    This series is all about video game characters who have left me in awe at their power, whether it's the ability to survive a boulder falling on their head, colossal earth-shattering strength, sheer dominance over the game they're in, etc.
    Many years ago, I made a Weakest Characters In Gaming Ever video about a certain hamster from Shining Force, which shook the world apart with its controversial opinions on the rodent.
    And now, I finally cover the game in the sister series featuring who I believe are the best characters from this SRPG classic...

      Omanyte actually does have some use in Little Cup. 100 base Defense is great in Little Cup, especially backed up by Eviolite. You shouldn't send him to tank Grass attacks, but many Grass attackers are going to be inclined towards Special attacks anyway. 90 Special Attack base is also great in LC, especially backed up by Shell Smash. 35 Speed is less impressive, but with good prediction, Omanyte can overcome that by combining a Weak Armor proc with Shell Smash and become a powerful sweeper.

    The AI likes to target Domingo because it's programmed to prioritize non-promoted characters over promoted ones (on the assumption that promoted units are stronger), and Domingo never promotes. Of course, he doesn't have to.
    Also, you shouldn't promote at level 10. You can, but the characters won't get as strong as they could be. Better off to wait until level 20 (which is the max level before the game stops levelling unpromoted characters); the resulting characters will be MUCH stronger. Actually, the Kane fight is good for this, because there's a group of gargoyles near the entrance that will give unpromoted characters max experience on every kill, so it's easy to grind the characters up to level 20 and then promote and grind them a bit more to catch up.

    • @LightsolP
      @LightsolP 3 года назад +8

      Also, a commonly missed insanely powerful character in the original Shining Force; GUNTZ. His movement sucks, so he needs a Turbo Pepper/Mobility Ring, but if he can get to the front lines, his Attack, Defense and HP are almost as insane as Bleu's. And he uses knight weapons, so you can toss him the Valkyrie or the Halberd and watch him wreck things.

    So I would like to answer some of the questions you asked in the video about the game, and backing my information is not only over a decade of playing the game off and on myself (since I love it and grew up with the game as a kid), but also in more recent years I've been a member of the website shining force central and using the sf1editor tool to crack open the code of the game and make my own personal enhanced version of shining force for fun. Because of this, I think I can answer the three questions you had.
    1) why was domingo so focussed down all the time? Well, the ai I'm the game has various flags for how it moves, and attacks, as well as a priority system for attack targets. It basically targets magic casters, and flyers more often then normal ground troops, domingo is both, so he gets both priority bonuses on enemy targeting. As you pointed out though, Max (the default name for the main character) always has maximum priority when enemies look for attack targets.
    2) does the samurai have a higher than normal crit chance? Yes and no. Crit chance is a hidden stat for each character in the game, some are higher, some are lower, but all of them are in the single digit range. His us marginally higher than the rest of the cast, but his weapon, the katana, actually boosts crit chance significantly, which is why he seems so much higher than normal. It's his weapon, not just him. The doom blade also has increased crit chance, though not as much as katana.
    3) how exactly does agility work, and does it just let you go first in turn order? To answer the second part first, no, it actually determines how many turns you get over the course of a battle. The exact formula is unknown to me and isn't that clear, but generally, units with higher ability get more turns, more often, rather than getting turns first. If I had to take an educated guess based on my own expirence and observations, the formula is probably something like "take a random number from 0-127, find everyone with agility equal to or higher than that random number, then pick the unit that has taken the least turns so far from that group". Here's a laid out example.
    Let's say the units on the board all have around 20-40 agility, except for one guy with a speed ring who has 60.
    First turn, it picks 45 as it's random number. It would then see who has 45 or higher agility. Only the 60 does, so he gets a turn.
    His turn finishes, then the rng rolls a 70. Reroll.
    Rolls a 12, it then sees who has 12 or higher agility, which is everyone, and picks someone from the group that has taken the least turns so far this battle (so anyone except the 60).
    That turn finishes, roll again, this time it gets a 57, once again only the 60 is higher, so he gets the turn. You begin to see what I mean.
    Of course, that answer for number 3 is not super definitive, but from my observations it's how it works, and is especially noticable early on with hans, and much later on with the ninja in the bush

      @@NovaBugDrayosix I did a bit of homework on it myself, thought mostly damage calculations mostly. >/////< My fav is Gong, because of his versatility. my findings for damage calculations aren't final, but from what i can understand, dmg works like (A-/+T) - (D-/+T), where A is attacker's atk, D is enemy def, and t is the terrain buff, which actually can get as high as 30% for either buff or debuffs from terrain. More testing is needed, but that would help explain how some characters would only do 1 dmg.

