- A new dining facility at Fort Lee is setting the standards for future facilities of this type. Built as part of the BRAC 05 process, the facility utilizes start-of-the-art technologies and green building materials to feed Soldiers in an environmentally friendly and energy efficient facility. Patrick Bloodgood has the story.

I had my share as I'm retired but i really love the mess hall in every base that i was stationed at , It was always delicious food , thanks for all those cooks that dont have a life because they are always working to serve their fellow soldiers.
While I was ETS’ing I went to every dining facility I ate at while at Ft. Campbell and thanked every cook and food service personnel for all what they did for us. You all deserved our thanks.
this sounds very wholesome and very autistic for some reason. It sounds like the military equivilant of that school kid that would thank all the cops and volunteer parents working as crossing guard, go around and thank all the councilors before graduating
Splendid. Company Mess Halls and in the field always was something to look forward to.
I was a food service specialist in the Marines and we served good food and our Marines where well fed most of all we took pride in our jobs and I personally loved being able to start a persons day off right.
God bless

Jeffery Needham Respect to you, Jeff
Jeffery Needham I ate some of those delicious meals. Thank you and semper Fi
@@mr.nobody68 I always admired the food service specialist in the Army for the excellent meals they provided. I was shocked when I had my my first military breakfast and they asked me how did I want my eggs cooked.
what was your favorite recipe?
When I was at NATTC Memphis in the mid 60s, I was berthed in a WWII Navy barracks between three identical Marine barracks. The Navy galley was a quarter mile away with the advanced electronics sailors. in their fancy barracks with rooms and real beds. The little Marine galley was just across the street in the first floor of a remodeled barracks - they had the same daily menu as the Navy (which - in fairness - served about 10,000 every morning vs maybe a thousand by the Marines....) but the Marine chow was memorably so much better - The Marine cooks made omelets to order - want one with six eggs? Just ask... The Navy mess cooks served up a scoop of powered scrambles - take em or leave em, but you better eat every bit of what you took - like it or not. Marine SOS was way better than the Navy's, and the grunts had a pot of sweet brown beans with caramelized onions, a tray of thick sliced brown bread and a pot of salty melted butter with a paintbrush that was one of my favorites. A Gunny cook told me that it was a nod to the breakfast served at the Tun Tavern.
As an Air Force personal, I was sent to Ft. Lee for the quartermaster course in 1961. The thing I remember most was the eggs we would drink for breakfast. I have eaten in mess halls in the Air Force ,Army and the Navy. Navy chow is by far the best. Eat a lot of C and K rations while in the field in Texas. Ft. Lee, Alaska, North Carolina, and Florida and some places I cannot mention. Loved that canned spam.
I was just one year's of age when you were in the Air Force, 1961. I went to Fort Lee Virginia in January of 1980 for AIT Petroleum Supply Course. I was there for two months. K rations no longer existed. C rations replaced K's. Then in the mid and late 80's MRE's replaced C Rations. But the Chow at Fort Lee Virginia was very good when I was there in 1980. But through out my Army Career, I have eaten at Air Force, and Navy Chow Halls, and actually, Air Force and Navy Chow was actually better. But ate good at Army Chow Halls as well.
@@jamesb.9472 Area 51.
youre the second commenter mentioning this specific chow hall has alarmingly undercooked food.
I miss my medium rare chicken.
I miss my cheese and ham omelet for breakfast.
Ikr? Got sick from that shit
Holy shit that sounds nasty
texas pete and a prayer
I miss America.
Seeing the sunset from the second floor while you are letting the troops eat before you. Is a gift
When I was assigned to Fort Lee back in 1966, we got great meals, well planned and well prepared. It's nice to see things have gotten even better since.
Thanks for your likes and support ❣️

That's my Hangouts email you can add me up for more information thanks so much
I'm an old 80s soldier, and our food was fantastic! we always ate good, had plenty, and it was a great tasting menu.
I miss the cream chipped beef on toast. Air Force 1985-91
You never go hungry in the Army! They had the BEST breakfast ever...
when I got on active duty and found out they had eggs to order every morning it blew my mind...…...1983 to 1985...….
