    I just watched a video Linus did on bottlenecking 3 years ago... lol

  • @vaxel7
    @vaxel7 7 лет назад +5

    Learned that the hard way recently, I had ooold desktop with Core2Quad Q6600 2,4ghz overclocked to 3,5ghz, 5gb DDR2 667mhz ram and GTX 560 (non-Ti) and I upgraded the 560 to GTX 1050Ti and depending on the game some games didn't improve in any way shape or form like for example Guild Wars 2 doesn't go beyond 50fps regardless of settings and same thing happened with GTX 560 actually but some games heavily benefitted from that, for example DOOM was unplayable with 560 at like 20-30fps on low settings but with 1050Ti it runs at 50-70fps on Ultra (note - my resolution is 1280x1024, no miracles here, I just have old monitor). Now, I am a poor guy, I don't have the money to really buy latest good tech, so to upgrade the guts to reduce that bottleneck I have ordered (all used except RAM, 1050Ti was used too) Asrock Extreme3 X79 motherboard (LGA2011 is a dead platform, I know, but still it had some good processors that are VERY cheap now), 2 x 4gb G.Skill Sniper 1600mhz CL9 DDR3 RAM and I ran out of money for the processor BUT...for a placeholder CPU I ordered Xeon E5 2640 (Hyperthreaded 6-core, 2,5ghz->3ghzTURBO) for 20$ and it should still be a big improvement over Q6600 considering it's got twice better single core performance, two more core and Hyperthreading. I'm planning to replace that Xeon soon-ish probably with i7 3930K and overclock it and buy two more of those RAM sticks for quad-channel and I hope it's gonna be good enough for a few years, out of all those things the most expensive part was the motherboard, LGA2011 boards are still ridiculously expensive (at least over here, I'm from Poland). Parts should arrive at wednesday probably, I may make an update comment to this one to tell about improvement if there will be any...and if I'll still remember about this lol.

    • @akiraic
      @akiraic 11 лет назад

      ***** because is where the data come from. So the information is send to the memory (queue) and then, the queue moves to the CPU.
      But i don't agree with Cosmin B. Depends of what are you doing.
      For games, an SSD can solve this issue. But i thing he was talking about the existence of the Hard Disk Drive itself.

    • @Herzmacht
      @Herzmacht 11 лет назад

      Akira Ichikawa I think that HDD are pieces of hardware that survived from an "prehistoric" PC era. Their time is gone especially whrn you see what a SSD can do and realize the SSD is the normal thing of today.

    How can you identify which components are causing bottlenecks in a system ? The only ithings you talk about is the price but there must be a way to determine if you are getting less than average performance from a certain component.

    • @pht8835

      perhaps the WEI would be a good indicator of bottlenecks.

    • @sermerlin1
      @sermerlin1 11 лет назад

      ***** Or simply turn on monitoring and if your GPU is not going 99% and is going like 75-85% while having low FPS like 20-30 means it's a cpu bottleneck... (in rare cases it's unoptimised engine) but that's mainly CPU bottle neck. I know it because i have that issue. Per say playing BF3 most of the times my GPU (gtx 560 ti) is going from 50-90 while my CPU (Q8400 clocked at 3.5 ghz yeah not even that much OCing helps) goes from 87-95%, giving me total of 30-60 fps. It depends on map and where exactly i'm looking (of course vsync is off.)

    • @BoredErica
      @BoredErica 11 лет назад

      sermerlin1 I think that's a good place to start but it also depends on the game. If your game only uses 2 cores, it's never going to hit 100% cpu usage anyways.

    • @sermerlin1
      @sermerlin1 11 лет назад

      Eric Lin well yeah but still if a game uses 2 cores and ur gpu is wandering around 50-80% and you're having low fps means your CPU is bottlenecking. If a game uses 2 cores and your gpu is like 99% while having 50-60 fps that's than GPU bottle neck. You can detect it all with a simple monitoring. (unless it's badly optimized tho you know when it's badly optimized when fps drops don't make any sense or when you're having constant fps spikes and very low fps for something that should not have low fps... xD)

    • @OneNot
      @OneNot 10 лет назад +3

      Bad FPS + Low GPU usage% + Full/almost full CPU usage = CPU bottleneck
      (Most common)

  • @blobbowo

    so basically phos's legs in land of the lustrious and then her arms to the legs.
    (phos is a gem person and she got her legs replaced and then she could run really fast but the rest of her body is still like hardness 1 so the legs can't perform that well as the upper body would get destroyed. then she lost her arms, so they got replaced with... gold? and that was really powerful, but the heavy weight of the gold dragged down the agate legs so she lost the speed that the legs used to provide.)

      have you turned v sync and msaa of? most benchmarks have msaa all the way up or off in most cases i had the i5 4690k which is almost identical to yours and a asus 970 andi never had a problem til i played games that required a lot of vram when i upgraded to the 1080 i was playing in 4k all ultra with the i5 4690 and was getting about 40 fps when i upgraded my cpu i only got about 4 to 6 fps more i did hit a bottle neck on my ram when i switched to 4k 16gb of ram is not enough to run it if you use other apps in the background as my ram was constantly pegged at 100%

    CPU: Core i3-6100
    Graphic: GTX 780 (got discount on this)
    Board: ASUS H170M-PLUS (DDR4, 2133MHz, 1151 socket)

      Nikos Fender you could get a GTX 750TI. it doesn't need a 6 pin connector (just slot it into your PCIE) but you need to change your power supply (to at least 400W). Your CPU might bottleneck it though.

    Is there a rule of thumb? Should we be matching clock speeds? Is there a ratio, memory ratio? It's all well and good telling us they exist but what affects them most? I would hate to buy a gtx1060 when the CPU I'm using would be better paired with a gtx1050. That would be a waste of money, having equipment that isn't performing anywhere near at it's best.

    Somebody should make way for apps, games, and even the OS to leverage the power of a GPU upgrade by dynamically calculating the amount of the bottleneck between the old CPU and the GPU upgrade card, and then dedicate a portion of the GPU's resources as a "CPU upgrade" to make up for the bottleneck. This needs to happen..... a decade ago.
