Can’t believe there was no love for “If you want blood” by AC/DC
A lot of great albums in 1978. Some of my favorites:
Toto - debut
Billy Joel - 52nd Street
Journey - Infinity
Foreigner - Double Vision
The Cars - debut
Van Halen - debut
Boston - Don't Look Back
Oh yeah baby!
There were so many good live albums, everyone forgot AC/DC's If You Want Blood, You've Got It! That one ruled.
Top 10:
#1 - Judas Priest - "Stained Class"
#2 - Judas Priest - "Killing Machine"
#3 - Rainbow - "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll"
#4 - Van Halen - "Van Halen"
#5 - Rush - "Hemispheres"
#6 - UFO - "Obsession"
#7 - Scorpions - "Tokyo Tapes"
#8 - Thin Lizzy - "Live and Dangerous"
#9 - Styx - "Pieces of Eight"
#10 - Jethro Tull - "Heavy Horses"
That's actually a perfect list! I would also have added Toto's debut album and The Who-Who Are You.
Xlnt list, yet I would add -
Rolling Stones - Some Girls
Journey - Infinity
AC/DC - Pwerage
Oh Shit! What a great year.
Serious shiznitz on your part.
Here's some new material for SoT T-shirts, all quotes by Chris Alo:
"And then there's always another show"
"I've only bought it twice, but I would love to buy it a lot more"
"That album's horrible, just ask the guys in the band"
"I blame it on pasta"
"I think I'm technically sleeping right now"
Great show guys.

Another excellent episode of SOT
Ace Frehley's '78 solo album.
Welcome back, Lynne! I had no idea that you were a Ramones fan! I've loved them since I was twelve years old (in '85), when I saw "Rock and Roll High School" with a friend. We were instant Ramones converts! Good times! :-) 1978 is a special year for me, as it was the year that, at the tender age of five, I first started getting into rock and roll. My first album was Paul Stanley's '78 solo album. I got it that year and was *obsessed* with it at five years old! To this day, I love it as much as any KISS album, and I'm a serious KISS fan! My top ten '78 favorites are:
1. Van Halen: self-titled (No explanation needed.)
2. The Rolling Stones: Some Girls (One of the best comeback albums, period.)
3. Cheap Trick: Heaven Tonight (Such a classic! Only their '77 debut beats it for me.)
4. Jethro Tull: Bursting Out (A seriously under-rated double live album by one of my favorite bands.)
5. Boston: Don't Look Back (I've always loved this one just as much as the debut!)
6. Son Seals: Live and Burning ( *Fiercely* rocking live set from one of the greatest blues guitarists!)
7. Judas Priest: Stained Class (Possibly my favorite Priest album, or at least very close.)
8.The Cars: self-titled (Up there with Cheap Trick's, for me, for incredible debut albums!)
9. Paul Stanley: self-titled (It's a childhood favorite, but I still think it's a great album.)
10. Black Sabbath: Never Say Die (I don't care what anyone says-- I love NSD!)
HM: Ramones: Road to Ruin (The loudest, fastest, punk band slows down a bit and still makes a great album.)
Welcome back Lynne!!
My picks in no order:
The Cars. Van Halen, Styx Pieces of Eight, Foreigner, double vision, the who, who are you. Acdc power age.

Great shout on Warren Zevon, Ryan. An outstanding artist and Excitable Boy is a fine album.
Yeah Zevon was on my list too, great record. The man was a great musician for sure. This might be the last mention of Zevon on SoT though (unless another panelist mentions him or Ryan pipes in again) as I don't think he's Pete's cup of tea, so to speak. Not quite good enough to make my top 3 list though, 1978 was a great year for rock albums
@@wolf1977 Absolutely, Wolf. Great to see him mentioned. A top table songwriter for sure.
Takeaways from tonight's episode:
1. Ryan, Lynne, Steve and Chris in the house.
2. Ryan's dogs are here from the start of the show tonight...

6. "Nothing makes me cringe but then again, I'm fucked up"
7. "Ryan Skow is making sure he's 'King of the Obscure"
8. "Someone borrowed your Andy Gibb record?"
9. "Pete stuffed me with 5 lbs. of pasta tonight so I'll make this quick cause I gotta go"
10. "I couldn't find a lot of stuff tonight because the pasta is weighing me down"
11. "And that's why your garage is such a mess...You never put anything back!"
12. "I've only bought it twice but I would like to buy it a lot more"
13. "Fuck that album. That album sucks...just ask the band"
Short but good episode!

