This man is beyond a living legend. Mind-boggling back catalogue. I remember when he was the Arch-prince of underground indie in '91, then King of alt-rock in 94, Lord of jazz-folk-prog-indie in 97, Ubersturmfuhrer of alt-country in 99, and Grand Chancellor of modern Rock 2001-today, all like it was yesterday
Jcushing5 We come to find out you are Stephen Malkmus.
No just a fan. I don't believe he wastes time on youtube comments
i liked the nod to american water in 99
he is great, pavement is my favorite band at this moment, but i don't know about these nomenclatures
João Dantas check out the albums 'American water' and Starlite walker'. Stephen Malkmus plays lead guitar and backup sings.
How has this fucking guy constantly made such catchy tunes his whole dam career?
Jeff Panetta genius
He just gets better and better
I have this same thought continually.
The best!
I think the only other artist I've liked since the 90's that has yet to let me down is Eric Bachmann.
I want to live in that room and Stephen sings every afternoon
Indeed my thought.
My history with pavement is long and complicated. Born in 84 I was always too young to know any other pavement fans. That era late 90s without RUclips I thought I was the only one who knew about them. Pavement has a special place in my life’s soundtrack.
I love SM's music and both Pavement and The Jicks have been consistently wonderful. This is a great song. Hope an album is hot on it's heels.
Determined to meet this guy someday. Such an amazing artist, since 1989!
Pavement is my favorite band after much deliberation and Stephen is weird special. Math.
I love this song. Am I alone in thinking he sounds A LOT like Jeff Tweedy here?
I saw him and the Jicks last year in Chapel Hill. I spotted him around Carrboro before the show. He was walking around and smoking cigs. I was going to approach him but decided to give him some time to roam and chill before the show. I'm glad I did some chuds did a selfie with him and posted it on social media. I'm glad I left him alone
Come to South America!
One of the greatest artists of eh, ever!! Truly one of the unique songwriters/musicians that's got his own style which is unmistakable
So Good! I love the documentation of all this, very exciting.
One of his best albums.
Glad you are posting some acoustic stuff!
This is amazing.
Instantly I'm in love w this tune.. 🎶❤👌🏼 thank you Malkmus!
Milkmus
I was getting anxious near the end of that zoom
2018 is gonna be a good year for music
Amen to that, Superchunk, YLT, Decemberists, Cabbage, 6 by 7, Parquet Courts etcetc
There's also rumours of Silver Jews recording new music
Confirmed with a horrible caveat.
Such a play on words I love this man
master at it!
published on my birthday. beautiful song btw
Love this! Can't wait for the album
What album?
Paul Schofield Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks' album. It's out this May
Thanks man, I really do piss out of the door of my studio/barn. I bought it tonight.
So so so so good.
beautiful!
Stephen only gets better and better
Thanks Stephen
oh my superstar
i love this man
Amazing!
Brilliant!
I really enjoy these recent (2018 still feels recent to me) acoustic performance vids by Malk, like the blogotech one. Really cool staging and audio quality. Just a really nice take on it.
I love this ♡
What a light
Fantastic lyrics
Love this genius
maravilhosoooooo
his voice hasn't aged a bit
Seriously! I can just close my eyes and it takes me back.
Thinking about you
Thank you!

Te amo
Great. Super great
I'm listening
♥
Songs so catchy I'd never know it was played on a 12 string if I didn't see this video
Now is the winter of our discontent
❤️🔥
❤
"... in a galaxy so far far far..." Does that count as a Star Wars reference in a Malkmus-song?
Light..
Stephen Malkmus, Jeff Tweedy, and John Dwyer are the leaders of Indie Prog Rock, IMHO
I would love the tab for this.
This is good, but why isn't the studio single version on RUclips?
Because the live version at Live from Here is better.
💞🎶🎵💕❤
Man, this reminds me of OlyWa in the wintertime.
Who's nook is this?? Gorgeous house.
What’s the tuning on his guitar? Open d?
Why does that spot behind your ear always itch when you finish playing a tune?
You said major duty lmfao
it makes me sad to see steve get old
best alternative to dying
Does the strum come on the 3rd or 4th beat?
I keep hearing,, Bob Seger “against the wind”, probably non intentional on his part.
the grace Kelly of indie...
Does anyone have a tab for this or know the tuning?
Gorgeous song, anyone know if this is standard tuning?
Sounds open G-ish. Ever figure it out?
Alot of Steve's tunes are played in C, G, D, G, B, e. It's a weird tuning but a single finger across makes up a major chord. If you read tabs there's a Google tab site you can find by searching Stephen malkmus tuning or pavement tuning.
I like this side of malkmus' songwriting: introspective, wistful, melodic. Ive not been crazy about his last 2-3 records--too jammy and busy. Hopefully there will be more like this tune--his best stuff was first solo record, Pig Lib and Face the Truth.
Pig Lib has 1% of One and Witch Mountain Bridge; Face the Truth has No More Shoes; it doesn't get more jammy than that and I love it all.

