My husband is American. He came to Cluj for the first time in 2010 (when we met) and 4 years ago he moved here for good. Some people just fall in love with this city. I lived in the US for 8 years and all I wanted was to come back here LOL. For the next time you visit I highly recommend the botanical gardens and the events scheduled all year round. We have tons of them!
Oh we certainly don't blame you Diana!!! We couldn't help but feel a sense of home in Cluj. It's so similar to where we're from in Nashville with regard to really neat coffee/restaurants, excellent parks, & phenomenal night life. It's probably the most at home we've felt in Europe thus far! Thank you so much for taking time to watch our vlog. It seriously means the world to us & makes us want to return to Cluj with so many people being so kind to us!!!😊

Every single one of those cities are on our list of places that we plan to visit next time we come to Romania. I feel like we say this about a lot of countries, but we really mean it when we say we'll be back to Romania. It's got SO MUCH to see & do. Thank you so much for watching our vlog Alexa!!
Glad you liked it and enjoyed it. Too bad you missed the many events that take place in or around the city. Imagine the East European view that some movies portray to be, and how it actually was. Have a nice trip!
Oh we learned that QUICKLY! We found out that we certainly needed more time in Cluj, & definitely can't wait to come back! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch our vlog!!!😊
You will absolutely LOVE it!!! We miss Romania so much & are already trying to find a way to get it back into our travel plans. We felt like we went a ton of places, but honestly only really scratched the surface. Have a great time & thank you for watching our vlog!!
YESSSS!!!🤣 We honestly sing that song all the time when we're just sitting in airports while we're bored LOL. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch our video Joseph!!!
Exactly!! It caused for a bit of stress at times just because we like to have structure in our vlogs, but thankfully Hannah's editing skills made these hurdles look seamless!! This was such a fun day though. We're going to be in a lot of places through the rest of the year where we'll only have a short amount of time to explore so there'll definitely be more content like this coming😂 Thank you so much for your support Eric!!!
Well it look's like you peeps enjoyed our little city, if you get the chance, come back cause there are far more too see and do over here, especially in the summer time! ( Major festivals and events that happen ). Much love!
Oh we definitely will!! We were really bummed that we missed out on visiting Salina Turda, & have heard EPIC things about the Untold Festival. We're already eyeing a trip back at some point. Thank you so much for the kind words & thank you so much for watching our vlog!!😊
I just arrived back in Austria, drove several hours from Belgium on the autobahn and was so tired I just wanted to go straight to bed but then I saw you uploaded another video and couldn't wait to see it. I wouldn't miss your videos for anything no matter how tired I am. I also use "Lens" on my cell phone, many people don't know this fantastic application that translates any language to English, so easy to use. Stay safe and until next time.
Eddy🤣 you're more than welcome to take the break to sleep though!! LOL. We're thrilled to hear you made it back home safely!! We'll have to check Lens out! As of now we use the Google Translate app but it's not always been the best 🤣 Thank you so much for watching & being such an amazing supporter of us!!!
@@ProbablyLost Microsoft Lens is a fantastic application, best of all it is a free download. I use it whenever I see text in a language I am not familiar with. So happy to be back home!
Mathias Corvinus father Ion/Janos son of Voicu was a romanian noble according to the sources from that time, mentioning his father and himself as vlach (Romanian), and that they have roman blood in their veins. Mathias mother though, was an hungarian noblewoman and he was king of Hungary. He is from Transylvania which at that time was multi ethnic.
Romania didn't even exist then, Transylvania was stolen from Hungary only 100 years ago, and the Romanians have nothing to do with Rome, they are Slavs, writing Romanian history is a science fiction... All the historical cities of Transylvania were built during the time of the Hungarian Kingdom
It is the first time (and not the last for sure) I see one of your vlogs and I can say that I like the way you presented my hometown. Also you are a cute and funny couple :) and yes, you were right, you only "scratched the surface" so we are waiting for you two to come back and do another one :) Cheers from Cluj-Napoca 🍻
Thank you so much for the kind words Andrei!!! Our goal of this channel is to explore new cities & show what makes them special, while also staying true to who we are & not trying to come off as though we know everything about a particular place. We love having fun when we're filming our vlogs & that's always something we try and show! And MAN did we have fun in Cluj!!! We can't wait to come back & visit again. Thank you so much again for being so kind & for watching our vlog Andrei!! We're incredibly grateful for you taking the time to watch!!😊
Thank you for the background on it!! We'd seen a few different takes online as to who he was/where he was from/how he's perceived, etc. We just didn't want to say he was something & others see him differently ya know😂 thank you so much for watching!!
Thank you for clarifying Luca! We got a bit more detail on the history of the area after we left from some people on our train who were from the region. It's fascinating to hear about all of the complex dynamics that make that area what it is now, & how peoples opinions differ. It's something that we were never taught about in our education growing up in America, but is hugely important to Romania/Hungary. It just goes to show us that there's so much more in the world that we have to learn. Thank you so much for watching our vlog & giving us some background on this Luca!!!
@@3dfxvoodoocards6 Mathias Corvin's father was János Hunyadi (Johannes Hunyadi). His father, Mathias Corvin's grandfather was Sigmound Luxemburg. Nothing vlach or romanian.