@Big Bill O'Reilly No ....and they don't take Smart asses either, so I guess that knocks you out.....
@@ericzerkle5214 You know what, I got fed, watered, clothed, paid & always somewhere to sleep.
I joined the Marines as a 17 year old back in 1981. One of the best decisions I ever made. The 3 warm meals a day were the first in my young life. 40 years later I can still tell you what my first meal was. It was spaghetti and garlic toast. I needed that kind of daily support in those days.
My favorite meal in those days. Was a unhealthy but yummy breakfast. 2 patties of hash browns, 3 over easy eggs laid on top, then sausage gravy over that. 4 pieces of toast, a couple of glasses of orange juice. And yet I weighed only 160 pounds the majority of my Marine Corps Career.
By the way if we were on ship and heading into an operation. We almost always got surf and turf.
Also mid rats were awesome. No need to head to fast food.
Nothing is too good for those that serve. Thank you!!!
Wow. When i was in highschool i was told that all soldiers had just a 10mins for all his lunch and then he had to run out. we are happy hear the better and well provisioned catering facility in each decade.
Fort Dix 1971. The induction center mess hall was Hugh. Looked like an aircraft hangar. I pulled KP there on thanksgiving day. We served 4000 turkey diners. The organization the mess Sargent and cooks had to get the job done was beyond impressive.
I'm so happy for this generations Army troops. I was stationed at Ft. Lee but it was a long time ago that I don't remember what the mess looked liked. I would guess that it was quite old. This new one sure looks fantastic! These soldiers work hard & deserve a top notch mess hall!
as someone whos currently at fort lee, it is not top notch. lately its been under construction for whatever reason. and often hardly has enough food to feed anyone. eating at home for hbl just makes me feel like ive been starved there
I trained as a 94b cook at ft lee in 81. learned a lot there and one thing I want to say we fed the troops the best we could with what we had!!! and cleanliness was a virtue!!! "allons"
Lots of respect for the cooks...…...they worked their asses of in the field with the field kitchens......had to work weekends and holidays too...….I should know I had to do KP in the field a lot due to pissing off my platoon sergeant all the time.....
10/10 would eat here again. I went to ordinance school here, the chow hall has a ridiculous amount of choices.
0:42 I went to Fort Lee in 2010 as a 91D Charlie Company, Class 38D, and I remember SSG Aceves in my company. It's been so long. I miss the good old days.
My son-in-law served in Ft. Lee, during the Iraq War, at the same time, our son served at Camp Lejeune. It was a very stressful time for our family. God Bless our troops.
I'm here at Fort Lee right now for Air Force Military Tech school i love it here!
I was there in 2012 when it was pretty much brand new and it was always awesome
Ft Lee is also home to the Army Quartermaster Corps. to the marines on here griping, you might find it interesting to know that a good number of your quartermaster jobs train here as well. and the marine flag football teams regularly get their heads handed to them every year.
Ha! Ha! True. Went in back in '99 as a 92G, and yes the jarhead cooks train there as well, but it's all 100% ARMY. HOOAH!
Don't forget about Fort Gordon is the home of the Signal Corps. When I went to my AIT back in 2003 there, we had Air Force and Marines on our post. So not only it was the Army's main station for Signal but for all the other branches as well.
Yes. I was a 92G back in 2003 and one of my instructors was a marine and a few students in my class. The Army told us to call him Gunny or Gunnery Sgt because Marines take their rank seriously.
How can you get your head handed to you in a flag football game?
I was pretty much a fan of Army chow my whole career. Good chow will always be one of the great motivators when it comes to positively affecting the troop's morale.
Tf u mean we waited hours for Chow everyday
@@1millionsubs300 Sounds like ya’ll were hungry.
@@0sumgamezzz435 ain't got nothing to do with hunger ma boi we just wait a super long time
Well, then if you guys weren’t hungry, there should have been no problem. I have no problem waiting on food if I’m not hungry and it’s free.
