(1715) Abus 83 Saved From the Trash Pile
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2025
- In video 1715 you'll see a nice, but filthy Abus 83 that Pee Wee saved from the trash pile and sent in. A replaceable core lock, I'll probably re-key it and throw in a pile of security pins to keep things interesting for the next guy.

"i can't beleve someone threw this away" imediatly picks up a masterlock
Yeah, but it's got the key, and most people don't know how crappy Masterlock is.
@@coladict I own one master lock. I can open it with just a tension wrench. Nothing else. If a lock is defeated by what is essentially a screw driver, its useless.
I just shout at some of the master locks I own and they open lol
Lmao
My favourite kind of locks, the ones I find discarded,,I get so much satisfaction when they pop open,Stay safe Bill from Wales UK :)
Yup. I have bought locks with no key for as little as $1. I pick the lock and can still use it. One of these days I will learn how to make keys for them.
Which bit of Wales? :)
@@Ucofatoffski A little Village called Gilwern near Abergavenny(the gateway to Wales) :)
This was probably used with a 5 pin key, I would guess the rest of the organization it was used for had 5 pin locks in some applications for the same key.
Just what I was thinking, we use the Schlage SC1 at our buildings at work, which is the 5 pin version of the C keyway. SC4 is the 6 pin version. SC1 Keys will work on the SC4 core, so long as you don't populate that 6th spot. I suppose you could drop a pin in that would come up flush to the shear line, if it were the right size to ride the ramp on the end of the SC1 key. Is nice that we can use either core 👍🏻
@@bradw0535 A flush pin would do you no good since the ramp at the tip of a 5-pin key does reach and lift any 6th pin. Keying it to that ramp is often done in challenge locks, but should never be used in practice because the ramp has low tolerance and correct operation would not be guaranteed.
i'm a long time watcher of your content, and many other lockpicking channels. as someone who is trying to learn lockpicking for myself, i found this to be the most accidentally-educational video i've ever seen lol. thanks so much for all of your content. even though i don't think i've ever even left a comment watching your videos feels like talking to a long time friend.
As a home owner I use these in the configuration shown. All of my doors and padlocks are the same key set, with master keys for my wife and I. Kids/ guests get non master keys. Since most of my locks are only 5 pin I can't use 6 pins in the padlocks. I even have some inside privacy doors with only 1 or 2 pins that will open with any key in the set plus a key blank. Granted most home owners don't even know this is possible. Thank you for the content!
Awesome trash haul! That is one of the old ABUS 83s that did not have the top access for the 6th pin and all of those drivers were factory standard. Those come zero bitted with 5 pins. I always add a 6th pin to all of my locks but that's just me.
Oh, I thought it was just more master keying with all cuts valid for pin 6. Typical application of that would be for the common gate in a building with a dozen flats, all 12 of which are allowed to open this lock, one staircase (of 2) and their own flat. Adding a janitor key complicates system further.
@@johndododoe1411 not a bad thought, though generally you dont see that in standard pin tumbler locks. KABA does remove pins for master keying but that is usually in locks that have way more than 6 pins. Actually there are a lot of padlocks that come with 6 pin cores but only 5 pins keyed up. American locks are a very good example of this, they do it all the time.
Hold and vary system of the nth degree. 😀
It had a 6th access....
I can't wait for you to take on that Yale I have one that match the one you machine open and told me it was beyond the scope of skill
Now all you need to do is file a new key, and you have a fine Abus lock with good security.
I love seeing the learning process for a new lock. I always feel overwhelmed and confused by each new lock I get, so it’s cool to see a much more experienced picker working through the same thing
Nice old Yale!
Great old video from Bill !!!
have a great day to anybody who see's this
Good save. The only lock I ever found on the street was an Abus. I picked it, made a key and still have it
Love those Yale locks. Found one on the beach metal detecting.
