Neal; Barbarino's voice with Epstein's hair. lol. He was adorable back then...and could rock out like no one else! Stevie, as always, the incomparable Mr. Soul Man. It's like Tina Turner and Sam Cooke got trapped together inside a beautiful, long-haired Portuguese babe-magnet. This clip is CLASSIC. Thanks for sharing, mariet2.
WTF? Never head them do this tune and I'm incredibly freaked, in a good way, by this funked-up version of the band. Wow!!! Herbie Hancock jamming with Journey and pairing up in an intense, fun-filled exchange with Schon?!? Hallelujah!!!
Don't know if you're still out there, Frank - but I'm with you! In fact, I love this so much I wish they would have done an entire album like this! This is really some great stuff!
Stunning! I'm referring to Steve, of course! I loved that shirt he wore! He absolutely tears this song! AMAZING! Neal's guitar playing was flawless...back then.
Imagine what he could do now with a mitch more mature voice..... a little raspier and and little more soul, I love his matured voice it is totally awesome.
I wish the powers that be do some visual and audio tweaking to the entire performance and put it on DVD along any other televised performances. I'd certainly buy one!!
Saweeeeeeettttt!!! Man i do ❤️me some cowbells 🤣!!! This groove is so funky fresh, I definitely can hear Stevie putting something like this on his upcoming album!!!🤗🤙🏽
Holy fuck-a-roni! I NEVER saw this video before! I loved Journey growing up, and this video of then doing this is like from another world! That jam that Herbie and Neal do is just awesome!!! Man, REAL music and REAL musicians is just pure awesomeness! :)
Ha read in the info that the tags are "pop rock blues"sure but with a nice big fat Funky gravy poured all over it.oh and makes me think about a "critic"like Dave Marsh who gave all Jrny albums one star...when a genius like Herbie Hancock wants to jam with you, means a hell of a lot more.
Steve really did! The man is " The Voice"! He can jam with anybody, anyplace, anytime! He had it going on then and he still got it going on now. That's why he's THE G.O.A.T. entertainer!💕💕💕💕💕💕
@@davidawilliams252 I smile every time I see the background singers because they are smiling at all that Steve is doing. It almost seems like they are the only ones on the stage that fully hear what Steve is pulling off here. I hear this and wish Steve had done much more of this sort of thing. He was a soul singer at heart and really should have been in a soul band of some sort, I think. At least as a side gig sort of thing, it would have been amazing!
I saw them do this song on, "Soundstage", on PBS, years ago! My mouth dropped to the floor! I think they did the song on, "The Midnight Special" back then, as well. I have to go back and look at my video of them on there! I do know they did on "Soundstage", though!
Cool, groovin' version. Journey did a version the year before in October '78 during their King Biscuit Superjam sessions (inc. Tower of Power Horns), which was never broadcast or officially released, although the audio is out there (and Roadrunner from '78 is here on youtube)
The note that Perry hits at 4:49 is insane. And it's live. Interesting that in the songs Journey performed earlier on this Midnight Special episode, he was lip singing to his studio work. This song shows that guitarist Neal Schon and especially drummer Steve Smith (as well as Perry) were truly some of the best musicians in the world. Still are actually.
Agreed with one of the posts, this is a hidden gem on RUclips. All I can say is, the two lady back up singers were probably thinking "damn that white boy can sing his ass off"! LOL!
Ahhhhhhh nothing to compare to the VOICE for any of who haven't heard Steve announced on Morning Joe ???? that he is releasing a new album omg I wonder if he will promote it by going on late night Fallon Kimmel Colbert sooooo excited
Agree, but the second they allowed (c)rap, especially BEFORE ELO and Journey (same year, I think), was when I decided I DGAF about their opinion. Can't stand rap. I like songs where people play real instruments and actually sing.
Not prepared to argue Herbie w you as I didnt start digging him til 72 when I got turned ESP (the '65 Miles disc w Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams)--the one w Miles & wife on the cover (the one he made give up dancing on Bway). Theres nothing I can tell a Wikipedia-reader about jazz--you being an expert & me just a guy preferring the hard bop of the Miles quintets w Coltrane 2 this the last pre-fusion Miles (when Herbie was replaced by Corea & Jarrett). Thx 4 explaining jazz 2 me.
The hand jive stuff didn't bother me at all - a bunch of people having a lot of fun and getting into the music. The way the mic was placed didn't give SP much use of the front part of the stage runway anyway. The people furthest from the stage showing off for the cameras however...
Uhhh, Herbie's getting not only getting paid here, but getting TV exposure, which Jazz guys get about as often as do lepers and Martians. He'd probably play have played with ABBA or Alvin and the Chipmunks under similar conditions.
The complete lineup of Journey isn't involved with this, I'm pretty sure this is Herbie Hancock's Headhunters with Steve & Neal added - don't think Journey could be this funky!
are you kidding me?!? You didn't know that?!? what you living under a rock. Journey can get down! in fact, an unknown part of Steve's music history was that he auditioned for TOWER OF POWER! they said to herbie over the phone: "the man can sing! but he's white and we're looking for someone black." and that's when herbie looked at John villanueva and said: "Steve Perry!" And that's when they made that move.
mrJimCharles Drummer Steve Smith is there too. Camera angles make it hard to confirm if Valory and Rolie are there too but Perry said in interview that "Journey" was there but I don't see them. Makes most sense for Smith to be playing because he was the most technically proficient player in Journey.
Sorry, Moe--I have as much faith as anyone in Herbie's integrity but there's no chance on God's green earth that by the late 70's there's ANY jazz guys passing up national exposure with a band then getting monster-popular (guaranteeing large TV viewership) just b/c his integrity wouldn't permit. Hey, I love (and saw) the pre-Steve Perry Journey and have great respect for Neil, Gregg and Aynsley Dunbar (especially), but--like everybody else--Herbie's had mouths to feed. (Ya' can't eat integrity.)
ah Dan, how do you know that Herbie Hancock hasn't got musical integrity? you don't know shit dude. Jazz musicians play Jazz festivals, and they get more then most rock bands.Besides Jazz cats are into it out of love for the music never for the money.
Am I the only one that did not appreciate the people doing their annoying and distracting little hand dance on the stage where Steve wasn't able to have full use of the stage? Steve was great anyway! I guess those were dancers that were frustrated they couldn't be on stage. It was ok to dance all around the stage but not on the stage imho.
Steve at his best singing R&B with Herbie Hancock just the perfect fit for 1979. Steve loves his R&B songs I hope he never gives it up.
Neal; Barbarino's voice with Epstein's hair. lol. He was adorable back then...and could rock out like no one else! Stevie, as always, the incomparable Mr. Soul Man. I THINK its on THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL
One of my favorite jams of all time, rock on rhythm and blues

digging this song but wish they would remaster the video!
I remember that shirt!! Haha! Stevie is jammin hard! You go baby!!!! And what a tight backside you got! Phew!!!