@@0sumgamezzz435 shii i do tf
When I was at Ft Lee for training in 1970 - we ate in a company size mess hall. We would line up for chow - there was only room for about 5 people to sign in for chow - the rest would be standing outside - yep - even if it was raining! ....
I went to Fort Lee, VA for my AIT training in April of 2011 and the DFAC was amazing and very nice and I loved Fort Lee!!
HAHAHAHAHA “ 3600 in 90 minutes” I used that chow hall for 6 months and we were lucky to get a tenth of that through those lines
She was probably talking about non student personnel.😉
I didn't realize that this facility was this young. I just graduated from the Ordnance school back in January
Cool. My son graduated in June from fort Lee he is in Japan now.
I can attest to that. The Samuel Sharpe Dining Facility was huge. The entire time I was stationed at Fort Lee for my AIT, I was still impressed by the size of it.
I ate at that DFAC for about 8-10 weeks, food was good. Obviously DFACs are not 5 star restaurants, but to everyone complaining about this DFAC the food was indeed good. They also have a deli line where you can get subs.
this is where i will be doing my ait, and i am stoked!
Ha Ha 1:02 that couple was like WTF did we just walk into?
When I was stationed at Ft. Lee, ours was just a regular mess hall but the cooks trained there and the food was incredible, plus you could go back for seconds.
I did my AIT at Ft Lee in 1983. We had a company mess hall, civilian cooks, best food throughout my service.
Fort Lee was and seems to be a very nice place to do duty. I was there in 72...I think I remember that painting of the Sunset in the older dining facility.
They certainly deserve the best, that's what i got everywhere i was sent when i was in the Army back in the 80's and 90's.
The two best days of my Basic training were the days I was assigned to KP. The first time we were chosen, and five of us had the best day, washing dishes, eating and taking smoke breaks whenever we wanted (between mealtimes, anyway). The second time they came looking for volunteers, and 5 hands shot up immediately, before anyone else realized “hey, these guys have already done it, and are volunteering again! There must be something to this!”😂
I remember when I was in the ARMY, stationed in Fort Gordon, and we as a unit had to deploy to Fort Drum, upstate New York State, we stopped off at FORT Lee, in Virginia, I found out that Fort Lee is quartermaster school and for cooks, and it's a big Fort, but it was really nice to see, since I didn't know the south but it's really big, like Fort Gordon, but we didn't go to Fort Bragg, but this brings back memories and that was in 1976,long time ago but I have been out for over 35 years ago and I never forgot anything
The Army has food that looks that good..wow i really cant wait till I graduate!!!
I was stationed here and the food was the awesome every day!!!!!! Loved Fort Lee!!!!
“The awesome “ u sound like star fire
the trays are new everytime? or re-used
In 1967 ft.Benning the chow hall were small a frame wood buildings. The food was good.
I remember. Harmony Church three tours. One with that Infantry Training Brigade and the others with Delta 197th Support Bn.
The best military meal I ever ate was in the field at Little Creek, Va. in 1973, as we did an introduction to amphibious warfare. We went out for a day of patrolling and small unit tactics and they brought supper out to us in vacuum cans. I suppose it was just a normal field mess, but it was the best tasting food I had ever eaten.
I was in the 16th Ord Battalion before they moved to Fort Lee, we had 2 small dfacs! This looks nice
May-Aug 09 APG
until the tray return gets backed up as hell. Go Ordnance.
Lmao XD this guy gets it
Lol never gets old
Was in Fort Lee in 04-05 for MOS school at the Marine Detachment. Good food on that base.
Nice place. I did a tour of West Point a few years ago. They serve 4000 cadets at one sitting at the same time. Hard to imagine.
My nephew is a Culinary Specialist in the Navy, he took cooking school here
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE 🙏❤️
It's a MESS HALL, dammit! It's a MESS HALL!
