of the episode is really great and the other half is just the faks trying to hard to be funny, and I like the faks, but it didn’t gel, besides that 10/10 season, loved it not as consistent but easily the most introspective show I’ve seen in awhile
I think this is a perfect review, except I would also add that one area I found ironically lacking in the most this season was the FOOD! I remember with seasons 1-2 I would scold myself if I forgot to prepare a meal before putting on an episode because I would instantly be hungry and craving absolutely everything on the screen. Perhaps it's a metaphor for Carmy's emotional state this season, but when I looked at the plates rather than being appetizing I found the overwhelming sensation of restriction, complacency, and shades of "greige"- in what should be visually stunning cuisine! We should be envying these plates served up at high-end establishments and yet each dish this season gave the sensation of wearing a corset, or being on a painstakingly strict diet when all you really want is a juicy cheeseburger. It definitely took a lot of the pizzazz out of the show for me, and especially reminded me a lot of when The Walking Dead first started to drag with hyperfixating on in-group politics over actual zombie action and survival.
I just don't understand why Richie went from understanding, and even saying "you're all I got" to Carmy to hating his guts because of an argument with things that not only Syd also said (and he doesn't hate her gut anymore and respects her) but he also started the beef by calling Carmy "Donna" which considering his whole backstory with his mom and the fact he literally just found out Claire listened to him saying horrible stuff obviously he would spin out of control. Richie even left by saying "I love you" because he knew that argument was so stupid, and yet even after he said sorry Richie just hates him now and acts fully immature I just don't get it
Yes, there were some episodes where it's hard to say what's going on, but i can say when i saw first three episodes, I thought that if season 3 continues at the same speed, it will take the bar above season 2. Yes, i think the last episode of S3 is weaker that S1 and offcource S2, but there were also some amazing episodes, offcource the ones you've mentioned. It's still a series about real human problems. Without an idiotic agenda.
There was a time when I mostly watched foreign TV shows and films (including the UK) because they were always character based. Not one gun fight or car chase in sight. Italy had a couple of incredibly funny "bumbling idiot" cop shows that were hysterical. I miss them....
I totally agree. This was my favorite season. It’s refreshingly slow in today’s 1/2 second scroll obsessed attention span. I appreciate the way they spent time to show entire conversations and didn’t immediately get to the point - felt like real world relationships do. The cinematography is phenomenal with the tight shots and story enhancing cuts. One of my favorite openings is episode 2, the montage of real life restaurants and chefs around the city intermixed with people leading life - the rowers, the guy changing out the sign. I love how that part really captured middle America, working for the dream and focused on how we are all more alike than different at the end of the day. The emotion, the storytelling, the music, the beauty of the themes…I loved it all.
I’m sorry, but for all the cinematography and tone setting this show does, it just sucks. There are plot holes that make everything trivial, like “why do they have so many people on staff if they’re constantly battling budget?” And too convenient blessings like the “money in the banana stand” moment with the tomato sauce. I know a lot of people just want to be in their emotions watching this stuff and think “out of the blue” moments like finding a bunch of money is nice, but it’s incredibly lazy and cliche to the point that the rest of the show can’t be taken seriously
The tomato sauce "blessing" has been foreshadowed since the beginning of season one, with them talking about how they have so much tomato sauce if no one uses it, so i think it's pretty organic. And the budgetting thing also kind of makes sense because it is very apparent that Carmy is shit at handling his finances and regularily spends a lot more money than they have e.g. with the 12.000 dollar butter
Why is everyone so ignorant about season 3? It sucked, and it bore the hell out of me to be honest. I'm a fan of both S1&S2 but there was maybe only 2-3 ep. That were ok
In season 3. When they waste episodes to give fans a more emotional feel for the characters, it really bums me out. Specially those 2 hospital episodes. smh 🤦🤷

I wear suits now.

Am I the only one that didn't like Season 2? I"m going to have to watch it again, I guess. It better be better...

Bro I waited MONTHS to watch this season bc everyone saying it was mid, but other than the episode with Sugar giving birth, I loved every episode.
Violet is a top 5 episode of the show, and I'll die saying that!

Fantastic analysis. Big fan of your channel! Keep up the great work :)
I wasn’t really feeling this season other than a few episodes that really stood out

I'm haunted. 😎

If you thought this season was slow mark my words it’s going to pay off later on down the line!

Season 3 wasnt ADHD friendly for sure.
I honestly think this was the best season of the show. People just want fucking plot nowadays

Completely disagree on the John Cena point. He works perfectly as the (im assuming) oldest Fak
I though S1 and S2 were perfect. S3 was less than perfect.

this show sucks and is overdramatic as shit!!!