Lynne, sorry to hear about your Lyme diagnosis! I’m a fellow “lymie “ and know how tough it is! Hang in there girl!♥️
Thanks, any insight would be helpful!
@@lynneversaci7649 My wife had Lyme at one point a couple of years back, not that uncommon here in CT (after all CT is the "home" of Lyme😒). With proper meds she came through it OK & no residual effects, but on the other hand we know others who weren't so lucky (they had the "chronic" variety). Their treatments/antibiotics didn't really work.
Not to scare you or anything, I think the recovery rate is really high & I've read that even when symptoms are present they can be fairly minor like feeling tired/fatigued, achey, maybe bouts of insomnia & can even go away on their own after about 6 months. Not that I'm a doctor or anything (I don't even play one on tv) but honestly the biggest issue seems to be getting it properly diagnosed so you can get treated. Seems like everyone reacts to it a little differently...Good luck! 👍

@@MochaDaisy8645 : WOW! I'm sorry to hear that, did you find out what it was? In my early 20's I developed essential tremor ( it's what Katherine Hepburn had ), it mirrors neurological disorders like Parkinson's or MS, it's not nearly as severe as either of those, and you can manage / treat it. With essential tremor, if I'm badly stressed , overly caffeinated or nervous , I shake, and sometimes I can't hold on to a cell phone or work my mouse . It is manageable, and there are meds for essential tremor as well. I don't know if you play an instrument, I was finding when I was in my early 20's - that the vibration from my bass would kick off tremors, so I quit playing. I would talk to your Doc about Essential Tremor, and maybe see a neurologist. There is a quick and easy test you can do for essential tremor, place a piece of paper on the top of your dominant hand, and if you have tremor - the sheet of paper will be notably wobbly. You should do it with a friend / family member present, and get their opinion. I'm not saying that you have essential tremor, and if you do, it is manageable. I hope you're feeling better, and that maybe your tremors were just the consequence of an illness, maybe you had a pinched nerve. It was kind of a tough call with VH 1 and Road To Ruin. I actually got those two cassettes when they were brand new, the VH1 album is far more revolutionary than Road to Ruin, Eddie really did sound like he was from another planet, I'd play Eruption over and over and I'd get goosebumps. It really came down to which of those two albums I enjoy the most, and it's still VERY close. Hemispheres , another fantastic album - I really didn't get into Rush until Permanent Waves / Moving Pictures, so my Rush obsession really started in the early 80's. I've been listening to Road to Ruin and VH 1 since they were brand new, I've never tired of those two albums - and those are my favourite Ramones and Van Halen albums as well. Anyway, I hope you're feeling better. Try to eliminate stress in your life - take breaks from your computer - phone. Get up, walk around, breathe. Watch Sea of Tranquility - I find Pete's vids super-calming - and The Hudson Valley Squares is always a ton of fun.
@@MochaDaisy8645 - I had to Google Campylobacter - I'd never heard of that until today. Try not to eat any more raw chicken, like; if it still has a head, or if it's walking around, laying eggs, involved in a protracted death-struggle with Peter Griffin, dancing or filing for a restraining order against Foghorn Leghorn, etc... probably not safe to eat. I'm glad you're doing better, maybe stick to beanchowder for the foreseeable.
@@MochaDaisy8645 : From what I've read about Campylobacter this aft, I think a lot of people have had it, and probably, more often than not, they just get dysentery . Your case was pretty severe. When I used to drink, there were a few times that I've had bar chicken wings that were undercooked - and I've been sick from them - I'm guessing that was a milder form of Campylobacter ( which I'd always just attributed to mild "food poisoning" ). I wonder if it's the same chicken that does battle with Peter Griffin, it's been going on for many years - how long do chickens live? also, that homicidal-baby, has been a homicidal-baby for what, 20 years? I'm beginning to think that Family Guy is not so much a documentary, as it is a mockumentary, like; This is Spinal Tap, or; Don't Look Back.
@@MochaDaisy8645 : " Don't Look Back ", is a Bob Dylan documentary from the 60's. I'd never seen it until a week ago. I'd always heard it was this incredible doc, that; even if you despised Dylan ( I do), you'd "Love" this doc. People, ( primarily, aged smelly-hippie-boomer-hypocritical-greed-heads), were always telling me that Dylan "owned" Donovan Leitch in this film, "he really cut him down", and "put him in his place". Dylan just comes off as the pretentious, egomaniacal, moronic, pedantic, untalented, bullying, selfish, self-righteous, self-obsessed-dimwit that I've always known him to be. That film is just another shining, steaming heap of Dylan's narcissism.
@@MochaDaisy8645 : I LOVE STEVIE NICKS, but I get why people find her annoying - her voice is often parodied - caricatured, usually it's as a lamb or goat voice, I find it funny, even though I do enjoy Stevie's voice. I actually don't like her bandmates, Christine McVie's voice, even though I find her utterly charming as a person - and I enjoy her work behind the keyboard, I generally just can't stand her voice for some reason.
UFO - Obsession, Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds, Judas Priest - Stained Class, BOC - Some Enchanted Evening, The Cars
How was the Ace Frehley solo record not a pick?
Right on! The ACE FREHLEY album is not only THE best Kiss solo album, but it's one of the finest hard rock albums of the late 70s...period!!