We will ABSOLUTELY take you up on that Julia!!! We had an awesome time in Cluj, even if the weather gave us a bit of difficulty🤣 If anything it just made us want to come back more. We already know we're going to visit Romania again because there's still so much more we haven't seen, but we've heard amazing things about places outside of Cluj as well. It's such an awesome place. We'll definitely add it to our list for next time we visit!! That was probably the worst part about our time in Cluj. We only stayed for two nights which is ABSOLUTELY NOT enough time😂 but hey, that just means we'll be back!! Thank you so much for watching our vlog & giving your recommendation Miles!!!
Thank you for pointing that out Lorand!!! We didn't find that out until the end of the day of filming & hated that we didn't get to include it. But we'll just have to return & dive a bit deeper into Cluj & Corvinus!! Thank you so much for watching our vlog!!😊

Odd to see your hometown on RUclips randomly. The reason it's expensive (the most expensive city in Romania) is due to the economic boom it had in the last decade. The local authorities encouraged tech companies to develop here with lower taxes, and since it's also a university center these two went hand in hand. You've got high income earners in a low price area(at that time) so the prices started to go up year by year. Not to mention we're facing a 15% inflation atm. Meanwhile the rest of the non tech salaries have stayed much lower (can't compete). So for anyone not working a well paid corporate job its a bit of an issue. The city also developed well in the last 2 decades that's for sure from the infusion of capital but the income inequality gets worse every year.
Hi Mihai!! Thank you very much for taking the time to watch our video & provide some context! That's kind of the hard part about cities hitting a growth spurt. On one hand it can be incredibly beneficial for the city with regard to attracting outside investment, tourism, etc. but on the other hand it can really be felt by the local population. That's the goal of our channel though honestly. We make our videos in order to encourage people who might've never heard of Cluj or thought of going, to make plans to visit one day in an effort to help boost tourism & the local economy in whatever tiny way we can. We just really enjoy doing our small part to show how great these towns & cities are. Thank you so much again for giving some context & watching our vlog Mihai. We greatly appreciate it!!!😊

Hi Guys! Great video! Keep up the good work and keep improving you vlog. I would suggest to buy a camera with a little bit more "image stabilization", otherwise, watching the vlog on a big screen can end up make you quite dizzy :) Greetings from Cluj!
Hi Dan!!! You're ABSOLUTELY right. Our camera has in-body stabilization, but when we began filming that day, for some reason it'd been turned off. So we filmed basically all the way up to the climb to Cetățuia Park before we realized it. That's why after that climb, everything is MUCH more stable. And it's also why before we start filming for the day, we ALWAYS check to make sure the SteadyShot is Active😂 Thank you so much for the kind words & for watching our vlog Dan. It really means the world to us & hopefully we can make it back to Cluj at some point to see MUCH more!!
Unfortunately, the current exhibition at the history museum, although more modern than the former one, is only a figment of what can be. Not all the artifacts from the main exhibition are shown, and not from all the eras. The museum is in restoration for a very long time. We hope the museum will get restored properly in the near future. I am glad you are interested in the history of these places. You really needed a cool guide for Cluj to enjoy it fully, even if it is only for a day.
That's so sad to hear. The first floor of the museum was okay, but the second floor blew us away with how well-done it was. It looked as though the building was under construction on the inside so maybe they're working to expand it? In any case, we didn't plan on visiting but did so kind of spur of the moment. We're definitely glad we did. We're hoping to get back to Cluj in the future & have a guide to help us because that always makes the experience much more enjoyable! @@ProbablyLost my pleasure, the only thing I can say to you is that you should spend more time like you say in your video so you can interact with the locals and not just rush from tourist point to tourist point, have you seen bald and bankrupt? he does random stuff and the video ends up entertaining even if he doesn't visit the "important" places of a city, people get the real vibe of how the people are, one time he even went with a russian drunk to his home and played guitar until the morning :)) so it's less of a civilised trip advisor type vibe but an amazing unique thing, thanks for visiting our country Romania, we're definitely underrated and I hope us romanians get your channel up because we like hearing foreigners talk about our country!