    • @NovaBugDrayosix
      @NovaBugDrayosix 3 года назад +1

      @@TheDarkJester420 yes, however in the default game, the terrain system is actually pretty broken and buggy when it comes to attack and defense buffs, so it's unreliable. There is a checkbox in SF1editor to fix it automatically, but without modifying the game, it's not really something that can be fixed. That is how it should work though. As for the 1 damage thing, the lowest amount of damage a character can do is 1 damage, they will always do at least 1 damage with an attack, regardless of the actual number calculated.

    Other candidates for the strongest in Shining Force are Hanzou, with great stats and cool spells to boot.
    He's even better in the GBA remake, joining earlier (Chapter 5) and can promote.

    Also another leave my mind alone tails related shtick would be him in a dead rising like game, except with videogame characters as survivors, mainly with Lil Miles here being like a super secret psychopath that if the right requirements are meet can be rescued, mainly is that it would be that you first need that by like around 24 hours before the survivor rescue and overtime, you had rescued every sonic related character through the location, then you are advised of weird undead cosplays the famed hedgehog around a part of the let's say megaplex and then you need to have with you: 1 zombrex, 1 medkit, 3 photos, one of the entrance to the safe house, a map of the mall to indicate we're it is and a group photo of the sonic crew until then, then you face him in a part that to fit the super secret status, is unmarked not even a part of the map, when let's say Frank or Chuck face tails, they meet him at a Chili dog eating contest tent, where he got like 3-4 survivors hostage crudely made to resemble Like Sonic, Knuckles and Amy, and that when undead took over he felt lost and that he believe they are his legit friends and that he will protect them at all cost even if the "attacker" is well intentioned, then the player char. Tries to snap him back by telling they aren't his his friends, and it like many before, Tails didn't take it well and gets on the offensive, when you defeat him, instead of falling to a gory death, he just falls exhausted in a corner, and starts crying, he calls for frank/chuck that he caused harm in a vain attempt to calm his grief and have a glimmer of hope for his friends safety, then wishes him/them to let the survivors free, there you have to first give him the medkit to ensure he doesn't die from the wounds, he is weirded out why they give him another chance to live, there you escort the survivors back to the safe house, next you return and give him the photos of the entrance and map, where he is given the option to go there if he wants, but he refuses, that he sees little hope due to his aforementioned grief, and then you give him the 3rd photo we're he is shocked in disbelief that they are safe and waiting for him, and last give him a zombrex since he chooses to go there by himself and just in case, and then as if it could be potential for a super scoop and gold achievment, back in the safe house you make a final photo with the entire group now complete for the reward of a mind melting 500000 PP points. The achievment could be called BCDFF (Best Chili Dogs Friends Forever)

    The game probably has a certain list of characters it will always cycle through in the same certain order (when it comes to enemy turns). It cycles through, saying "can I attack this character on this turn?". If not, it cycles to the next character on the list. Makes sense the Protag is at the top of the list. Not sure why Domingo would be really high on the list though.
    At least, that's how I'd imagine how the enemy AI decides who to attack on it's turns. Some sort of internal list the game cycles through in order. And certainly NOT how squishy said character might actually be.
    It is a rather early SRPG, on a lowly Megadrive/Genesis. So the programming would have to be kept simple.

    I'd say characters you need to grind levels for absolutely count. Afterall, a strong character with little room to grow is less impressive than a character that starts weak, but becomes a god after enough training.
    Though I guess that depends on how strong the first one starts out.

    So basically Domingo is the Jagen of Shining Force. Starts as a prepromote really strong early on but then falls short at the end of the game. Although he seems more like you need to train him first and then at level 20 he will fall off so not exactly a Jagen

    There is a hidden Critical stat in this game. All characters have a starting critical rate of 3%, aside from Domingo who has 4%, Hanzou who has 5%, and Musashi who has 7%. Additionally, the Critical stat can increase with levels slightly, ranging from 1-4 on most characters' growth curves (2-8 on promoted classes). Musashi's Critical growth is 18-the only one higher than that is promoted Gong who has 20 Critical growth.

