My Grandmother Runs Her Childhood Train for the First Time in Decades

- My grandmother who grew up in England received this 1951 Rivarossi Hiawatha as a christmas gift along with many other trains sometime in the mid 50s, the trains were put into storage not long after and were moved to many different places around the world. She found the trains later and brought them back home to Canada. Unfortunately almost all the trains had developed zink rot or zink pest, this caused the chassis of the hiawatha to fall apart rendering it broken almost beyond repair. In 2008 when I was fairly new to the hobby she gave me the hiawatha in hopes that some hobby shop would be able to repair it but non were successful. In 2012 when I was starting to learn how to repair trains I decided to take on getting it back together, I remember spending countless nights trying to glue the chassis back together but I could never get it to run. I took a second attempt in 2016 and managed to get it to run around 15 feet under its own power but the chassis still eventually cracked so in 2017 parts were ordered and it was running by that christmas. After all these years, she finally got to run it again. Dec, 25, 2019.

Seeing your Grandmother transformed into a small child when she got to play with her trains is one of the best Christmas gifts you could have given her!
Her face even looked younger.
This is a very sweet and awesome thing.
Words cannot describe how touching this was. I bet that Rivarossi Hiawatha meant the world to her growing up. Nowadays, an extremely rare thing to find. Your grandmother had a very beautiful engine Harrison.

The smile on your grandmothers face says it all.
I was thinking the _very_ same thing.
You've made Grandma's day a little brighter.
The smile on her face watching that engine is perfect.
What a sweety-pie !!! Grandmas are the best !!!! I could see the gleeful expression on her face ! Even after 70 years the memories are still sweet ! I'm 75 and can relate !!!!
Save this one just for her smile, your grand children will love it. You did good Harry!
I just sat here for 8 minutes smilling from ear to ear!! Your one awesome guy! Love you man.
Thanks, it was always a dream of mine to get her childhood train running again. I'm glad it worked out and I hope to get some other ones operational as well.

Well done Harrison. Giving back some Joy to your Beloved Grandmother.
Thats a cherished memory.........I got a quilt from mine when I was 5 she made that I no longer have......but to see her approval with that smile is really something
Your Grandmother when back to her childhood memories awesome.
You did great. Your videos are helping me getting my grandfather's locomotives running better. They bring back memories. Trains bringing families together.
Great to watch your grandmother relive her trains running again looks like the older ones are Hornby oo i have mine from 60 years ago you must get them running for her mine are still running thanks to an older gentleman here in Winnipeg who got mine running again now I can relive my childhood again

This is awesome. Your Grand Mother face told the story. She was young again. This is best Christmas gift ever,
Seeing this in 2022 brings a tear to my eyes.
This is so wholesome and its just great to see your grandmother with her original locomotives❤❤
She has four other non working locomotives. I'm gonna try to get them operational again as well.
I'm with your grandma I love the old steamers, the gothic industrial look of them. They just look so classy, when train travel was an event.
Priceless memories with grandma. Cherish them
The last thing I expected to do was shed a tear while watching your channel, but today while I watch this particular video of your grandmother, I sure did.
I find this so interesting listening to your grandmother. ....you are one lucky grandson......spend all the time you can with grandma....telm her how much you love her as much as you can. I lost my brother from the airforce then my mom six months later four years ago starting in march. I miss my grandmother everyday. I lived with her after a divorce so my mom could better our lives. And she did just that for a little while....long story...I could listen to you both all day and night...
It makes me happy to see her smile on her face seeing it running again 👍. God love you for being it back to life for her. Congratulations on a Job Well Done my friend. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wish I could "like" this vid 1000 times. What an excellent recorded memory...priceless.
No wonder your grandma loves you what a lovely thing to do for her
You've achieved the rare and elusive 1000:1 like to dislike ratio
You and your grandmother totally deserve it 👍
That was lovely. You gave your grandmother a wonderful gift.
Aww. That's wonderful. You're Grandma used to runs her Train sets.
Keep this train and really take good care of it. One day , and I hope it will take ages, this is the thing you will remember your grandmother for.
What a wonderful
Memory you have just made
this is a nice grandmother and it is worth doing all this for her. Right, it takes years to make such a wonderful railway construction, actually, it never ends, there is always something to do.
Good on you for making your Grandmother happy. Well done.
A year from upload. and 15 dislikes. seems 15 people hate grandmas and family bonding over trains. I tell ya, you just can't make some people happy :/ this was the sweetest moment I've seen on this platform. I love this. :D
The crest at 6:33 is an old British Rail logo nicknamed "Unicycling Lion". This is a remarkable collection. Still running after some care is applied and not a bit Made in China ... it shows; it's still running. Very glad your grandmother got the pleasure from your work that you shared with us.
Your grandmother looks like she’s having fun!
So nice, your grandmother is so sweet 🚂👌
Nice way to be glad, nice to see grand mother, run the trains, , anf she must be happy to see his little son, busy with the trains , very interesting those train, wood work, électricité, diagrams, and ideas to built your table trains than,k my friend ,Jacques Canada