Blue Öyster Cult - Some Enchanted Evening
Ryan, I love that you mentioned Warren Zevon and specifically that album. He is such an underrated gem and he had tons of great musicians on each of his albums: Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne, etc. Love the diversity of this show. Thanks Pete.

"Attakh" is my fav Magma album. Definitely one to start with if you're new to them, more accessible but still weird of course. 1978 was the busiest year in terms of Live albums for me, lots of "newer" bands were comin out while the giants (Zep, Yes, ...) were starting to fade. Cheers!
Love Attahk. Spiritual music to my ears.

1978 is one of my top 3 favourite years of music. It was the year my favourite album of all time was released: Judas Priest's Stained Class. I wouldn't be watching this show if it weren't for that album. Other favourites are:
AC/DC: Powerage
Ramones: Road to Ruin
Van Halen: S/T
Judas Priest: Hell Bent For Leather/Killing Machine
Rolling Stones: Some Girls
Nazareth: No Mean City
UFO: Obsession
The Dictators: Blood Brothers
Dire Straits: S/T
Molly Hatchet: S/T
Blondie: Parallel Lines
Powerage by ACDC, Long Live Rock and Roll, Molly Hatchet, and the compilation Double Platinum by KISS.
Magma were famously brought over to the U.K. for some shows in the mid '80s by six times world snooker champion Steve Davis who was a huge fan of the band.
finally a shout out to the Ramones on this channel... there is hope for humanity!!!!
Lol
I won't claim to be a Ramonist (😎) but their compilation Ramones Mania is not bad. You're getting most if not all of the "hits". Maybe the catchiest song with the most "wrong" title? "The KKK Took My Baby Away". Or "I Wanna Be Sedated" - take your pick
@@wolf1977 if you want a suggestion for a great song that's not on Ramones Mania, try "Carbona Not Glue"
@@1967PONTIACGTO Just listened to it on YT, definitely solidly in that Ramones lane like their best tunes. Hey!!! Also less than 2 minutes long, nice & compact (like a Ford Pinto)...😃
@@wolf1977 hey, glad you liked it. If you are up for some more, another favourite of mine not on Mania is "I Can't Give You Anything".
I'm certain that Styx Pieces of Eight will be on Pete's list, or at least an honorable mention. Pieces of Eight is every bit as good as The Grand Illusion. Renegade, and Blue Collar Man were the hits, but every other track on the album is amazing. Great White Hope, I'm OK, Sing for the Day, The Message,, Lords of the Ring, Queen of Spades, and Aku-Aku. Other bands killing it in 1978...Queen, Van Halen, Journey, Little River Band, Bob Seger, Boston, Kansas, and too many others to mention. What a great year for music. And yes, I even love the old Grease soundtrack.
I think Pieces of Eight has the best B side Styx has ever done.
Lynn...."Magic," "Shake It Up"....on THE CARS debut LP??
C'mon, you're better than that, girl!
Great choice though! Love the first few CARS LPs. And hey, ....the other songs you mentioned actually ARE on that classic 1st album from '78. 🤓

Pete you should do years from the 90s and show how many great albums there were even during grunge and the early 2000s. 👍
Well he'd exclude pretty much all of the Grunge records right off the bat (as would I most likely), but I think like you there'd still be a lot left. Not as compared to the 70's (or maybe even the '80's) but still...
@@wolf1977 There is lots of stuff to choose from the European metal scene from the 90s,people don't realise how much there actually is.
@@gordy3714 I'm not a metal guy so that wouldn't appeal to me, but even excluding (most of) Grunge & (most of) metal I think that still leaves quite a bit
So many awesome releases in '78. In no particular order:
Judas Priest - Stained Class
Rainbow - Long Live Rock N Roll
Van Halen !
UFO - Obsession
Rush - Hemispheres
I would have picked Judas Priest's "Killing Machine," but I prefer the US version that wasn't released until 1979 as "Hellbent for Leather."
Dude, I never understood why Judas Priest were sued for a song that wasn't even theirs to begin with. But I think the controversy behind 'Stained Class' made me love it even more! But besides that album, I love Queen's 'Jazz' and AC/DC's 'Powerage' (the first AC/DC album I bought with my own money).
