  • The Turkish Invasion of Cyprus in 1974 created a divided Island. Turkish Cypriots living in the South were relocated to the North, while Greek Cypriots in the North came South. The villages that were left behind are a lingering legacy, lost to nature. In this film, we look at seven of them. For more information and longer film footage, see the links below on the individual villages.

Loved this video, haunting and sad to see abandoned villages, people's lives lost in time. Are these villages all in Southern Cyprus?

One of the problems was that because of the intercommunal fighting prior to 1974, most of these villages had very limited infrastructure - no electricity etc. Consequently, when the displaced Greek Cypriot came south, they weren't keen on living there. That is what I have read, anyway.
It is true that if you examine the abandoned houses you will see no plug sockets, and rings in the ceilings where they used to hang lanterns.