Really touched by the treat to your grandmother. Extra points for that, me boy! And, it seems that girls love trains also... Regards from Brazil!
It’s so nice to see how your grandma is into trains as much as you are! You are an amazing person SMT :)
Great video and excellent job restoring it back to operation! Quite a heart warming scene to see her face when the train started moving.
Keep up the good work and I'll be browsing through your videos for both fun and to learn to resto older locomotives, including my first 1980 Bachmann F7!
Grandma looks at her old train, through a little girls eyes.........priceless. Good stuff......
this video just made the world a little more brighter
Very cool, you should get those running for her.. very very cool.
I'm glade to see ur grandma happy seeing her old faithful locomotive running after all these years
Your a good grandson.
Your a good man, Charlie brown.
This just proves that model trains are for all ages
Although I just stumbled on this vid what Vesta and many others have said I agree, your grandmother is a lovely lady and been to Australia WOW
You’re such a good man! Your Gram seems so happy! Good for you!
Love it,I still have the O guage Lionel GP 7 Milwuakee rd. set that was around the tree Christmas morning 1955,and it still runs,I'm guessing my age to be around that of your grandmothers, beautiful train, and layout. there.
Great job! That probably was the coolest thing since you were born!
The world needs more joy.
Here's some.
You're a good grandson
Think great grandfather wanted a boy. I got a grandson on my 46th wedding anniversary, 1/4/2020. I had already sent one of my American Flyer engines to have a DC can motor installed. When I get it back I’ll put a battery powered r/c control in it.
That is one happy lady! :)
This sure warmed my heart. It was wonderful to see the delight on your grandmother's face. You know, in the 1950s it wasn't common for a girl to enjoy trains, but she did, and so did I (in the 60s). How lucky she is to have such a loving grandson.
You are a wonderful Grandson.
this will always be the best video you ever made... well done Harrison.
Pretty cool grandma I love trains to
“Careful,he’s a hero”
She has an amazing accent!
back in the 90's my stepgrandad (RIP) gave me a Lionel chesapeake and ohio flyer set lost it back in 2015 when Storage house got auctioned off along with 99% of everything I have ever owned. I also had a bunch of old tyco rivarossi, model power, life like and bachmann stuff
This is a touching video as your regular viewer seeing your grandmother running her childhood Hiawatha steam engine that's deep & the memories you both shared. This reminds me of my many layouts when i showed off to my grandmother. ( we lived in Melrose section of The south Bronx N.Y.) New Haven, New York Central system/ Penn Central/ Conrail/ CSX . She loved counting trains freight trains especially. When she saw my layouts I was reminiscing ,she remembered the fleets as I showed to her I had RS 1(AHM) TO FL 9 DIESELS. (F 9 series TYCO at that time) I'll treasure those moments as your moments like with your grandmother. No doubt and a rarity in our hobby. Thanks for sharing that.☺🚞🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
I do believe the green and white coaches on your rear tracks there are the same model I ride for my commute into Seattle everyday.
Such a great family!
This is a historical event
This shows you can be any age to play with trains
Gee, what really nice thing you did for you Grandmother fixing her favorite childhood train you could see the joy it was giving her, very impressed .
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with GFW Trains ? A young man by the name of George video tapes well, everything and anything that has to do with Trains !!! I told him a while back, when he did this special where I was watching the “Older Generation playing with the Younger Generation and I think that was awesome !
Apparently George is trying to convince younger people like himself to put down the Nintendo PlayStation or Xbox and get back into model railroading !!! And now I see this video you put up your view and your grandma playing with the train that belong to her ? Y’all put the icing on the cake ! Bless Y’all Both !!!! And you do have quite a collection of locomotives I admire that ! My only problem is that I have “O”, “HO”, “N”, & Z Scale now !!! But just about everything except from my Z scale is geared towards the Florida East Coast Railway !
God Bless you and Nana SMT been watching your chanel for quite some time and I love it!!!
you are a great kid your family should be proud of you
Well done SMT
She was probably happy to hear you fixed the Hiawatha
That's awesome your grandma had trains
It is so awesome you get to share your love of model trains with your grandmother. Take it from someone who has friends and family with 0 interest in model trains, it's better to have someone to share your enthusiasm with.
If I had a basement that size my wife would never see me! Love your Gramma b.t.w.
Enough to make a grown man cry
That was awesome when she ran her fingers over the trains. Can you imagine touching a toy when you were 5 and now as an grandmother seeing your old friend again with all its bumps and paint flaked spots again.
This is amazing! Nice work! You maybe made her year!
I'm a train modeler too, and you're making me cry! :-) Thank you: -)
Great job keep up the amazing work
Another excellent video. ♡ T.E.N.
Very nice video. I didn't know the Rivarrossi Hiawatha was made that early. This made me smile. Thanks.
It’s good to see your family members reminiscing on the childhood with things like this. I enjoyed this vary much. Reminded me of an uncle I lost. He got to see his before he left us.
She was probably really happy getting to run her Hiawatha
I love this video it is so wholesome.😁 Keep doing what you are doing because you make people happy.
What a nice thing to do for your grandmother....she looks like she is reliving her childhood. A really nice operating layout as well. Your train room is a model railroader’s dream. New stuff, old stuff, boxes of parts, bins of stuff! Love this!
I loved watching her face light up! You are a treasure, young man! The world needs more like you!
This is heartwarming!
That basement looks like an awesome place to hang out! Great job. Well done.
The world needs nice people like you
This warms my heart
This is one of the cutest, most wholesome videos I've ever watched. I love the feeling of seeing her mindset go straight to a child as soon as she started running it. Very sweet.
A memory you will cherish
For sure
Damn you probably made her feel wonderful and like a kid again, you sir have done a wonderful thing. Me and my grandmother have the same relationship