  • @DoctorNovakaine
    @DoctorNovakaine 3 года назад +5

    A few notes:
    -Domingo is one of those characters that doesn't end up being fantastic, but is absolutely perfect for when you get him. That critical point where your characters are starting to be around promotion level is tough. It appears that characters don't necessarily "lose stats" on promotion as they are set to particular stats based on when they're promoted, with higher numbers at higher levels. All characters end up with better stats if you wait to promote them until level 20 (the max unpromoted level), but if you promote them earlier, you get the benefit of rubber-banded stat-ups more quickly. But whether you're trying to hold off until later or trying to catch up those new promotions, Domingo's tankiness and enemy draw are a huge asset. You'll almost always be using Domingo at the point you get him, even if you might find some characters outclassing him later.
    -After level 20 promoted, level-ups for all characters drop off to just about nothing, it's not purely a Domingo thing. The level-ups are somewhat but not fully random, and there are charts that show the expected stat gains per level over multiple iterations to prove this.
    -12:55 You should know better than to ask that question to the internet...
    -Bleu is one of those 'patience is rewarded' characters. He's a beast if you don't promote him early and put the time into leveling him, but if you promote early or don't put in the time, you don't get much out of him.
    -Musashi is a ridiculously good late-game character, a rare pre-promote that has pretty absurd stats to start and they don't really fall behind. Plus, his level-ups are quite consistent, so you're almost always going to get a good result with him.
    Shining Force 2 doesn't really have any characters that just fiercely stand out like SF1 does, but thanks to a quirk in the game that even ineffective healing provides consistent experience, you can grind healers to be WAY better than any other characters in the game. Seriously, you can have a healer character 10-20 levels above anyone else. And because level-ups are more consistent and linear in SF2, that means their stats can get kind of absurd.

    • @NucleaRaptor
      @NucleaRaptor 3 года назад +1

      >Shining Force 2 doesn't really have any characters that just fiercely stand out
      I dunno mang, Peter is pretty beastly once he stops being AI-controlled. Kiwi is also notable just for his sheer growth from a borderline Jogurt-tier mascot to motherfucking GAMERA.

    • @gryphose1849
      @gryphose1849 3 года назад +1

      Don't forget, iirc, of the four healers in the game, two can eventually be promoted into Master Monks, giving them solid offensive power on top of healing capability; a third comes already a MM, and the fourth you can pretty much forget about since he's already promoted to Vicar.

    • @DoctorNovakaine
      @DoctorNovakaine 3 года назад

      @@NucleaRaptor Peter is probably the best character in the game with no grinding factored in. He's not quite hardy enough to measure up to Bleu, though. Granted, it's a bit of an unfair comparison because the enemies in Shining Force 2 are significantly stronger than Shining Force 1 as well - stats wise, SF2's mid-game enemies are already around the level of SF1's late game - so it's sort of a case of "you're never going to brutally outclass them." But he'll always measure up or better to them, at least.
      Kiwi, sadly, is usually the first one to be ditched. Sure, she looks cool, but once she stops tanking she's pretty much done, and that happens fairly early on. She ends up with only marginally more defense than Peter, but less than half the HP. If her defense growth was like twice what it was, maybe she'd stand a chance...

    • @DoctorNovakaine
      @DoctorNovakaine 3 года назад +1

      @@gryphose1849 Eh, Vicars aren't THAT bad if you're primarily using your healers as, well, healers. You definitely want Master Monks if you want them to be offensive, but Vicars gain approximately 25% more MP, which means you can use more of those heals in a battle.
      Then again, the quicker MP gain might be written off as academic if you're leveling them way past your other characters, considering the linear leveling meaning Master Monks will get plenty of MP anyway, while Vicars may or may not get great attack (Karna gets like NO attack as a Vicar, apparently).
      Also, Frayja gets both Heal 4 and Aura 4, so even he's not terrible.

    Dunno if it was mentioned in the comments already, but an explanation for why Domingo is such a magnet: the AI uses an aggro system to determine who to attack, and from what I understand it's either character based or class based. The squishier classes like the mages and clerics; this makes sense.
    BUT
    For some reason, Domingo has a special AI aggro priority that is so high, the only other playable unit in the game with more AI aggro than Domingo is THE HERO; aka the most valuable target ever.
    Domingo can *reliably* draw aggro away from *all other characters in the game* as long as they're not The Hero, and this is abusable to high heaven and back. Park DOmingo in an enemies' face and let your squishy mages beat things in the back of the head for free EXP. As long as an enemy *can* attack Domingo on their turn, *they will*.

    I have a question, since you determine strength on different factors. What about the "Aptitude" units you get in the later FE games? Donnel, Mozu and Cyril? You can get the fairly early and they can be power houses if you invest in them. Well, Cyril is a bit more debatable in that regard probably. Also, unlike "Est" type units, you can get them fairly early on in the game, so there is enough time to make them useful.

    (And to those who think that comparison isn't applicable, the original FE probably came out long before Shining Force so Est *probably* came first)

      No, the true EST of Shining Force is Arthur, the centaur knight you get in Mariana in Chapter 2. His stats are SHIT when you get him, but he'll end up the strongest of the centaur knights if you grind him (and it's not even close).

    Not too sure if Musashi is better than Guntz. Tankier, having AoE spell + melee option in the Halberd (which cast bolt 2), and ranged with the Valkyrie, and while he doesn't fly, he only take 1 move for every terrain type. A mobility ring Guntz and Domingo moves at the same speed on most maps, and comes online much earlier since both join at the same time, clearing all those mountainous areas way before the rest of the team ever see action. That said, Musashi doesn't compete with centaurs for weapons, so it maybe balance out depending on your team