Defac
I agree mess hall is what it was called when I was stationed at Fort Lee Back in 94
All I can say is " Ray's Diner " was the absolute BEST! 2/2 CAV Bamberg, Germany had the best food I've had in the Army hands down! Msgt. Ray was a great man whol looked after his troops. Toujour Pret
And I thought the one we had there in the mid 1970's was nice. DAMN! Got my MOS by OJT and went to an advance Unit Supply class there in 1978. You cry we supply.
I was stationed at Schofield In Hawaii in early 90’s and the food was great!!!
eggs to order baby...…………..I was there in mid 80 s...……...if u have not been back 75% of the old base has been torn down.....even the quads that they kept have been redone...………...
I was there in C quad 83-86. I had no complaint's about the chow and they were all Army cooks, the hot rat's that went to the field could be lacking sometimes.
I remeber stationed in SEOUL KOREA. YOUNG SAN ARMY. BASE. IN 1970. WE HAD THE BEST. MESS. HALL THE. CHOW. WAS EXCELLENT ESPECIALLY. BREAKFAST. AND. DINNER. ALL YOU COULD. EAT. AND. FOR. LATINOS IN THE ARMY THEY FLEW IN SOME MEXICAN. COOKS FRON L.A. ON SPETEMBER 15 MEXICAN. BUFFET. THEY HAD TAMALES, TACOS. ENCHILADAS
Fort Lee was where I received My MOS ,as then 94B, now- 92G, Food Services Specialist. The 75th Ranger Regiment gave Me the Cool Guy Schools ( Jump, Air Assault, and Ranger Training)!!
People made fun of army food but I can tell you it was really good and always appreciated the cooks in the back. It’s a lot of work.
Took my 94B training there in 1981,great memories.
I was there in 1981, 76y.
Nothing beats the Block House in Fort Sill, OK 💪🏿💪🏿

I was in the Army from 2001-2015 and I remember the food being decent. But early on there were some DEFACs where you still had to pull KP. I did in AIT as well. Now its all contractors.
I was an Army cook in the early 60's and we had the best food for the troops.
Company B, 538th Engineer Battalion, Fort Knox, KY........
Came to Fort Lee 4 weeks ago, I can confirm the food is still top notch
This looks very modern and pleasing to the eye. Why, I'd even pay $6 to eat lunch there. Great job, guys. I'd even go as far as to say - looks good, tastes good.
I think I even saw the chicken jump off the table.
Hahahahaha!!! I see what you did there, Ted!! LMAO!!
Army food was great back in 1965 and the Army is Always Great. Great Leaders and have great memories of all my brothers. Go Army.
I remember eating at the 2nd Armor Division’s chow hall while I was stationed at Ft Hood during the 70’s, and there chow was bomb!!! My unit HHC 1/67th mess hall’s food was good also.
Holy Hell, WTF is this? When I was in Boot Camp I had a Drill Instructor cussing me out while I was inhaling my food in 2 minutes and here we are today. Relaxing, chillin, enjoying.....
Thomas, this isn't boot camp. It is located at Advanced Individual Training Fort Lee.
The most highly organized military organization on the planet from top to bottom.Respect USA
Was there for training in 2000. I would like to see the base now.
Today's dining facilities are great!
Was stationed there from 12/67 to 3/68. Even then I was surprised how good the food was coming from Basic Training. Of course it was nothing like today’s.
This is much more relaxed then a video i saw about Marine OCS candidates, with some weird procedures for eating, i've never seen anything like it, and had to ask what was the point of it..do they do that in the army as well? if your not sure of what im talking about, i can refer you to the link
What a difference from now to 1960s!
Everything has changed since the 60s guy
It sure was different in 1965 when I was in the Army. At both Fort Jackson (SC) and at Fort Gordon (GA) we lived in WW-II era barracks and ate in WW-II era mess halls. The food was okay and certainly nourishing, but very few, if any, wanted seconds of it. I'll never forget the SOS nearly every day at breakfast that looked, and sometimes tasted, as if it had been made with LaPage paste.
you also received cash on payday, I also remember those wooden green barracks
Great looking place how about the barracks now?