Watching Bosnian bill, learning that all locks suck, throwing all my locks, see them again on Bosnian bill’s channel
Great pick! Really encouraging me to be able to pick I Lockwood I found, it's still go the best of me so far but I'll keep at it!
Did ya get it yet? I have a CSC safety lock that FINALLY opened up for me after about 2 months of fighting with it lol
It did put up a good fight for a discarded lock, nice picking ;-)
Nice open on that crunchy lock Bill. I love those cool looking old Yale padlocks. I've had a large one since I was a boy but unfortunately not what you just thought.
One way of "mastering" a core (probably not the right term) is to have some cores with 5 pins, and some cores with 6. That way the 6 pin keys open every lock, the 5 pin keys only open the 5 pin locks.
Pee Wee scored on dumpster diving! Great picking job Bill!!
Great pick!
What a tough lock to pick.
I understand the Masterlock being a throw away.. But the Abus and the Yale are wicked finds! Looking forward to seeing you impression the Yale!
Yeah, that Yale is a brillaint lock, even without a key or any lockpicking intention. Its such a striking design that with a bit of light restoration, it would make a great decoration in the right place.
Holy hands bill, the blessed locksmith.
Hey Bill, I have seen you breakdown a fair amount of locks. How about a video on re-keying a lock?
I think he's done it. If not Bill, check out Deviant Ollam, who did a series using Primus.
My youngest nephew(6 or 7 at the time) found like 200 keys and 30 real old locks in a box that someone put out for the trash. Not sure what he ever did with them.
All you need now is to repin that Abus and you've got yourself a very nice free padlock.
Or make a key that works with the existing pins.
i make these fairly regularly, the 83 series with the snowman cylinder. some of the series are 5 pin and some are 6 pin, for obvious reason if you start your system with a 5 pin lock i.e an 83WP/53 then move up to an 83/80 you're kinda stuck with the 5 pin key.
Im starting to like your vids more now that you're becoming more descriptive.
I'll just turn that bell back on lol
I love these 83/45's for gates and dumpsters.
Ironic it was in the dumpster.
found a round in floor safe one time in the bin
Always good with a bit of lube after long down-time. Good advice, Bill!👍
I bought a small box at the thrift store with a good lock. It was cheap because it didn't have a key. It was my third lock to open.
I'm certain this was pinned to use the existing key from a set of 5 pin locks. I just did the exact same thing so my house key could open a padlock on my crawlspace, but I could give a key to the exterminator that wouldn't open all my doors.
Any advice for an Abus 83/45 that I bought in batch off of eBay that the actuater doesn’t pop the shackle? I have picked it so the plug turns but something isn’t right. Lock looks fairly new.
I have that exact lock and it also has 5 pins. But it has 4 spools and a serated. I got it in a lot of old locks from ebay and to my disappointment the key was broken off jammed deep inside. Luckily I was able to pick the first 2 pins to get it opened and rekeyed. Point is it had to of been like that a long time if not sold with 5 pins
If it's one thing I hate is throwing away locks because I see free pins that could be used.
It must be 'find a discarded lock' week. I was out with the Mrs walking down near the place where the boats come in and my wife says as we are walking "Oh didn't you see that lock on the floor"? I did an about turn saying "where, where"? She pointed and there in the gritty floor is this Abus 40mm padlock with the shackle cut or snapped. It was full of absolute 'CRUD' as Bill would say. I took it home and am waiting to see if it is seized or will open. The Mrs chuckling at me the whole time shaking her head.
No big deal if locked while lock is disassembled. I'm no great lockpicker. But I once bought an open Ruko padlock with no key (snowman cylinder). Since it was easily disassembled I could just fit in a shim (from one of those anti theft stickers) from the back. Got it disassembled in no time. Now pinned to a lonely key I had flying around.