Cluj used to be part of Hungary for around 1000 of years, right up until the end of ww I, and Mathias is the only hungarian king born in Transylvania or at least Cluj. The fun addition to this is that he was 1/4 romanian too. The statue was raised when under hungarian rule, and probably was kept standing because of the high percentage of hungarians living in Cluj and also his romanian background. Most of the historical buildings you visited were actually built in hungarian/austro-hungarian times. It's a complex history, with a lot of turmoil, but I am hoping that it will get better with time.
Thank you very much for providing some insight on it Tamás!! That's kind of how these things work honestly. It will be a bit contention & a topic of debate for a couple of generations, but eventually it calms down. We honestly don't have really any idea of who's right or who's wrong, but we definitely know just how proud the people are & how hospitable everyone was to us. We absolutely loved our short time in Cluj. Thank you so much again for watching & giving us a bit more background!!!
Maybe 1000 years in the Hungarian calendar, but in reality, between 1526 and 1920 (400 years), Hungary did not exist as an independent state and did not have its own capital. Transylvania was a principality and an austrian province for 4 centuries👍👍👍
Is very simple why Mathias called also Mátyás is in the center of Cluj Napoca also called Kolozsvár. Read a little bit history guys. Transilvania was hundreds of years part of Hungary or alied with Hungary. In Romania there are more than 1.1 million hungarians in the center of the country called Székelyföld which stands for Seklerland. Also Mathias King was born in Cluj Napoca. Actually the city was till 1970 populated in majority by hungarians. Nowdays is a cultural hub for a lot of etnicities.
Matia Corvin, the famous king of Hungary, was of Romanian origin, being the son of Iancu de Hunedoara. "A Hungarian chronicle by Bonfini says that Iancu Corvin the Valah, the father of the great king Matei Corvin, was a Wallach - Romanian ( Wallachia - the medieval name of the region south of the Carpathians in Romania. Muntenia today) , from the "Plaiul Oii", and the Romanian legends identify this plai -field with the village of Corbi in Arges county-Romania". The Romanian Iancu de Hunedoara (b. 1407 - d. August 11, 1456, ) was a dominant personality of Romanian history from the 15th century. He was voivode of Transylvania in 1441, governor of the kingdom of Hungary between 1446-1453, then supreme captain of Hungary and Transylvania between 1453-1456.
We actually hadn't heard about the gypsies until after we left, but it's all we talked about for a few days!!! I wish we could've gone into the little town that they all live in. That'd have been such a cool experience!!!!
Oh we definitely will!!! We were supposed to get some traditional Romanian food for dinner at Hanul Dacilor but unfortunately the weather didn't allow it🤣 It just gives us more reason to come back! Thanks so much for watching our vlog Vasile!!
Mathius Rex was king of the Hungarian empire. Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvar in Hungarian) was his home town. All of Transilvania was Hungarian land until the treaty of Trianon after WW1. Ergo there is a statue of him in his hometown.
@@Eleniel13 If you are hungarian, we all know why your history leassons are so different, but let's not forget that hungarians decend from nomadic tribes that came to this lands way after our ancestors already lived here... Dacinas lived here and romans visited also...
@@dorinvesa1109 I am not disputing the history before hungarians settled here, that is something normal and accepted, just that there are some discrepancies between the 2 nations about what happened after hungarian settlement. I do agree that Transilvania was kind of apart from Hungary but at the same time it was still ruled by hungarians with a majority of hungarian citizens as opposed to Moldova and Tara Romaneasca (Valahia) which were under romanian rule with a majority of romanian citizens.
Where did you come up with 1000 years ? From which I know you lost you conquered Transylvania over 200 years starting since 800s. Then you lost it to the Ottomans in the 16 th century and after that it was a province under the direct rule of the Austrian Empire from which we got it in 1918. So actually for how long did you have Transylvania? For a few hundred years. Learn mathematics before you post something online.
Hungary sometimes doesnt like Romania that much that is why Mathias Corvinus cant possibly be half Romanian.... lol. He did speak Romanian quite well however =). And that is not even some definitive argument but I wont get into details, unless I trigger someone and they make me =). P.s. we still like Hungary however ... even if they charge me 3Euro for a very basic coffee near the border =) 😘
That's hilarious🤣 Believe it or not, I'm all for a 3euro coffee at this point. We're in Ljubljana, Slovenia & we're noticing prices REALLY start to rise😂 Thank you so much for watching Adrian!!
