    Almost none of the vehicles shown here had pop windshields. The ones show are generally known as safari windows. That could open some for extra ventilation in hot climates, not safety. VW had them several versions of their vehicles. In most cases pop out windshield looked no different than a regular one.

      The term pop-out implies the window is removable. The ones shown are tilt-out / Safari style. The VW bug was never offered with one. That's an aftermarket job.

      @@travisgravelle7687 you are correct on the factory option, although I don't recall the exact years that was available, other than 67 and older. 68 went to a one piece glass.

    The 1963 Studebaker Avanti did not have a collapsible steering column but mounted the worm gear reduction on the frame just before the firewall. The remainder was lighter reach arms to the front where motion was converted to right-left motion for turning. The steering wheel was deep dish absorbing. It also comes with aircraft style seat belts and a passenger compartment roll cage. This with hybrid disk, drum brakes had a specified panic stopping distance from 60 Mph of 160 ft. Much better than GM.

    My first vehicle, built in the late 1970s had a metal dash, a non-collapsible steering column, a rigid frame with no crumple zones, and until I supplemented it with a 4 point harness for those in the front a lap only seat belt. I was forced off the road and crashed at over 45mph doing minimal damage to the vehicle and none to the driver. It may not have followed best safety practices, but was hardly a deathtrap.

    You forgot to mention automatic seatbelts of the 1980s and 1990s, mostly installed on Japanese cars. They were not exactly dangerous but were canceled out anyway.

    Not even sure why neck belts were mentioned as they never got into production. Lap belts will at least keep you inside the car. Driving like a maniac? All bets are off there for protection!
