      Raw signatures can, but it’s typically up to the buyer’s comfort level concerning the authenticity of the signature. CGC Signature Series, or even Verified Signatures from CBCS, are the primary recommendations I would make if you’re trying to generate added value via a creator signature.

    Great advice! I'm getting back to collecting after losing 99% of my 10K books to a house fire in 2011. It's taken me this long to really get over it and not just get depressed every time I would see books I lost. Many thanks to the community on IG and YT for rekindling my passion. I have found myself bouncing all over the place with my buying (not to say I regret anything I've scored) and I'm trying to really focus. I'm a list-making guy so I've sat down and made basically a business plan covering all aspects of the hobby for me--buying, selling, trading, storage, cataloging , graded books, want lists, conventions, budgeting, etc. Thanks again for another great video!

    I started my collection with exactly these thoughts about 5 years ago. My collection is nowhere near as big as others, but there are only gems. I am shocked at how many people just horder every trash $1 comic they can find without any system.
    On the other hand - I'm happy that many people still collect and buy the new books. Otherwise the industry would die, and comics would be worth nothing. So I'd recommend the middle way: Buy the new books you really love (and only them!), and spend the rest for back issues you always wanted.

    I like your approach and how you reflected on drilling down to the issues you need to add to the collection vs going down a long path that results in storing too many books and not enough of what you want most.
    Example predicament many face at first:
    Someone gets interested in a series, reads it, loves the art, and believes it will rise in value.
    Let’s say it’s Something is Killing the Children, well now when you go out to buy Issue #1, you must decide how many variants you will get, or if you should get a 9.8 run of the first cover issues 1-3/1-5/1-10. However, if you just stuck with issue #1 original cover and then moved on to another series you liked and prioritized the books you are after in order, you begin to see the value of starting with the top priority books only and then circling back to a series once you have obsessed about it less (assuming you speculated market condition).
    I’m not saying diversifying is the key, but to rather put primary effort into your top priority issues without deviating. 3,10, or even 100 books that are kinda cool aren’t worth 1 book you love, believe in, and know it’s market back to front.

    • @CoMoComicBooks
      @CoMoComicBooks  9 месяцев назад

      Yeah, there is no secret to it unfortunately. Lots of trial and error. So many #1s come and go between the ones that wind up being the big ones.

      Same here. I was reading and getting comics in the mid to late 70s. I wouldn't say I was collecting but I just naturally keep things I get. I continued on and off till the early 90s. After that I would only go into comics book shops sporadically and be overwhelmed. I've been back less than 2yrs but now I'm a semi serious collector. Man I really wish I could have come back just 5-10urs sooner. If I had then nothing I really want would have been out of my reach. I can get all the major keys I want but the mega grails I'm not so sure. I'm having serious doubts if I'll ever get a hulk 1 or amazing fantasy 15 ir FF 1. As for DC it's not that I don't care about them but I'm definitely nore of a marvel fan. So I'm not even worried about those. I do have some golden age but I'm not seriously going after them. I would be happy with one amazing Shomburg WW2 cover and maybe some Captain Marvel and I'll be good.

What a timely video for me at this point of time as I have been thinking of doing just that. My true passion is Superman, and even though most Silver age and up stories are not super expensive, I am on a tight comic budget. I read a lot on the digital apps but I have really been struggling to trim my list. Yesterday I cut my list in half, cutting 25 titles off my list. • @wg8561
    @wg8561 4 года назад

    I agree 100%. It comes pretty easy to me because I love silver most of all. I don't really buy much modern stuff. As for grades I usually go for mid grades on silver key issues. To me a good 5.0 looks amazing and it's a lot more affordable. Sometimes I go lower if I don't want to spend the money. For instance my MAD 1 is only a 3.0 but the front of the cover looks closer to a 4.0 and is very presentable. The difference between the 3.0 and 5.0 for this book was about $600-700.

    • @CoMoComicBooks
      @CoMoComicBooks  4 года назад +1

      I’m with you there William! I’d much rather have them all, then have the nicest one of any of them! Especially when you’re talking about extreme high grade silver. I tend to stop at 9.2s with white or off-white/white pages if I’m buying slabs, because aesthetically the difference been a 9.2 and a 9.4/9.6/9.8 is negligible, but the price jump is insane! Something you’ll likely here me talk about in a future video is presentation. If a book is technically a low-mid grade example, but is structurally sound and presents well, that’s what I’m after!

    • @wg8561
      @wg8561 4 года назад

      @@CoMoComicBooks I agree. What is the difference between a 9.2 or a 9.8 anyways? I bet if you send the same book in multiple times it will get a different grade each time.

    Focusing on everything pre-1985 is definitely the way to go, but in my case, I don't spend a bundle of cash just to walk away with one or two books. I only comic shop when retailers host 50% off sales, and I attend conventions only on the last day when sellers are willing to get rid of their inventory for pennies on the dollar. I have acquired Silver and Bronze Age gold doing it this way.

So, end of story, currently I go for short stories I really want to read or feel honestly attracted to, and gradually I am coming back to those days when I was pretty happy reading only what I wanted, and saving money for an expensive number that I was really craving for. I guess it depends on what you want to collect. Going all high end and makes it feel more like a business. Plus, if all you go after are old comics, how do keep the industry going? I know it's hard to find the quality stories today, they do still exist. But as soon as you start to look at comics as an investment, you've lost the point of comics.

    • @CoMoComicBooks
      @CoMoComicBooks  3 года назад

      You’re not wrong. Though many collectors walk the line between collecting what they like and what they feel is a good investment. Whether for trade fodder down the road or just to put books in your collection that you may have never though you’d be able to.
      It is always refreshing to see the collectors that don’t care about the flavor of the week and just collect what they love at shows. They breakout their handwritten lists and dig and dig. Vendors need as many collectors like that as we can get, because having a good show out of your boxes is a lot better than having a good show off of only your wall. Those wall books keep getting harder and harder to replace.

      That can be TOUGH. Some of the issues in the 200s are hard to come by. Happy hunting out there!

      Hey Wade , I'm in the same boat as you trying to collect a full Spawn run. If you have any duplicates or want to trade other comics for Spawn issues then maybe we can help each other ? Would be great to hear from you bro. I'm willing to buy,sell or trade Spawn.

      Hey Steve! Good luck on putting your Conan run together! I would be sure to pick up #1 and #23/24 as soon as you can. Those are the primary keys in the run and the most likely issues to see a strong increase in demand as interest in Conan and his universe builds.
