In the film 'Across the border', four white South African veterans who fought on the border of occupied Namibia and Angola in the 70s and 80s together with thousands of other young white conscript soldiers reflect on their terrifying adventures. They were part of the elite Crowbar unit, a death squad responsible for killing many people. During the South African Border War, they fought against what was known as the Rooi gevaar (red danger), the government term for the ANC and SWAPO liberation movements.

As a retired US Army Infantryman, I know exactly what this man is describing and I would’ve done the same. An enemy prisoner who did or tried to kill me is only valuable until he no longer is.

We finally slept for a day after being in theater for 9 days and 8 nights only to be awakened again to prepare for yet another amputation. However devastating and emotionally crippling and pointless the death of a child was, I think that those who returned in a body bag, were the blessed ones. They, the brave soldiers, filled up the little hero’s acres in almost every little town by whatever name. Today I cry silently for them and their loved ones deep within my spirit being at the waste!

Indeed, Castro and his family enriched themselves with Billions of Dollars from diamonds, precious woods, ivory, and much more. General Arnoldo Ochoa, besides his military role, was in charge of the Cuban special forces units named cachibache, whose main mission was to extract diamonds from Angola, using the slave labor of black Africans, that were killed to the last, in remote villages. One of the many reasons Castro got general Ochoa assesinated was not only the military defat he suffered at the battle of the Lomba, but the vast knowledge he had about Castro involvement in the whole criminal traffic of everything valuable from Angola, the same with Abrahantes, the Cuban minister of Interior, responsible for the police and other state security agencies. He was killed too, because of his inconvenient knowledge. In total, several Hundred people were killed, from the Cuban military, state security, institutions, etc, and many more were disappeared, and many more outcasted.

Exactly, the same can be said of the USA military system and wars. Their veterans have largely been dumped to rot after their termination from the military. So sad . What a waste of life.
If you have not been in a war situation, please do not make any comments. Fact is goverments start wars, and individuals are called to go and fight their wars. In a war situation you are doing whatever you have to do to survive and will act accordingly. In order to understand the frustration of the soldiers in this particular war you had to experience the scenes they had to deal with. You have no idea what the insurgents did to the local population to intimidate them. Most of the men in this war was 19 - 21 years old. Go figure. The reality is that the SADF was a formidable force and we did kick ass. As far as I know communism has not worked anywhere. Today we are sitting with a corrupt goverment and a parliament full of thieves and incompetent idiots. If Cuba was such a great place to live, why do they drown like rats to get to the US? I do believe it is a great country, but their politics suck. Despite all the crime, corruption and poor services, South Africa is still a great place to live! It takes balls to live Africa.

During 1975/76 I was obedient to the call of the SADF to do by bit for my country as a medic. I was 19 at the time and though I never entered the danger zone, I certainly did experience the brutal hell of it and witnessed the distraught emotional consequences of the continuous line of “casavacs” (casualty evacuations) that made their way through the boarder hospital before being sent to larger hospitals back to the States (a name given to South Africa by the SA troops)
The American troops in "Nam" (Vietnam) referred to the USA as "The States". We also fought in "Nam" (Namibia). And for us South Africa was the "States". LOL
Counter insurgency is very different from conventional. I served with 4 sai during Hooper as a ratel gunner. After that they asked for 6 volunteers to go back and operate ratels. It was the only time that they told us what we were volunteering for. Out of the entire battalion only 10 people stepped forward. I spent 8 months in Angola and 5 months in Namibia. Namibia broke my heart.

my dad was koevoet, he never spoke about it, but when he was lying in hosp full of morphine sum stuff came out, i was in 101 airsupply, 44 para....but i understand now why he never spoke about it.... i still would of liked to know tho.... thank you for your service, all of you! i have so much respect!

@@johnpringle5199 they did their duty. It wasn't all blood guts and glory SA had put a massive effort into winning hearts and minds in Namibia. All dentists psychologist and veterinarian services where conducted by the South African army in the operational area. Troops involved themselves as teachers park rangers served in Healthcare supported agriculture and forestry the number of schools increased from 212 in the operational area to 757 thats 140 000 new pupils in schools that couldn't be accommodated the locals where payed R1000s for identifying a landmine so the communities could be made safer from MK and SWAPO insurgency. SWAPO on the other hand assassinated tribal leaders and local police intimidating their way into an electoral Victory once SA withdrew from SA.
Gotta love the use of emotive language to create an impression in the video description. Neither Namibia, nor Angola were "occupied". Angola had been embroiled in a bloody civil war since the early 70's, a civil war in which Russians (predominately advisors and instructors) and many thousands of Cubans troops involved themselves and also supported guerrillas aiming to violently overthrow the administration in the then South West Africa. This was the "red danger" referred to and the single most important factor in preventing the South Africans from granting SWA immediate independence in terms of UN 435. (SWA was handed to SA by the UN forerunner as a protectorate after WW1, in the same way as PNG to Australia) The SAs knew that they either fight the war on the SWA border, or on their own as the front would immediately move there. Those freedom loving Russians and East Germans weren't supplying arms and training SA dissidents because they loved the black man (ask those trained there how they were treated ;) ), they had a clear agenda to create a communist government in SA too.
Koevoet was part of the SWA police, not the SA military and only a very few SA conscripts were assigned there, normally as specialists eg sappers for landmine or boobytrap removal, or medics. (Yes our "liberation" forces were great believers in landmines and boobytraps and killed many more civilians they were supposedly fighting for, than they ever did soldiers. An inconvenient truth!
A "death squad", what does that even mean? Koevoet were a highly effective para-military force that killed more than their fair share of enemy combatants; surely the definition of a successful military organisation in wartime? These weren't uninvolved civilians they killed, they were trained soldiers, armed with a variety of Soviet bloc weaponry (AK47, RPG, Skorpion SMG, Makarov pistols, anti-personnel landmines, plus larger mines intended for vehicles, limpet mines along with that contributor to world peace, Semtex for demolition and boobytraps.) Left alone, those soldiers did not seek out combat with SA forces, they laid landmines in local roads, terrorised tribesmen and committed acts of sabotage to undermine support for the SWA administration. Classic Marxist revolutionary tactics.
The collapse of the USSR etc at the end of the 80's changed the political and strategic landscape suddenly and completely and it is no coincidence that Namibian independence and the SA negotiated settlement followed in very short order, Namibia 1990 and SA '91-'94. A working knowledge of Marxist revolutionary theory would reveal that these relatively peaceful political transitions were not the result sought by the liberation forces, but in the absence of their sugar daddy arms suppliers, it was the best result they could hope for.