It'd be neat if the person who put it together sees this video and remembers the lock by make and bitting. :D
Maybe put your Vitess cylinder in once you got the keys for it... Makes for a really nice combination (I can tell because I have one securing my bbq from theft)
How satisfying 👍
Hoo boy, being up early has it's perks
I am very new to this but you said the pinning had been changed to match up to a master key system. Would it be possible that the system was based on a 5 pin system and that would be the reason for the pin 6 hole to be empty? If your keys were 5 pin they wouldn't have the sixth bitting making that pin redundant plus your keys would not work on that lock.
Bearsback and Chris Capune have several of those old Yale locks bill! They usually buy them rescue them back to perfect working order! It's so cool how they open! You actually push up the key and the shackle turns with the key! I know you know this but others might not
How can I contact them? I would like to buy one of their locks.
@@hihu7200 they don't sell them they restore them for there collection but you can find them on eBay and if it's in bad shape try and fix it. There's some videos out there that will help
Does the lock core from video 1713 fit this padlock? It has a threaded hole to hold it into a lock like that.
Do you have a video of how you put these pins and springs back in? I'm just getting started. Thanks Bill 👍👍👍👍👍
its the opposite of how you took them out....
Nothing a bit of fine wire wool and ultrasonic cleaner can't make look like new. Although the master lock isn't worth saving, even if it was found in its plastic shrink wrapping.
Great video my friend 🌟⭐🌟⭐🌟😎
Hi bill you sent me things for my lock lab a while ago I never got a chance to tell you thank you
THANK YOU
Craftsman!!
Wth? I've found crap masterlocks in the gutter before and even a older quickset cylinder in the middle of the road but an ABUS!? Man, some people have all the luck.. in fact if it weren't for the "bad" variety, I'd have none at all..
It was a 300 core so SC1 key for the 5 pins, SC4 for all 6 pins or that could have been the master and SC1 were the regular keys.
Hey bill. Long time follower. I fell off the youtube machine for a while. How come u stopped taking challenge locks?
"An individual would not ask for it to be..."
I guess I'm weird, I've master-keyed some gates so that the landscaper uses a different key than the one I carry. If I would ever need to change the lock I wouldn't have to change my own key.
Nice lock I wonder why it was thrown away.
Maybe somebody lost the key?
first time I've ever been a video's 1000th like! Great vid.
Just startet lp with one of those 😅
If you think you can't stab a hole in your finger with a flat head screwdriver, you're really mistaken, speaking from experience!
Been there, done it. Those blunt edge cuts hurt like all hell.
Put one right through the palm of my hand.
I wish I had a nickel for every 83/45 I have torn down and rekeyed/rebuilt.
I don't think that 83/45 was very old...
@Bosnian Bill Are your top of the key way pry bars longer/ more stout than the Sparrows version? I ask because I have a Sparrow’s kit and they don’t look as big as yours. I know yours are a different maker.
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
Haha, my wife would throw my locks out easily. Lol
Somehow I think mine might just want to do the same.
funny - who throws out locks? people are mental.
Wooo never been this early!
Strange
Hello Bill
Can you please recheck the video at 8:47 .. 9:00. The reflections of the lights are really irritating, but I'm not sure about pin 6 (most to the right) being empty. In some video frames it is dark, and then I thik it reflects the same way as pin 5. In some frames i would think there is a steel pin inside. But agaim the reflections of the lights changing bacause of you moving the core I think to see different things at pin 6, but not at pin 1 to 5.
@@jregns I think you are right. It is like a soap bubble. And I think there is one above pin 5, too, which sometimes makes them (5 & 6) look pretty much the same.
No driver or key pin came out of the 6th chamber, regardless of what can be seen or not seen.
8/10
Everyone in my area seems to use code master locks, so dumb.
Your videos are good! Just a small request can you mark all locks you plan to pick? The reason i ask is seeing core movement is a lot easier to identify on camera. For false sets and spools.etc Thanks in advance.
I nee some more edumication: ABUS made in China?!
Some of them are.
Win u screw up and lock it up in the uper chamber i can still save it....
Hey I am totally down to take this 83 off your hands if you want to send it to me 😎 🔓
