  • The LGR Woodgrain 486 has gotten a little rough in recent years, with the wood-pattern vinyl getting all scraped and torn up while being moved around all over the place. So it's time to apply some fresh woodgrain!

I feel like the old version looked more like how you would expect woodgrain to look around this computer's era. Everything in the 90s had that kind of heavy grain and medium brown hue (though often more golden brown than the old wrap was). This is an odd case where, while I prefer the new wrap aesthetically (both the grain and color, IMO, are nicer and I think more timeless), for this application I preferred the old wrap, simply because it nailed that 90s fake wood furniture look. The new wrap is nonetheless quite lovely, and in particular I think it goes a bit better with the beige face plate than the old wrap, which was a bit grayish and muted in comparison.

Perhaps if you want something more permanent in the future, you could get a custom woodgrain hydrographically printed onto the case? You cold even do the front panels of all the drives together so they've got a consistent woodgrain over all of them, although I'd probably swap the Nakamichi disc changer for a standard drive. Technically there's nothing stopping you from doing whole front panel that way, but I think it's better having the bay covers and/or drives printed, and leaving the rest of the front panel beige.
Anyway, this new woodgrain looks pretty great to me. Hopefully it serves you well for at least a few years.

Woodgrain is cool. It's odd to think that at some point pretty much everything in homes would have been wood, metal or wool/leather based. Maybe the reason for woodgrain is a cost effective way to appeal to those that want "newer" things but want them to match all the stuff already in their homes circa 1930-1960 and made of wood and metal etc? Wooden end cheek for a Behringer RD6 anyone?

While I like the color & look of the new wrap I do not think it fits with the era that you went with for this PC build. To me the new look is "too modern" (but also too old, as in like 1700s/1800s old) whereas what you had before fit perfectly with the woodgrain you would see in other appliances & homegoods from the 1970s through mid 1990s.

If I were you, I would have actioned that floppy cap with the original woodgrain on it and with a signature on the back :-) Or a giveaway on some contest. Not necessarily for the monetary value if you know what I mean, but for the fans ... There's millions of us I tell you ! Millions :-)

I think the coarse, oakish grain of the old one looked good. I kinda seemed durable & rugged, even though it was just vinyl. I was initially apprehensive about the new look. It was finer, like walnut or cherry, and I wasn't sure if the grain would be distinctive enough. That said, I think the new looks good, to. It looks more decorative & fancy, like a nightstand - instead of just durable & functional. For the longest time, I thought it would be cool to put woodgrain on my Everex Megacube. I would then use it for a lamp table. However, I could never decide what I wanted to do with the front panel. I kept putting things off. I may do something eventually.

I think you should woodgrain the compact flash bay as well, maybe in two pieces (one for the outside, one for the area around the slot). And here's a crazy idea, build a plinth/base for it our of woodgrain-coated MDF or chipboard. That way it'll look more like the PC is in a wooden enclosure.

Hi Clint, would you consider doing a video on null-modem mutiplayer gaming featuring the 486? I guess it is how many of us got introduced to multi machine multiplayer! Remember having a home brewed parallel null modem cable from my uncle ☺️

Yea, I agree with how you feel about it. It's not bad but woodgrain gives a different vibe. This feels more like just a board of well cleaned/painted wood but not woodgrain. I now miss my 90s Lexus that came with wood grain in it.

Looks great Clint! I was sad to see the old woodgrain go, but the new woodgrain 😍

I'm gonna miss the Radioshack "We got a really good deal buying this woodgrain wrap in bulk" look of the older stuff, but it's nice to see PCs get taken care of after all their years of service

Looks fantastic. Next time, or on another project, you might want to consider vinyl flooring. It's textured, tough, and comes in many different patterns and shades.

Looks good man, at first i thought no its the wrong asthetic, but it turned out well 👌 makes me want to build a 1999-2002 era case with a silver front with blue leds and that new type of woodgrain on the case cover and wrap the drive bay facias with it also... Be like having a stereo of the era right before they transitioned to silver whole cases

I had my 486 covered in vinyl back in 2004 (when it wasn't mainstream haha). But it was a fancy metalic green for the cover and silver for the front. I had no other computer and wanted to make mine look modern. Last year I restored its original look :)

now you need to build an early 2000's computer from when computers changed from being beige to black using the ugly imitation green/black marble vinyl.
