It's a classic whine, been going on for decades. Dookie was mildly punk; people liked it because it was really good rock & roll and not because it was "real" punk.
The whole punker-than-thou thing with all the testosterone-fuelled rage, and shallow social & political opinions and observations, got very old and very boring when I was a kid--and I was born in 1977. Green Day make good sounding music and that's why people like them--it's not abrasive "real" punk a la Kennedys etc.
