  • Stan Larkin got a heart! He lived 555 days with the SynCardia total artificial heart until a successful heart transplant at the University of Michigan Health system earlier this month. We celebrated with a gathering that included Gift of Life of Michigan, his brother Dominique who was bridged to transplant with a SynCardia artificial heart, and their cardiac surgeon Dr. Jonathan Haft.

    Seems pretty nice guy for a man who has no heart.

      Maybe you should get an artificial heart and that won’t happen

    A friend of mine had an artificial heart for over a year before getting a transplant on 2015. He’s about 30 now, has young kids and a wife act home. I did a bunch of reading up and from what I gather most people don’t make it past 10 years.. I really hope he and everyone gets to live a full life. Thank god for the advancements in medical technology or he would have passed away.

    Glad to see that something could help him survive. 18 months with an artificial heart would leave me quite paranoid about it failing though. xD

      What you said is true for everyone. We could die at any moment by accident, organ failure and all sorts of things we can't prevent. It's called the human condition and we all know about it, but some of us choose not to think about it.

    • @basbas63
      @basbas63 8 лет назад +2

      Tasos Kozi I fully understand that. It is more a psychological thing to me instead of what is actually true.

    Truly amazing. Within decades, we'll probably have artifical hearts that are smaller than an actual heart.

    • @kavigosai8552
      @kavigosai8552 8 лет назад +1

      what's the point of having them smaller though? xD

    • @real_armadillo
      @real_armadillo 8 лет назад +11

      Kavi Gosai Easier to install inside the body with a smaller incision.

    • @kavigosai8552
      @kavigosai8552 8 лет назад +5

      Armadillo you still have to remove the heart in the first place. and to install an artificial heart you have to connect arteries, etc. the incision would be the same size. and making the artificial heart smaller would make it awkward to install, due to the position of arteries and the size of the cavity left behind by the actual organ

      @Hannibal5812 8 лет назад

      Within decades I hope there will be printed organs ! Artificial heart is such a good piece of engineering for now but I wouldn't depend of a machinery made by a company which can create some creepy captive market like saw in Repo Men :)

      Usually artificial hearts work at 120 bpm by default (you can hear the noise coming from that grey compressor), you can’t do intense physical activity because the heart rate is fixed

      Now you Aeson Total Artificial Heart (from Carmat company) that adapts bloodflow to your activity level and much smaller device overall. Still outside battery.
      Aeson has allowed some person(s) to live over 2 years and restores health even if in critical condition. Ask Matthew More, first man with this device who had just before his surgery a cardiac failure.
      Progress forever please.