I was at Fort Lee in 1987.
went to ft. lee cook school early 80's good school. it was not a golden corral but it was good training for my 2 yrs in alaska!!!!
Lots of respect for the cooks...…...they worked their asses of in the field with the field kitchens......had to work weekends and holidays too...….I should know I had to do KP in the field a lot due to pissing off my platoon sergeant all the time....
Go about 10 days on C-Rations and they bring out hot chow you think SOS is a gourmet delicacy. These cooks have a very tough thankless job. Thanks for the chow!
I was at Ft. Lee from May to July 1991, 94B, the food was good
It would have been worth the time to make the DFAC more historically-centric to help build a working knowledge of the OD branch for new soldiers. Check out the Fort Eustis DFAC where its like eating in a modern museum.
As a cook I was, the foods they serve in military looking very good... 👍👍👏👏❤❤😲😲😎😎😍😍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Where did those chairs go??
I appreciate all of united state army..❤.
I proud of them ..
I wanna to join the united state army.
That's my biggest dream
this is just like going to golden corral its a express buffet. good food yum yum
military food has always been good
Nice 👍
2021 (the defac looks exactly the same in in fort lee rn)
do they still call them Consolidated Messes? US Army 1961-1968 and it was the best years of my life.
Gonna be in fort lee for my ait training
this is great
That looks like a really nice facility, and the Army may be trying to catch up to the Air Force on the quality of the food they serve.
Sidney Mathious went there as af tech trainee. It’s nowhere near the af standard lol!
Take all you want, but eat all you take!
Army food was good & plentiful in the 1980s, and Army cheffs were special. No special touch in the meals were ever missed, during my watch.
Since then standards in all Armed Services have fallen. This video is a good sign, though a handsome new building is nowhere near as important as the quality of the food ingredients and the mastery of the cheffs involved.
I can wait awhle extra for perfect bread porkchops, mashers with tons of thick gravy!
Where the Hell were you eating? A good meal in the mess hall in the 80's was SOS and in the field a tuna MRE.
Delicious food is so important for the busy Soldiers
That could be a great restaurant.
That restroom was the vape spot before class 😂
You know what I remember about fort lee?? The best damn bar ever. The hideaway with rock'n Rob! $5 dollar all you can drink pitchers. So many good drunken nights at the Lee with random officer's giving this SPC a ride back to the barracks.
I was stationed at Ft. Lee & this is one nice mess hall. I won't say what year I was there but the one I remember was a dilapidated older bldg but I was too young to realize it. Also it is so wonderful to see the diversity especially the one young staff sergeant lady. Most of the ones I served under were White , bigoted, and real abusive out at Ft . Lee. Makes me wished I were still serving today.
@jhonnycashowns I'd like to see the stats that back up that claim. Thanks.
The troops desserve the best
GOD BLESS AMERICA...GO ARMY...GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS!
I've been to Fort Lee, well I go there every week cause I live 30 minutes way from there.
Yer making me hungry,23 yrs and never had a problem w the hot chow. Ate it 73'-76' and 91'-08' which was even yummier🇺🇸❤
Im a Marine here at Fort Lee for Arms school and the cafeteria is alright, 11 years ago makes a big difference I guess
I have been there as well.
Way...way better than when I was in .. traded up.
I was stationed at camp Hanson on Okinawa for a few months while waiting to get to Vietnam(1970) was assigned to H&S company. w were called down to KADENA air base to put down some riots caused by "visiting" Japanese "red army " radicals who were protesting nerve gas being stored on the island..after we had completed our mission , we ate at the enlisted mens mess hall. I'm not complaining about marine corps chow....BUT the Air Force food was out standing. they had REAL SILVERWARE,SALT SHAKERS,TABLE CLOTHS, REAL COFFEE MUGS, CLOTH NAPKINS. I HAVE ALSO EATEN NAVY FOOD( the navy ....as we all know, is a BRANCH of the MARINE CORPS) while aboard the aircraft carrier INTREPID while in dry dock at Boston Navy Shipyard. the food was pretty good too.BUT I would still rate the Air Force just a little better!