Im only trigger by the fact that you say Hungary is the only one not liking Romania. I think its pretty clear in our shared history that we all had envy and hatred towards each other, both done atrocities against each other(war crimes) and this fuckin hates only still lives because the politicians keep making loaded statements to hype the voters for a new election. Its really fuckin sad you think this, im sure the average hungarian from Cluj would disagree with you.
@@zebrarusz92 Im definitely not talking about ordinary or ethnic Hungarians (be it from Romania or Hungary), some of which I grew up with, and I never put Romanian friends in any way above Hungarian friends. And it felt natural for me to hear Hungarian language being spoken even if I didnt understand but just a few words. That being said...on the other hand its also pretty clear that often Budapest politics are pushing certain rhetorics and they can take some roots in some more "receptive" regions like lets say parts of Harghita. But its all good my frien... I like Hungarians and I like Hungarian culture, and Im sure most or at least many Hungarians feel the same about their Romanian neighbors even if they are from near or from Budapest. Cheers.
How long has this name Cluj-Napoca existed? And how long have Romanians lived in this ancient Hungarian city? Isn't this a Ceausist and Nationalist-Communist heritage which is now slyly silenced here?! This was an ancient Hungarian castle and city for a thousand years, whose ancient names were Kolozs and Kolozsvár! In the 19th century, the population of Kolozsvár was still 90% Hungarian, but even after Trianon, it was a city inhabited by more than 70% Hungarians! And by now, they have already destroyed and driven away the Hungarians, especially with the intentional resettlement of many tens of thousands of Romanians of the last 50 years, that the Hungarian population is barely 15%, and the Romanians have been falsifying the history of the city ever since! You are not ashamed of showing these chauvinist Romanian lies to the world, about these huge medieval Hungarian monuments in Kolozsvár as if they were built by Romanians, but in fact they were built jointly by Hungarians and Saxons when there were no Romanians living here yet?!
The name Napoca existed since ancient time because it was a Dacian name. The Romans conquered Dacia and they called the city Municipium Aelium Hadrianum Napoca. Then in 1213 the first mention of the place was Castrum Clus named by the Saxons hence the name Cluj in Romanian. And what ancient Hungarian city are you talking about since ancient is not the same as medieval. Hungarians forced the Romanians out of the cities and falsely named the cities with Hungarian names. The history finally did justice to the Romanians after the referendum in 1918 which allowed Transylvania to unite with Romania. Trianon just ratified what the unanimity agreed upon. Even your own representative Joseph de Fay agreed to the unification in front of the Romanian Parliament, promising that the Hungarians in Transylvania would be a pillar for the Greater Romania! Learn the right history and not whatever they feed you at home .
Hi Bobi! We definitely weren't crying about the price of breakfast, just saying that it was a bit more than we expected (but that's not the restaurants fault it's ours...and to be honest it was 100% worth the price). One thing that definitely changed in our plan for the day was that we planned on going to Memo 10 for lunch, but the breakfast was so good/filling that we weren't even slightly close to hungry😂 That also goes to show that as we said it the video, most of the day didn't totally go to plan (like our dinner plans to get traditional food at Hanul Dacilor). So in total, the breakfast turned out to be a great bargain when factoring in not getting lunch, we just didn't know that would be the case at the time of filming. Thank you very much for watching our vlog Bobi!!!😊
Cluj had been a Hungarian city until 25 October 1944 when Romanians occupied it. Hungarians only built everything, Romanians only claimed its theirs. The statue had been a subject of dispute and was miraculously spared by a former Prime Minister from demolition by Romanians, who destroy anything they touch. One of the fighters you see there is Duke Paul (Pavel Chinezu - a regional uttering of Cneaz, Slavic for Duke). He fought in 1479 on the Bread Field (Campia Painii). He massacred Turks and in the end drunk and lost his mind, dancing with two Turk corpses under armpits and a third one hung down by chalvars (pants) from his teeth.
Excuse me , but you are telling lies. The name Napoca is Dacian , the city being built on Dacian and Roman ruins . After the conquest of Dacian by the Romans the city was named Municipium Aelium Hadrianum Napoca. In the 1213 is first mentioned as Castrum Claus by the Saxons hence the name Cluj in Romanian. You Hungarians falsely came and named it Cluj as Kolosvar. Romanians didn’t occupy anything in 1944 we just hot back what was ours. You were the one that occupied Transylvania during the ww2 after the Dictat of Vienna between Hitler and Stalin. Transylvania became ours in 1918 after rightful referendum and was ratified by the Trianon. So stop spreading lies!
