  • Wearable technology allows a 24-year-old University of Michigan Health System patient with a total artificial heart to wait at home for a heart transplant. It's the latest milestone in efforts to replace the failing heart as heart disease rises, and donor hearts remain scarce. www.umcvc.org

    Is the box the battery pack and if so could one be built into a car or a pull cart to allow outings. I know if this was me I would not mind pulling a cart with a battery, one that may have an electric motor of its own to make walking easier. Also can these hearts be permanent. I remember the Jarvic 7 years ago and am wondering how much better these new ones are?

    Consider me stupid, but why do we not have a fully mechanically pump to replace the heart? Obviously it needs to be a variable pump but is there a way to monitor breathing to adjust the heart rate? We have so much technology, I feel like we should have these things already

    I'd rather be dead than hear that terrible sound every day and night. The sounds made by various medical devices, in particular various pumps, are my greatest fear. This is what I fear most in hospitals. I remember the fear of an infusion pump standing next to me giving a drip after surgery. The display glowing at night and the pumping sound made me unable to sleep.

    • @liamgibson4675
      @liamgibson4675 7 лет назад +1

      Twisted86 Limiting the tubing would probably be a bad thing. Think about when your phone needs charging, you have a charger and a power point, but your charger lead won't reach. So you have to get on the floor instead of being able to sit on your bed/sit on a chair while it's charging. That's kind of a bad example but I hope you get what I mean - Getting rid of the tubes would be a hassle in the long run because he wouldn't be able to put it on that table like in this video.

      Good question frankinshtein. The short story: Stan has a total artificial heart implanted in his chest. Two tubes run outside his body and connect to the backpack-sized device which acts as a compressor to keep blood moving through his body. Rather than blood, there's compressed air in those tubes.
