Since the city pays, the police should do whatever the Council says to do. Since the city pays, restrict the take-home cars to be only within the City Limits.
Why are cops even allowed to take home their patrol cars? All that's happening is that the city is paying for the cops personal vehicles to remain in better condition for longer while city vehicles are being driven into the ground. My Dad was a cop and not once did he ever bring his cruiser home FOR ANYTHING. Too many damn departments are also allowing their cops to take second jobs as security guards and allowing them to not only use their city vehicles but also allowing them to wear their official uniforms while working off the clock as a security guard. As far as I'm concerned any cop who is wearing his official uniform while off duty, who then commits a rights violation should not be given qualified immunity. There are many cases where they have asserted qualified immunity while working off the clock and been granted it.
Council can inform the manager that the policy or the manager’s employment ends. Cars shouldn’t leave the city. The argument for take home is that cars scattered around deter crime. But that doesn’t apply outside city limits.
The problem with police is they believe they are special. These vehicle even at 20 miles round trip is a hell of a lot of wear and tear on those cars. The problem is it doesn't even register to the chief of the issue. If that is a morale problem then there needs to be a refocus of what a cops job is.
Did this chief seriously just try to argue that an officer dying of COVID was in the line of duty? I guess in Fort Worth, police corruption starts at the top!
As someone who personally refers to that time as the "Great Cough" or "Coughing-19", it is still an objective fact that it did cause the death of people, and that the Sgt in question would not have died if he had not caught it while serving his community, and that the vast majority of first responders who died during 2020 and 2021 died as a direct or indirect result of contracting the virus, and that they were at a much higher risk of exposure to it than any other profession outside of a hospital setting (while being without hospital safety measures and equipment) Your logic puts you in the same boat as the ACTUALLY corrupt A-holes who are STILL fighting petty fights against NYFD and other first responders who developed health issues and those who even died as a result of what they were exposed to in and around "Ground Zero" during 9/11 and its clean up process post-9/11, trying to keep them and their families from claiming some or even all of the benefits entitled to them from line of duty injury/death. And if you want to die on the idiotic hill of "line of duty injury is just stull like getting shot or something, not getting sick" then youre also picking a fight with thousands of disabled veterans still fighting the corrupt VA system and the whole DOD to acknowledge that their illnesses and conditions and other health issues are directly a result of their service as a service related injury. It is not corruption to acknowledge reality and acknowledge an Officer died as a result of his service. Remove your head from your rear end long enough to have some basic human decency and respect. Leave this sort of comment on a (hypothetical) video about actual police corruption, not here.
The chief should be suspended for a couple days for his reply to a council member. If I was there, I would move to fire the manager with the expectation that the next would suspend the chief.
If you are trying to talk down about the education and training process of police, but either dont acknowledge or dont even know about the second portion of police training known as the "Field Training Program" or the wide array of different professions within the field of Law Enforcement, then you are your own problem. Policing is a hands-on job that is heavy not just on book knowledge but also on individual and unique human interaction. It is also a much wider field of professions than most people off-hand acknowledge, with roles such as the traditional "city cop" or "county deputy" but also involving careers such as state "Game Warden" or "Fish and Wildlife Officer", "Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Officer", "Livestock Agent", "Crime Scene Investigator", or other highly specialized roles that are vastly different from one another and require much different training. Police Academy is phase one of the formal education and training process for an American police officer, giving the person the needed foundation that most (if not all) of the general and specialized Law Enforcement or Peace Officers will need to build upon. After graduation from the Academy, it grants the person the credentials to apply for an agency's "Field Training Program" where they will be assigned to a Field Training Officer who will then spend between 6 months to well over a year (depending on the agency and the particular type of policing it focuses on) building upon the Academy foundation. During the FTO process, if at any time the FTO believes that the trainee is not fit either for the agency or especially for policing in general, then they have the responsibility and authority to inform their superiors of this and to boot the trainee from the program. This includes everything, up to the last day of the trainees time as a trainee when the FTO must submit their final review of the trainee and decide if the trainee is pass or fail. Finally, in addition to all of this, all Law Enforcement are required to take several forms of "continual education" throughout their career. Most common is the yearly or semi-yearly training course where Officers are informed of any relevant changes to law or policy, as well as continual education and re-qualification for firearms and other police equipment, as well as sponsored courses on various varieties of investigatory tactics for the wide array of different situations an Officer may face or the education and training on how to perform a Field Sobriety Test and what exactly those tests are testing (as well as the scientific basis underlying the validity of the test methodology) among many other subjects. All of this, and more, is why police credentials are also divided into different grades just as other formal education and training systems are, starting at "Basic" and working all the way up to earning a "Masters" level...which btw to earn the Master Peace Officer certification, it takes a minimum of a decade and thats IF the Officer spends basically all of that time taking every single course and studying. For most, the average time to earn the Masters takes between 15-20 years. And as a fun fact for you, the average American Police Officer of the 2010's and 2020's holds at least 1 college degree. And as another fun fact, the first year of a college education is a scam. Anyone who has been through college anytime this century knows full well nothing they were "required" to take their first year was at all relevant to the degree they were trying to pay to learn and earn. Same with barber "college", every single barber will tell you the whole thing is just a generational scam, and at this point you can get just as good of an actual education on cutting hair by watching RUclips videos on the subject and practicing on your friends and family for just a couple months.