So what if we got the name Romania later? There were the 3 provinces that spoke the same language , Romanian, and all 3 wanted to become a country for centuries. Only because that wasn’t possible because of so many obstacles doesn’t mean that they are 3 totally different countries. You forgot that Michael the Brave made the first unification of the 3 provinces in 1600. Hungary lost the battle of Mohacs and lost also Transylvania to the Ottomans and later the Austrians conquer it from the Ottomans and it was under the direct rule of the emperor. If you want to look for something look in Asia where you came from.
King Matthias Hunyadi was Hungarian (like his father Janos Hunyadi). If he was romanian, why did he fight against his own people (vlachs)? Maybe he had a vlach relative in his family, but that doesn't mean he was Romanian. Romanians are well known for falsifying history.
Actually on the contrary! The Hungarians love to falsify history! King Matthias Hunyady was actuality called Matei Corvin and Corvin comes from corb meaning raven. His father was Iancu of Hunedoara hence Hunyady in Hungarian. During Iancu of Hunedoara rule the interest of the 3 different romanian provinces were different since he fought against his own people to conquer it to ensure protection from the threat of the Ottoman Empire.
What 1000 years? What math did you learn and where? Transylvania was conquered over 200 years starting with 800s and that makes 1000! Later you lost it to the ottoman empire after the battle of Mohacs in 16 th century and later it became a province under the direct rule of the Austrian empire! We got it from the Austrians not from you! Just because the empire was called Austro- Hungarian empire still didn’t make it yours! Stop with the whining! It’s pathetic that you can’t accept the truth!
so, all the old town (where you were) and all the old buildings(by old i mean classy) in some neighbourhoods, have been built by hungarian architects, well documented, facts not fiction, the St. Michael cathedral built in XVth century by hungarians for Matyas ofc with the popes orders, and Matyas's statue also done later in XIX by a hungarian sculptor. Their play is to claim the origin to make it seem it is all done by them. "some" brainwashed by their late dictator claim things that are not true, cause that's what their parents thought them, cause they have no culture, no gastronomy, and like to steal words even from other languages, their lexicon being very poor. I let you decide. I rest my case. Also ask in the west who are known as thieves, liars and have a bad rep. Also almost all the minorities, schwabs, saxons, jws, hungarians have almost all moved out of this corrupt country that took their property. So yea you decide. history repeats itself lying and thieving is their bread and butter.
Who talks about stealing?😂😂😂😂 You, who came from Asia and stole the land of other people? Besides Napoca is a Dacian name of a Dacian place. Later the Romans built a city calling it Municipium Aelium Hadrianum Napoca. When the Saxons arrived in Transylvania they called it Clus meaning closed, from where the Romanians got the word Cluj. Learn history first and stop babbling nonsense. Culture we have plenty and much older then yours. Look at Cucuteni and Hamangia cultures. Take for example the Treasure from Oradea where it was found the skeleton of a woman with 169 gold rings, a foremother of Romanians since the paleogenetics of Romanians show 45-50% of genetics of Romanians come from generations living 6-7 and even 8000 years ago. We don’t “steal” any words since we have a very rich language and certainly not from Hungarian language which is very hard to learn and sounds funny. Our gastronomy is very rich comparing to that of Hungarian gastronomy. Ask yourself before speaking how come in the 1850 the majority in Budapest was German and now they are nonexistent. The same with the Jews and Austrians.

Hi.
There is a statue of Mathias Corvin in the city Square because he was born in the city. His father was romanian.
Watch out, budojszekely might come any moment now, he's gonna give you a nationalist hungarian lesson and give you some weird youtube links... 😂
@@Zdamaneta he identified as ardelean tho not Romanian, Romanian didn’t even exist back then.
@@Qwerty1637i no 💩 Sherlock, of course he identified as an ardelean since Romania didn't exist yet 🤣
A little correction. Mathias mother was German, not Hungarian!

Unfortunately, the current exhibition at the history museum, although more modern than the former one, is only a figment of what can be. Not all the artifacts from the main exhibition are shown, and not from all the eras. The museum is in restoration for a very long time. We hope the museum will get restored properly in the near future.

Learn the right history and not whatever they feed you at home .

so you cry about the breakfast that is expensive , but you did not spent a peny on food before dinner.
The name of Romania did not exist until 100 years. Here was Hungary.
@@kostas0352 Yes, but not under the name of Romania.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 right.
Because Transsylvania use to be Hungarian for 1000 years!
