  • These two major East Pacific hurricanes had some things in common. They both formed off the west coast of Mexico in October 2023. They both underwent Very Rapid Intensification, peaking as major storms with Norma a Cat 4 and Otis a strong Cat 5.
Norma weakened to a minimal Cat 1 with 80 MPH maximum sustained winds before making landfall on the southern end of the Baja California peninsula, about 15 mi (25 km) west-northwest of Cabo San Lucas, and about 780 miles northwest of Otis's landfall just four days later.
Hurricane Otis landed at peak intensity as a strong Cat 5 with maximum sustained wind of 165 MPH. It rapidly weakened as it moved northwestward inland from Acapulco, which has a metro population of over one million people.