Steve just tell us the tuning, pleeeeeeeese!!! Never mind, I think I figured it out, awesome song!
Francis Cleary what is it?
@@millerjesse98 hey there! Yeah so first off everything is tuned down a half step. And then the 5th string (or the A string) is tuned down a whole step further from that, so it goes from a G sharp to an F sharp. And then the 1st string (or the high E string) is also tuned down a whole step so it goes from D sharp to C sharp. That takes care of the tuning as I hear it. The strumming pattern is really neat, he basically just plucks a couple of base notes with his thumb which is always on the 6th string and then strikes the chord generally once per beat. By my Reckoning he uses 5 chords throughout the song. The first chord you are holding down the sixth string on the third fret and the 3rd string on the 4th fret, everything else is open. Then you go up to the 8th fret and hold the sixth string there and you hold the 4th string on the 9th fret and the third string on the 9th fret. And then you descend so you are holding the 6th string on the 7th fret the 4th string on the 7th fret and the third string on the 7th fret. And then you descend again and hold the 6th string on the 5th fret and the 4th string on the 5th fret and the 3rd string on the fifth fret. (Strings you are not holding with your fingers are pretty much all played open.) The only other chord is a variation on the first chord when you are getting to the pre-chorus or whatever you want to call it and the 6th string is held down on the third fret and the 5th string is held on 5th fret and everything else is open. That gets hit for two beats and then it goes back to the first chord which is like a G chord with the six string held down on the third fret and the third string held on the fourth fret with everything else open. I hope this helps you! It's not exactly a tab but with the video you can make it out pretty good. I'm not sure if this is exactly what he does but it sounds nice and it's really such a great song in every respect, it's really fun to sing and play against the strumming pattern! Of course pavement stuff and his solo stuff has so much alternate tunings which you can fudge I guess but it sounds much better when you can get all the tunings right. There is a website that has tons of pavement and Malkmus tabs all laid out with pinpoint accuracy and all the proper tunings. I will see if I can put a link to that up here. It just doesn't have a lot of recent stuff.

Francis Cleary thank you so much
anybody have the tabs for this? I'm on my knees beggin
Stephen I like your song, your guitar, the view from the window, your t-shirt, and the lyric 'mason jar'. What is a mason jar? And why are you telling me to piss?
Does the piss go in the jar?
if you don't store your KBs in a mason jar, get the FUCK outta here
He reminds me of my bi-polar high-school buddy. Miss you, Todd.
First time I've seen him play a twelve string
Christopher Cameron It's only stringed w 6 strings. So, in effect, only a 6 string.
It's strung with 12. Close-up of fretboard at 2:34. Not standard tuning though...
leap219 dang, right you are. Thanks
Looks like this is recorded in his house, Portland?
yes....
That’s my friends dad
Does anyone know the tuning??
Come back to Sydney! Just don't play at the Newtown Social Club again. Man, they butchered the sound that night.
Xox
Here for the clear(er) lyrics
little known fact, jimi hendrix's purple haze is about getting lit on NyQuil
widely known fact, you're a stupid dumbass
Travis Rainey settle down there big guy
A strong reminder of Rage Against the Machine
Say what?
LOL
Ridiculous that Malkmus is not a household name.
He has followed his own advice and has not cut that hair since early Pavement days
Do you think it's gonna make him change?
Thurston Moore, JMasics, Lou Barlow and now Stephen. Why do they have to age????? Makes me feel old and I'm only 25.......
Because the alternative to aging is dying.
I always compared EssM and Beck. Both chaps had a way with words that communicated with me. I still dig the new Beck stuff but SM's music/lyric is dating and maturing better than Beck's. Mellow Gold though, that album is still better than anything that Pavement or SM did. Maybe Wowee Zowee, quite actually. That album is a whimsical Magical Mystery force.....Shit. I don't know.
Why would anyone come on here and talk about Mellow Gold? Aside from being wrong this comment is totally pointless.
@@_campesinox Why not talk about anything? I also mentioned wowee zowee. Most comments on RUclips are pointless. Now go back to your troll cave....
Damn guys he looks so old thooooo
Who cares?
Dumb comment.
i love stephen, but he's SO gonna mess up the lyrics on this one.
I could play that. Just kidding. Don't do 12 strings
It's the same.
This is cleary a song in response to Trump....hes not ragging on him -but its a clear observation on the times...
Joyable!!!❤