Also in remembrance, let us not forget why this all kicked off.. a political Cuban despot (Fidel Castro) who'd only recently before threatened the United States Florida Coast with nuclear arms during the Soviet-influenced Cuban Missile Crisis, suddenly finds himself and 150,000 Cuban & Russian cronies on our doorstep doing similar.
What was South Africa supposed to do, but act in defence?? Any other country would've done the same.
Furthermore, the memories of those tortured Portuguese Angolan citizens chased into the West African sea and into refuge along our border with what was Portuguese West Africa are not forgotten, and then some!

I witnessed mangled bodies, maimed young faces, limbless torsos and somewhere from inside those broken bodies, I heard the tearless cries from broken hearts and broken spirits. God, I would think and pray, “What is the purpose meaning and significance of all this disfiguration and pointless untimely deaths?….. only to be interrupted by a radio signaling yet another landmine explosion. There was little time for the beer tent and idle chats with fellow mates.

I'm a black Namibia oshivambo speaking and I'm not a born free but i was too young to recall on what happening. As far as I see SADF was well militarily equipped and well trained. How come SADF haven't took victory, how where it ends?

Militarily the war was practically won in Namibia but SA had already agreed with the UN to give Namibia independence so it took an opportunity to use it as a political tool when it saw one. You need to look at the bigger picture Cuba and SA didn't have a reason to fight each other after the soviet union collapsed but both countries needed to tell their people back home something to make the war seem like it had been worthwhile. Cuba wanted credit for Namibian independence and South Africa wanted Soviet influences out of its back yard.

Their journalists report Koevoet as good and Killed Thousands Of Communists. These were our parents and elder brothers. In Northern Namibia and Southern Angola, there are thousands of unmarked graves until now of unknown people. The Koevoet idiots killed in public too. This is why Some Boers who use to kill people around Okahandja at a farm now at a location now called Five Rand run away in 1990 coz they thought the black government they will do as they were doing. The place is called 5 rand coz even if you work 6 months or 1 year, the Boers there only pay 5 Rand. My uncle told me the Caspirs use to bring dead body to the other side of the Five Rand railway line

It was not personal , you must understand we were very motivated because we felt we were doing the right thing protecting our home country. War is a filthy business an not a romantic idea as many young men seem to think it is. There is no glory and no honor in battle. It cannot be avoided in certain instances and you have to do what is needed. Just be warned that the emotional scars are permanent and very difficult to deal with as you get older. Best we seek a solution before we opt to fight, but if we have to get it over with quickly.
My respect to all my brothers in arms that served with me in the SADF. I will always be proud to be reckoned as one of you and as man that served my country when i was called upon to do so!

I was there in 1982 & 83 as Marine/Infantry in Oshakati. There was a Koevoet base nearby, so we got to know them well. Koevoet was police (therefore inside South West Africa, not constrained by Geneva convention as the military was) - their duty was to hunt down terrorists that committed a crime, inside the territory of SWA - this they did exceedingly well, using their own methods and tactics. The military had units like 201 Battalion (Bushmen, exceptional trackers) and 32 Battalion which largely operated inside Angola, where Koevoet could not go (since they were Police) - 32 B were even more devastating, but in a different way, as military operatives, using military methods and tactics. I have to say though - I think this guy is lying - he probably had some bad experiences (like we all did, and it does fruck with your head as PTSD), but he has added drama to his own story, that I doubt happened - I may be wrong of course, but what and how he expressed himself, is contrary to the way vets do when recounting bad experiences. No vet would ever refer to a 'gun', even for the benefit of a film crew - all of us that were there, to this day, would still use the terminology of the time, it's burned into our psyche. Other indicators are his facial expression & tone of voice.

The whine of the Casspairs carried for miles and the Swapo in the area would bombshell (split up) and this created the bizarre scenario of 5 armoured personnel carriers and 30 odd policeman following one Swapo. The kill was inevitable where heat and lack of water played a major factor against the quarry.
