@Alex BOWER Zero started in middle Brawl, and played PM, Brawl, and Melee (he didn't get too far, only like top 20. I think). His main thing was that he wanted to be the best at Sm4sh right when it released.
Why single smash 4 like the other games didn't spawn bad apples? Smash 4 just happen to have to more popular cases.

Smash had its rage moments with brawl, 64, and especially melee to its just we have better camera equipment to catch the more modern cases of it. So no it wasn't the first game to introduce rage its that smash 4 was the first game when we had commercially available modern capture utensils to actually catch instances of rage :l

My favorite salty moments are when players quit the game with blistering speeds.
When you said to check the font for the percentage, you didn't really clarify the difference. Brawl had thick black outlines, and Wii U had the 3D effect. But other differences are:
- Brawl has a duller background in the portrait, almost grey.
- Brawl had dots as stocks above the percentage, Wii U had head sprite icons below the portrait.
- Brawl had the point on the left side pointing up, Wii U had it pointing down.
